MK Ahmed Tibi: Israeli Arab leaders who visited Libya didn't back Gadhafi
Tibi was among initiators of delegation of Higher Arab Monitoring Committee to Libya in 2010, which is now drawing criticism due to Libya's violent crackdown on anti-government protesters.
By Jack KhouryMK Ahmed Tibi of the United Arab List-Ta'al was among the initiators of the delegation of the Higher Arab Monitoring Committee to Libya last April. The recent unrest in Libya has reignited criticism of the Arab Knesset members who participated in the visit, and of the underlying objectives of the visit. Tibi speaks out here against the critics, stresses that Jewish MKs also wanted to go along to Libya at the time, and insists the trip should be judged today by the intentions and aims back then - not by what has happened a year later, or in terms of current attitudes toward what he calls the "tahrirization" going on in the Arab world.
MK Ahmed Tibi, in light of the events in Libya and the visit you paid there about a year ago, do you owe people an apology?

"The visit by the Higher Arab Monitoring Committee in which I participated was at the invitation and initiative of the Libyan ambassador in Jordan, Dr. Mohammed Merghani [on behalf of Col. Muammar Gadhafi] ... The visit has to be judged by the intention, which was to bring up the issue of the Arab minority [in Israel] and its needs."
So it is correct to accept an invitation from anyone, without exercising judgment?
"First of all, he invited us and secondly, no one imagined he would do what he is doing a year later. Anyone who says he could have foreseen these events is not speaking the truth and is being deceptive."
Everyone today seems to be in favor of the people and against the regime in Libya, but isn't it true that even before the visit, Gadhafi was not a democrat or a believer in human rights?
"I admit the connection with the Arab world is one that involves non-democratic regimes. There's a difference between visiting and being loyal to or trailing after one regime or another. I am saying clearly and unambiguously that a visit does not constitute an expression of support for Gadhafi's policy in Libya - and such things were said there. For example, I personally expressed criticism of the backwardness in the world as a result of certain regimes, and the fact that rights are not granted to citizens. And we said that the role of the revolutions that erupted and overcame colonialism in the Arab world has been to give freedom and liberty and democracy to the Arab world."
But weren't there also extravagant words of praise and a blurring of the political platform of the Arabs of Israel?
"I spoke about a two-state solution and so did my colleague (Hadash MK ) Mohammed Barakeh, and we spoke about the exclusion of 20 percent of the population of the state and the manifestations of racism. We have said and we are still saying these things from the Knesset podium. Sheik Ra'ad Salah spoke about the holy places and the Al-Aqsa Mosque."
You also asked for money. As citizens of the State of Israel, does this seem legitimate to you?
"It is permissible and in my opinion necessary to ask for financial aid from the Arab world, in light of the exclusion and discrimination against Arab citizens on the part of the State of Israel. Let me remind you that Doha Stadium in Sakhnin would not have been built without the generous aid of the Qatari emir, totaling $6 million. In addition, hundreds of Arab students are receiving scholarships from the government of Jordan to study there in universities and Arab artists, actors and singers seek a connection with the Arab word. This is very important and also stands to reason."
If you receive an invitation from another Arab leader, will you accept it now?
"There is no doubt our calculations will be more cautious and profound. We will take various scenarios into account and we will be self-critical, but it is important to stress that we do not regret our visits in the Arab world. We visited Tunis and Egypt and no one said a word. We do not support the regimes and I don't think there is anyone in the Arab parties today who goes along with one regime or another, or anyone living at the expense of one regime or another. There is no need to judge us for a visit that took place a year ago in light of the pictures that are being published now. We should be judged by our position after they started shooting people in the streets and by how we reacted."
Did you do any soul-searching after the visit?
"I do soul-searching vis-a-vis our public, and not vis-a-vis those rightist and Israeli elements who opposed the visit. Israeli leaders are goveling on all fours to meet Arab leaders. I am telling you there were Israeli [sic] Knesset members who wanted to join the visit to Libya. Ta'al has never been a satellite or a dependent of any totalitarian regime and therefore the visits and the connection with the Arab world will proceed with a more critical and cautious view."
Can you give me a name of a [Jewish] MK who wanted to go?
"If they have the courage they will speak up. I am telling you with certainty that all the MKs of Libyan origin asked [to go], and there were also others."
