Brig. Gen. Fares ousted for false report over crash, but may fight dismissal in court
Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi yesterday decided to dismiss Brig. Gen. Imad Fares from the army. But Fares, in a highly unusual move, is considering petitioning the High Court of Justice against the decision. Fares, who commanded the 91st Division, was convicted of submitting a false report on a car accident involving his military vehicle last August. He told his commanding officer, GOC Northern Command Gadi Eizenkot, that he drove the vehicle, but in fact his wife, Suheila, was behind the wheel, in violation of regulations. When he first confessed to the falsehood, Fares announced that he would resign from the IDF, but later changed his mind. Ashkenazi said at the time the decision to resign was the right one.
