Assad: We will stand by Lebanon if attacked by Israel
Netanyahu: Israel seeks peace with all neighbors; Saudi paper says Hezbollah has raised alert in Lebanon.
By Avi Issacharoff Tags: Israel news Middle East peaceSyrian President Bashar Assad on Sunday vowed to stand by Lebanon's side against any Israeli "aggression," in an escalating war of words between Damascus and Jerusalem.
Assad made the remark to the speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Beri, in Damascus, according to the official Syrian news agency, Sana.
Assad's statement followed that of Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Mualem, who last Wednesday warned that all-out war would result if Israel "starts a war in Southern Lebanon or Syria."
Earlier Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sought to calm the war of words, telling his cabinet that Israel aspired to peace with all its neighbors, and that he was open to fresh talks with Syria.
At the start of the weekly cabinet meeting, Netanyahu told the ministers that Israel had made peace "with Egypt and Jordan and we aspire to do so with Syria and the Palestinians. We can achieve this with two conditions: The first is that we hold negotiations without preconditions. We will not accept the notion that Israel makes major concessions in advance. We will not enter negotiations for which everything is decided in advance."
Until last Wednesday, Syria had been careful not to specifically connect the conflict in Lebanon to fighting Israel.
And while Assad stopped short of saying that Syria would attack Israel in case of war with Hezbollah, his statement, released in Syria's official media outlet, creates expectations in the Arab world, particularly in Lebanon and Syria, that Syria would actively join the fight rather than just send arms to Hezbollah.
However, Prof. Eyal Zisser, head of the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies, said there was nothing new in Assad's recent statements.
"Experience of the past 40 years shows that Syria is willing to have the Palestinians and the Lebanese to fight Israel to their last drop of blood, as long as the Syrians don't have to be involved," he said.
Same old rhetoric
Zisser said Syria has always intended to help to some degree, but not to fight. "When you compare the rhetoric of past statements, there is practically no difference," he said.
Meanwhile, Syrian Minister of Information Mohsen Bilal said Sunday that Syria is ready to respond to Israeli "aggression." Speaking at a seminar near the border with the Golan Heights, Bilal said his country "would stand in the face of Israeli ambitions," and that the Golan Heights "will not remain under occupation."
According to Bilal, Syria is "working tirelessly toward true and lasting just peace, in which the occupation ends and the land is returned," dismissing Israel's 1981 annexation of the Golan Heights as "worthless."
Meanwhile, the leader of Lebanon's Maronite Christians, Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir, said recently that the possibility of war exists as long as Hezbollah continues to try to take on the role of the state. "The party that has the weapons tries to force itself on the others," he said in a newspaper interview.

Syria doesn't want a fight with Israel. For one thing, they know it will be the last time that they were a nation and Assad, like all of the impotent fools in the region are trying to save face by issuing semi-threats toward Israel but know that they can't back them up. Iran can't help Syria or Lebanon when Israel gets busy for real and I believe if Hizbullah or some other punk group tries to use Syria or Lebanon to launch missiles or other attacks, Israel will deal much more harshly than the last go around with Lebanon. I know that a lot of people said that Hizbullah gave Israel a run for their money, but believe me, if Israel brings out it's "aA" game against these nations it's over and no one will dispute the results. So, you may want to take pause Syria, Lebanon and hope that Iran hasn't already pushed you beyond the brink or it's lights out for you and yours. Good Night.
Welcome Ya People to the Christian State of South Lebanon where Israelis come to enjoy the beer and the girls. Welcome ya People of Israel to the land left by the terrorist Hezbollah. Welcome to Ya Ju to tha land that will see ya end.
Following the hard words by Nasrallah, Israel has gone to the UN security council to file a complaint of harassment by the Lebanese militia. Opinions in Israeli Political apparatus have shifted toward asking the UN for an embargo against Hezbollah and asking Nato and the US for protection of Israeli cities. Population in Israel have found difficulties sleeping after Nasrallah's speech on bombing Tel Aviv. Some residents of Tel Aviv have already considered moving further south to the Sinai desert or joining Hosni Moubarak in Sharm El Sheik. King Abdallah of Jordan has also offered security to the Israelis fleeing their cities after the treats from the Lebanese terrorist group. Camps are already being set up on Jordanian and Egyptian borders to accept Israeli refugees.
If you have such a jaundiced view of the U S, perhaps your being here is not the best idea. The proper action for a zionist as committed as you would be to make aliyah and take part in the growth and development of the Israel you love so much.
The US has tied Israel's hands. But Israel doesn't need the US. We need Israel because it is through our treatment of God's chosen that blessings flow. Israel has God, the creator of the universe, the provider of all that we have. God says in Isaiah 17 "Behold, Damascus will cease from being a city, and it will be a ruinous heap. Yes, Israel will be damaged, but the whole world is going to be judged for its treatment of Israel. You can have your bombs. I'll take my God, Israel's God any day. He made your bombs possible since He created all things. The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. Humble yourself while there is still time. Take off the blindfolds and turn to your creator.