Will your statements now and those of your colleagues against the regimes and in favor of freedom prevent you from visiting Arab countries in the future?
"That may be the case. We will be judged by our unambiguous statements and our support for the masses. Once again, I say we are in favor of democratization in the Arab world - from the North African countries to the Arab Gulf. At Tahrir Square in Cairo there was something wonderful, the revolution of a young generation, the Facebook generation that overcame the obsolete political parties, and touched freedom and liberty. I hope that what occurred at Tahrir Square - 'tahrirization' - will also occur in many squares in the Arab world."
In the territories of the Palestinian Authority as well?
"In the PA there is a popular movement today that is demanding the end of the split [in the Palestinian people] and I hope this movement will indeed prevail. Masses have also gone to the roadblocks to express a clear position in peaceful ways against the most repressive regime in the Middle East: the occupation."
And to express opposition to the PA in Ramallah and to the Hamas regime in Gaza?
"For that reason elections are needed and the ballot box is the best means. Why are there no revolutions in Israel even though there are circumstances and reasons? Because its possible to hang a leader in the ballot box and not in the city square."
Are you praising Israeli democracy?
"In Israel there is ethnic democracy: democracy for 80 percent of the public and exclusion and discrimination for 20 percent, and a regime of oppression and dictatorship in the occupied territories. I and my colleagues, my fellow Arab Knesset members, are sitting just a few meters away in the plenum hall from Israelis who have killed members of our people and are imposing a regime of occupation. Will anyone say this testifies to support for their deeds? This is a compromise of ours because we must make our voice heard. We must speak out on every platform and in every arena. I think Israelis shouldn't boast of their democracy as compared to Libya, but rather as compared to Sweden, Norway and France. I want the inhabitants of Taibeh to receive the same treatment as the adjacent Kokhav Yair and not be living as in a Third World country."

I love Palestinian people, I prey they will have a state of their own, as they deserve. However, just a note to all the Palestinian people, their MKs and the PA ministers, you should be all ashamed of supporting monsters like Saddam Hussein and Gaddafi. I would like you to concentrate on fighting oppression and not supporting monsters in other countries. Please don't deny this because you know very well this is what you have done in the past. I will keep supporting you but you need to stay on the straight and narrow.
What you're saying is a lie.
This speech alone is the one we need to read. That alone will show how hypocritical Mr Tibi is being now.
And as JFK pointed out in his time our problems are manmade and must be solved by men also.. So kudos to the Arab MKs for keeping the line of communication opened ....It was a noble thing to do! !!! Dutch
Hopefully their constituents will see this for what it is.

We are repressive- overly so.. I may not be concilation..but i imagine that most Palestinians under occupation would prefer.. well, maybe not..
"Laws and Customs of War on Land" (Hague IV); October 18, 1907: "Section III Military Authority over the territory of the hostile State."[1] The first two articles of that section state: Art. 42. Territory is considered occupied when it is actually placed under the authority of the hostile army. The occupation extends only to the territory where such authority has been established and can be exercised. Art. 43. The authority of the legitimate power having in fact passed into the hands of the occupant, the latter shall take all the measures in his power to restore, and ensure, as far as possible, public order and safety, while respecting, unless absolutely prevented, the laws in force in the country. Soo what occupation?
Does he think that anybody believes him for a moment? Everybody knew that Gaddafi was a monster, just think of this story of Bulgarian nurses, jailed and tortured and returned home for a huge ransom.
Gaddafi is an enemy of Israel and used to support the PLO and he is a big supporter of Hamas. Tibi does not believe Israel has a right to exist. He is an MK because he rightly believes its better being in a position of power is better than sitting on the sidelines. He takes part in protests where he personally throws stones at the cars of settlers. He says there was never a jewish temple on Temple Mount. He was once even an advisor to Arafat. How many countries do you know of where members of its parliament consider the country to be illegitimate, supports terrorists who kill its citizens and act as advisors to enemies? The left hate Liberman and his ideas but look at the kind of people who are tolerated on the opposite side of the bench. Tibi makes Liberman look like a moderate.
It sounds then , to be consistent, that the Right Honourable MK Dr Tibi must by rights condemn any one who wants to boycott Israel for any reason Tibi :".I am saying clearly and unambiguously that a visit does not constitute an expression of support for Gadhafi's policy in Libya " Even more so in that Israel (even with all its quirks) is still a liberal l democracy and Libya has always uner Col Gaddafi been a murderous dictatorship. Has Dr Tibi made such a statement against calls to boycott Israel and Isrealis? If so, I have not yet seen it.
