2,186,900 children live in Israel
Around a third of Israel's population is under the age of 18 - a total of 2,186,900 children. Some 1,363,863 are enrolled as students at schools.
A total of 116,682 children's parents are divorced. Despite the increasing number of divorces in Israel, there is no legislation compelling parents to take the children's wishes into account during the divorce proceedings.
Furthermore, 8,977 children are under the Welfare Ministry's auspices, residing outside of their parents' home in boarding schools or foster families. However, there is currently no law protecting the rights of these children nor the state's responsibility toward them. (A.G.)
