Barak heads to U.S. to discuss Iran, Mideast peace talks

Defense minister decides to embark on trip despite rising security tensions, especially on northern border.

By Amos Harel and Agencies Tags: Ehud Barak Iran nuclear Israel news

Defense Minister Ehud Barak leaves for the United States Tuesday to discuss Iran's nuclear program and the possible reviving of talks with the Palestinians. Barak decided to make the trip despite rising security tensions, especially on the northern border.

Barak is to speak with U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates and senior Pentagon officials, followed by a meeting in New York with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Along with efforts to renew talks with the Palestinians and discussions with the United Nations over the Goldstone report, Barak will devote much of his visit to the Iranian threat and its implications for Israel's relations with its closest neighbors.

Sources say Jerusalem expects the Obama administration to lead the way next month toward harsh international sanctions on Iran to stop its nuclear program.

Israel is worried that its northern border could flare up if tensions with Tehran rise; the Islamic Republic has close links with Syria and Lebanon's Hezbollah. A few weeks ago, Gates warned in a lecture in the United States that Tehran could spark a conflict between Hezbollah and Israel if sanctions are placed on its nuclear program.

Last week Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad warned in a speech that Israel wants to attack Syria or Hezbollah this spring or summer. He also said Iran would stand by Syria and Lebanon if they were attacked.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Ahmadinejad's accusations were groundless. Israel has recently conveyed messages to Syria to clarify that it has no intention to attack it. Netanyahu Monday called for an immediate embargo on Iran's energy sector, saying the UN Security Council should be sidestepped if it cannot agree on the move.

Iran's uranium enrichment, in defiance of several rounds of Security Council sanctions, has spurred world powers to consider tougher diplomatic measures, against the backdrop of threatened military action by Israel as a last resort.

Netanyahu told foreign Jewish leaders that if the world "is serious about stopping Iran, then what it needs to do is not watered-down sanctions, moderate sanctions ... but effective, biting sanctions that curtail the import and export of oil into Iran.

"This is what is required now. It may not do the job, but nothing else will, and at least we will have known that it was tried. And if this cannot pass in the Security Council, then it should be done outside the Security Council, but immediately."

Many Western diplomats believe that China, along with fellow veto-wielder Russia, would oppose sanctions targeting Iran's energy sector. Proposed sanctions for now focus on Iranian government assets like the Revolutionary Guards.

Iran, the world's fifth-largest oil exporter, says its uranium enrichment is for peaceful energy needs. Netanyahu made no reference in his speech to the possibility that Israel would try to attack Iran's nuclear sites.

Also Monday, a nuclear energy official said Iran has earmarked potential sites for new nuclear enrichment plants, and construction of two of them could begin this year.

"We have earmarked close to 20 sites and have passed the report on those to the president; however, these sites are only potential," Ali Akbar Salehi, head of the Atomic Energy Organization, was quoted as saying by news agency ISNA.

    Next War: Israel and Syria
    • Under His Shadow

The bible predicted exactly what will happen over 2,000 years ago, and the now the cards are falling into place exactly as the prophets of old have spoken. The next event will be between Israel and Syria. The bible tells us that Damascus will be a "runious heap" and will disappear. This is what God revealed to the prophet Isaiah: ?This message came to me concerning Damascus: ?Look, Damascus will disappear! It will become a heap of ruins. The cities of Aroer will be deserted. Sheep will graze in the streets and lie down unafraid. There will be no one to chase them away. The fortified cities of Israel will also be destroyed, and the power of Damascus will end, says the Lord Almighty.? Isaiah 17:1-3 Second Event: While Syria and Israel lie in ruin, the enemies of Israel will view her suffering as an opportunity to invade and the war will expand. But the Lord said to Israel, "Fear not, for I am with you. Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. IS:41

century. His weakness, inexperience and indecision will not avoid war but will only serve to hasten it! He even makes Carter look like a good President in comparison ! Soon the U.S. debt , federal corruption, a flagrant government mismanagement will make the country into a second-rate power that can no even govern or provide for their own! This bloated federal government is going to collapse under its own weight as did the USSR. Obama is the instrument of America's fall from power. His 'change' will be a curse to America !

The situation on the northern border might be passed along by phone. A meeting isn't necessary. But if Israel wants to pay for a vacation for him, OK. The other issues are POLICY and would require meetings with State or the political aides to Obama that Israel doesn't like. None of them are mentioned. Maybe that's because if Barak talked to them openly it would hurt Likud and Lieberman's image.

This latest from Bibi on sanctions is a classic: "if this cannot pass in the Security Council, then it should be done outside the Security Council, but immediately." Who DOES this guy think he is??? His country's actions have racked up more UN resolutions against it than any other, yet still he has the chutzpah to demand that the UN bypass China, Russia, the USA and EU to pursue an Israeli benefit gig? Not even Micronesia will buy that one! Bibi pretends to believe he's an important player on the international stage and Israel's words count. The reality is it's a very small country with next to no international influence - even less since the clown act of Lieberman and Ayalon took to the stage - and nobody outside Israel actually cares what he does or doesn't think on global issues. Progress on vacating Palestine or responding to Goldstone, that's a different matter, all are waiting to see some CONCRETE developments rather than the usual Israeli wuffle.