The idea that Assad would join in if Israel went to war with Lebanon is just rediculous. The Syrian tanks from the 60s & 70s, their ships that took part in the 1967 & 1973 wars, its Soviet era MIGS with the worst pilots in the region and of course they would have to fight uphill because Israel has the Golan high ground. Any war with Lebanon would have been started by Syria via Hizbollah. Next time there is a flare up with Hizbollah Israel should attack Syria rather than be dragged into a conflict on Hizbollahs home ground & force Lebanon to pay the price for Assads war. Attack Syria the war will be quick & easy and Assad will get the message Lebanon will no longer be allowed to be used as a battlefield for his wars. This speech was for the ears of Obama & Israels left trying to scare them into accepting they must push the Israeli government into doing a deal now on Assads terms. We have heard all this sort of thing from Assad before and so no need to take him seriously now.
Yonatan and Bernie Ross seem intent on an Israeli war of aggression against Lebanon. Why? Aside from the Litani's water, what else do you want from Lebanon? And how do you plan to govern Syria after destroying Damascus? What is your plan of occupation? Or do you plan to turn it over to al Qaida as a subcontractor?
Then let the game begin.
In the next war, Assad Junior will probably need to see an eye doctor if he's lucky.
Isaiah 17:1 The burden concerning Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.
the population south of the litani river is only 15-20% and the basin of hezbollah support among the people is there. so i dont know how you can expect to create a christian majority there.
They will be toast. What are they talking about? How about improving the lives of their citizens? How about incrasing their GDP per capita from $100 per year?
Is the US supposed to give Arizona to Mexico because they would really, really like to have it back?
Israel established such a buffer zone and had Christians allies run it with many Shiite as fighters for the south Lebanese militia many had no choice but to. here is the kicker though, all these christian Lebanese that allied themselves with Israel against Lebanon are now living in Israeli valleys using tents as their new founded home ,many came back to Lebanon and surrendered themselves, served jail time over the humiliation received by their so called ally... fool me once shame on u fool me twice shame on me, Christians in Lebanon wont fall for this trap, not today and definitely not tomorrow, look for plan c as in C ur way out of Lebanese affairs before the hunter becomes the hunted and also cause plans a and b are dead..sorry.
to be interested in peace for over 15 years. The fact is: Nethanyahu and his right-wing gang did everything to create a hate for Israel, caused a rapid rise in anti-semitic attacks around the world and took Lieberman to everyone: we Israelis, are not interested in peace and are looking for new wars. The fact is: Israel has a democratic elected government and so the majority of Israelis backs Nethanyahu. The fact is: the IDF was not able to beat Hezbollah but did bomb civilian targets. The fact is: in the next war Hezbollah AND Syria will fight the IDF. The fact is: Israel has NO defense against some 80,000 missiles that both Hezbollah and Syria can fire at Israeli civil targets. The fact is: Israelis don't seem to worry and give carte blanche to Nethanyahu to start more wars. Israel can have its wars.
Funny that you had to put "non-Jews" in your statement. Ah, you new anti-semites have a lot to learn about tact. :)
is just defending, against attacks. is that also called Israeli "aggression?
WE KNOW THAT SFEIR IS A MANYAK LIKE ABBAS THE TRAITOR
Syria does not have the military might to confront Israel, they are trying to imnpres the world as if they are an important factor in the political game there. As to say that yhe anexation in 1981 of the Golan is worthless is an under statement, so far thirty years have gone by and Syria has not confront Israel to regain the Golan, thete has to be a reason.
Bernie, your hidden, inner-Picot or Sykes is showing. You also confirm the fears of the Lebanese that Israel plans a war of aggression. And you wonder why anybody in Lebanon would fear an Israeli invasion or obtain some missiles by way of deterrence. If you plan a war of aggression, you are likely to find people upset over the prospect of being invaded.
No Iraqi Tank will be supporting Syrian in the next war against Israel. Syria have killed enough Iraqis for the last several year in favor of Iranian Regime. Syria has massacared Iraqi people not the government indiscremently Siia, Sunni, Kurds, Yazidi, christian and Turkish in order to start a civil war. Syria has fogotten the lesson from early 1970's war, nearly loosing the Capital to the advancing Israeli Tanks.
The crisis in Iran is behind all the latest attacks on Israel including the floating bombs from Gaza, threats of war and war crimes from Syria and the assassination attempt on the Israeli diplomats in Jordan. The Supreme Mullah is facing not only the democratic protests of the Iranian people but also the international community's growing recognition that an Iranian Bomb is too dangerous to be allowed. Like a drowning murderer clutching at a drinking straw still in his victims' blood he is determined to go down fighting Israel to the last Arab. Free Iran, Democracy Now!!! The People United will never be defeated!
Somebody should slap this traitor in the mouth.
I guess Israel and Lebanon should get ready to a bad summer full of death and destruction, while Iran is laughing and Syria is watching.
Why did anyone even start this fight? This is unnecessary.
so long as it ends in a land where Palestinian non-Jews have reasonable freedoms, liberties and opportunities, the rest of the world will support it. It is a sad day that many people may be forced to support Syria over Israel if the harsh words hit ground.
...Israel should take the opportunity it missed before during the lebanese civil war, that is to create a free lebanese christian state in southern lebanon to the litani river.
1 of 2 things must have happened. The rampant unemployment and inflation must have led the Alawites to fear the overthrow of their government so they want to pick a fight with Israel, or Syria is such a puppet of Iran, the land of aryans, that it was told by Iran to attack Israel to keep the world away from their Nukes. Either way, there is no reason to talk to Syria now.
