At the height of the lecturers' strike, a crisis has erupted inside the body supervising the universities, the Council for Higher Education. Education Minister Yuli Tamir is also the council chair, and she has threatened to fire the council's director, Steven Stav.
Tamir told TheMarker that the threat isn't related to the strike and won't influence the strike's process, given that the council plays almost no role in it.
Tamir claims the council's role has deteriorated to merely authorizing the study program, and that it barely addresses substantive issues. Major decisions are made by VATAT, the council's planning and budget panel, she claims, not the council itself.