Problem is logic counts for so little to Tibi or to other haters of Israel or to the BDS movement. They bash Israel whatever it does and claim to be morally just. The hypocrisy is clear for all to see.
Arabs mistakes and Israel faulr, The day the Arabs admit their faults we wont be far from peacce,
Tibi, you supported dictators. Now please shut up and represent the real interests of your constituents
Tibi should know what the price for Sedition is according to Muslim Law applied at the Medina Massacre of 627 and should thank his G-d for living in the State of Israel. Traitors can walk freely in Israel?
Tibi: "I am saying clearly and unambiguously that a visit does not constitute an expression of support for Gadhafi's policy in Libya." Does a performance in Tel Aviv by has-been Elvis Costello and his ilk constitute support for Israel? Why does Tibi oppose such appearances? Tibi: "I am telling you there were ISRAELI Knesset members who wanted to join the visit to Libya." If this SOB does not consider himself Israeli, why is he an MK. Boot him out now!
Ghadaffi visited main european capitals. Why don't you criticize brits or french welcoming the forgiven lybian leader...and potential client? Belgian, a NATO (under us commandment) weapon industry sold last year up to date weapons to the libyan brigades led by Ghadaffi's sons. You do really believe Tibi's trip is a problem? Because he is an israeli? You surely remember israel being involved in iraniangate?
How many Jewish lawmakers are there in Arab countries, and if not why not? How many democratic truly democratic members exist in Arab world?

It is enough to read carefully the speech that Tibi delivered in front of Qaddhafi, which contained much praise, to learn much about Tibi, who did the same also to Arafat, Abbas, and to many other Arab leaders, just for some personal glory and rewards that he knows very well what they were...
You look for friends and trading partners where you find them... its the job of the government to look after Israel's interests and if that means forging alliances with questionable regimes then you do it. Tibi did not have permission to visit Gaddafi it was an illegal trip which he got away with by claiming Knesset immunity. He was not there to form an alliance or do business on behalf of the state. Not only was he not looking for forge alliances for Israel Gaddafi was an enemy at the time he had chemical warheads on missiles pointed in Israel.s direction and he was supporting the PLO so not exactly doing business with South Africa during the aparetheid years is it?
Unfortunately, Arab-Israelis can't seem to get it together any more than the Arabs in the West Bank and Gaza. Many of them do not vote for Arab parties, but for others they think are more effective. They prefer to break laws, rather than work together to assure that laws are applied equally (for instance building permits), then when they are faced with the consequences, they create public discord, which is all too eagerly reported by worldwide media. And, as always, when MK Tibi speaks, it is hard to know whether his loyalty is to Israel, which has given him the opportunity to participate fully in the democratic process, or with the rest of the Arab world that would destroy Israel. As for the scholarships given to Arab students by Jordan, may I remind him that, during the time the West Bank was under Jordanian rule, students there had to go to Amman or Cairo or Damascus for higher education, because Jordan would not allow institutions of higher learning to be established there. MK Tibi, please come to the table, be a loyal citizen, and honor your country for what you and your fellow Arab-Israelis have received and achieved there.
Ahmed Tibi is a traitor who did not go to Libya. He went to Ghadaffi's Libya whom he considered an ally and a supporter. And indeed Ghadaffi was his ally and supporter. Quislings like Tibi take advantage of Israel's freedom and democracy to stab their own country in the back in typical Arab fashion, and then when caught with their pants down, attempt with their forked Islamic tongues to try to worm their way out of an embarrassing situation.
You were groveling at the guy's feet.
That phrase "be a man" is from the police chief in Dubai when he said to Nethanyahu last year- "be a man " and admit you were responsible for the assasination. So I say "Be a man". Admit it was a mistake to go to Libya.
Arabic for both "treason" and "thief"
the traitor's story changes daily. Just yesterday he admitted the support. Today he is seeing that Israeli Arabs have had enough of his self-engrandisement and are prepared to join all Israelis in calling for his being tried for treason. Soon, we will find out how many tens of millions Qaddafi deposited in his name in numbered Swiss accounts.