Every Israeli PM seems to need a war to their credit, just to show how tough they are (and take attention away from the WB and negotiations). Barak is heading for his third one and poor Bibi needs his chance to star. He and his team are doing everything they can to drive the West into starting a war for them or providing the cover (and military muscle) to let Israel star in the spotlight. One can never be clear whether he means anything he says, or whether it's just posing for the domestic Zio audience. But he needs to be told by the rest of the world that it's NOT going to go to war simply to preserve Israel's nuclear hegemony in the M-E or its status as the local bully-boy on the block. I do wish he would shut up and let the UN get on with it, Israel is adding nothing to resolving the position with Iran and merely inflames things to get headlines in the Israeli press.

Oil is already at US$80/bbl and will just go up the more Israel tries to find someone to attack Iran. Pretty soon the US recover will stop and head for the floor again. There have now been three different simulations of an attack on Iran described in the press and all three showed the US and Israel losing and none of the simulations factored in how China would react (with extreme anger at the US and Israel). It is time for Israel to just shut up and learn to live with Iran is it actually does get a nuclear bomb.

The Obama machinery is now at work to distract Israel from doing what is necessary in defending itself. Israel should not fall for this trap. Israel's officials should not be traveling to nowhere just to be distracted from focusing their eyes on the Ayatollahs' nuke threat. Israel should keep away from the world of AntiSemites and Islamist-Jihadists as it defends itself against those who have threatened to obliterate her repeatedly.

Just exactly what Israel leaders have been saying since at least 1936 to the present asc evidenced in the Likud Charter. " In a letter Chaim Weizmann sent to the Palestine-British high Commissioner, while the Peel Commission was convening in 1937, he stated: "We shall spread in the whole country in the course of time ..... this is only an arrangement for the next 25 to 30 years." (Expulsion Of The Palestinians, p. 66) * Ben-Gurion emphasized that the acceptance of the Peel Commission would not imply static borders for the future "Jewish state". In a letter Ben-Gurion sent to his son in 1937, he wrote: "No Zionist can forgo the smallest portion of the Land Of Israel. [A] Jewish state in part [of Palestine] is not an end, but a beginning ..... Our possession is important not only for itself ... through this we increase our power, and every increase in power facilitates getting hold of the country in its entirety. Establishing a [small] state .... will serve as a very potent lever in our historical effort to redeem the whole country." (Righteous Victims, p. 138) * In 1938, Ben-Gurion made it clear of his support for the "Jewish state" on part of Palestine was only as a stepping ground for a complete conquest. He wrote: "[I am] satisfied with part of the country, but on the basis of the assumption that after we build up a strong force following the establishment of the state--we will abolish the partition of the country and we will expand to the whole Land of Israel." (Expulsion Of The Palestinians, p. 107 & One Palestine Complete, p. 403) *

Neither Gates nor Ban has any policy role in anything the press release covered. I wonder what the real reason for the trip will be and who he will really meet with. State handles POLICY on both Iran and the Palestinian negotiations. Gates has no role on policy for either.. The US Department of Defense is not an independent political domain like in Israel. It does the bidding of the President.

...and Israel will be tosssed overboard by the American public. Is that what you all want as that's where your nonstop war mongering leaders are taking you? And I should add at this point how shockingly irresponsible for Peres to refer to the Iranian leader as an executioner. That's fear mongering taken to its highest Jewish form and shame on him. The Iranian leadership maybe be rigid in its ideology but it seems to me no more so than orthodox jews or born again Christians. Indeed, Iranian jews have refused to come to Israel and so have some American and English and French Jews. This says more in my mind about the absolutely wrong direction the Israeli leadership is head-ing into today...Dutch

"Sources say Jerusalem expects the Obama administration to lead the way next month toward harsh international sanctions on Iran to stop its nuclear program." Amos Harel Jerusalem? Not Tel Aviv? Hmmn, have you already stolen E. Jerusalem? Harsh international sanctions on Iran's legal nuclear program won't happen. If Iran is forced to make a bomb by an Israeli attack on it's soil, it will be justified. As for Ehud, be glad that the U.S. doesn't arrest you for war crimes. You and Livni better stay out of the U.K. Peace talks with the Palestinians? Quit playing with yourselves. You jerks haven't defined the borders, the status of Jerusalem(?), the refugees.... This stall job since '67 has always been a ruse to delay things while stealing Palestinian land. In the word of Menachem Begin, "negotiate, negotiate, negotiate, even to the year 2000." That was said over thirty years ago. I guess non-Jews are gullible enough to believe in Jewish integrity. Salaam/Shalom
