Brazil under fire for spending $350 million on Israeli drones

Brazil ruling party politician, social activists vow to fight 'importation of Israeli oppression'.

By Cnaan Liphshiz Tags: Israel news

The anticipated use of Israeli-made drones by Brazilian police Tuesday drew criticism from a prominent ruling party politician. It also prompted social activists to seek greater cooperation with Palestinian movements to protest the "importation of Israeli oppression."

The sale of Israeli drones to Brazil "confirms that Israel draws indirect benefits from the illegal occupation of Palestinian territories," Valter Pomar, secretary of international relations for the leftist Workers Party (PT), told Haaretz.

Pomar said he disagreed with the "democratically-reached" decision to equip Brazilian police with drones used as part of what he termed "Israel's illegal and illegitimate actions."

"It is symptomatic that Brazil imports tactics and equipment from Israel, an ultra-militarized country which keeps an entire population under military occupation," said Mauricio Campos, a spokesman for the Network of Communities and Movements against Violence.

He added that the network - a prominent grassroots organization which sprang up six years ago in Rio's poor favelas, or shantytowns - will discuss the pending sale on Thursday, during a general meeting. "Without doubt, we will make our voices heard over this," Campos told Haaretz.

His group has organized various events to protest Israel's policies and what the network called "genocidal attacks" on Palestinians.

The discussion on Thursday of the drone sale was scheduled after Brazilian media reported last week that Rio's state police force is considering buying six Israeli Skylark I unmanned aerial vehicles to combat rampant crime.

In November, during President Shimon Peres' state visit to Brazil, Israel and Brazil sealed a $350 million deal for the supply of 14 Israeli Heron UAVs to several Brazilian law enforcement agencies.

That deal was completed weeks after a drug gang from a Rio favela shot down a police helicopter with a short range rocket.

How easy is to manupulate public opinion... I'm a Brazilian and, believe me, NOBODY knows this Pomar guy here. And this so called "prominent" NGO is also totally irrelevant. It seems the only one who pays attention to them is this paper's correspondent - and, of course, you talkbackers who can't think twice before spilling hate against a friendly nation like Brazil. Get a life you all!

Yet again democratic decisions are only acceptable if they agree with the leftist worldview. They love freedom of speech as long as its leftist dialectic.

How much is the 'average IQ' in the favelas and shantytowns? The main worry over there is NOT how to get more food, better housing and education, crime, drugs....., NO it's the 'Israeli drownes and the 'plight of the poor Pals with their 7% GDP (2009). Ask them to show you where Israel is on the map. Rest my case.

The Brazilian government want the right product for the right price and Israel had what they want. When it comes to security matters the individuals might not like it but militaries choose what they feel is best for the job & budget and politics is not considered an issue If people don't want to buy Jaffa oranges or humus they are welcome but they should not expect their military to boycott Israeli weapons because security isn't politics. Turkey against the will of many of the people didn't cancel any contracts with Israel for UAVS The British army is using Israeli UAVS as part of their future combat system. Germany, Spain, India, Turkey, Canada, Russia and many other countries who show sympathy for the palestinians buy Israeli UAVS & other military products. The military & security services are not political institutions they are there to protect their country and if they feel its Israeli weapons then they will buy them even if they are sympathetic to the cause of Israels enemies

these organizations have much contact with arab propaganda through the ruling party ( Workers Party ) and other extreme left political parties, who are well known for their anti semitism and anti Israel concepts. The drug gangs, who dominate the shanttowns of Rio d Janeiro and other brazilian big cities, do not want to see the police woring with modern machinery against their business, and have to achieve it, politicians paid and mainained by them. These are the people who are claiming to oppose the purchasing of israeli made dornes

These Brazilians are foaming at the mouth, like dogs with rabies. Its as if Israel would have a cure for cancer (entirely possible) and they would say, I'd rather die. I have been to Sao Paulo, miles of homeless living under a highway in cardboard boxes, for as far as the eye can see. Now, THERE is an oppressed people, right under their noses. Instead, they buy into the Palestinian "Oppression and Occupation". In the US, we call it Fugazy, fake.

Obviously, its from these Favelas or shantytowns where drugs, crime bosses and murder are order of the day. The representatives of said shanty towns have made their opinion public as quoted: He added that the network - a prominent grassroots organization which sprang up six years ago in Rio's poor favelas, or shantytowns - will discuss the pending sale on Thursday, during a general meeting. "Without doubt, we will make our voices heard over this," Campos told Haaretz...Unquote. Israeli drones are now sold world wide to law enforcement agencies. For they are relatively cheap, easy to maintain, can stay aloft for many hours and are efficient and impossible to hack into, unlike others as seen in Iraq and Afghanistan. Good day.

You would think that a country like Brazil would want to buy the best drones possible and that is obviously the ones made by Israel. How they can be caught up in this obscene dance of arab propaganda and witch hunt leaves me baffled.
