After 8 years, Israel reopens Hebron road
By Chaim LevinsonIsrael yesterday opened a road from Hebron to the Jewish settlement of Kiryat Arba to Palestinian traffic for the first time in eight years. The road was closed to Palestinian traffic in 2001, after the outbreak of the second intifada and a spate of terror attacks.
In 2008, the Hebron municipality petitioned the High Court to open the road. Hebron governor Hussein al-Araj said the opening of the road was an attempt by Israel to distract from its continued settlement activities. He called on Palestinians not to use the road.
The Yesha Council of settlements also criticized the measure, saying it ignored "bloodied experiments from the past" and placed the comfort of some Arab families over the peace and security of thousands.
