Lawmaker: Israel iPad ban stems from IDF security fears
Yisrael Beiteinu's Robert Ilatov urgs Communications Minister to lift ban off of Apple's new computers.
By TheMarker Tags: Israel newsThe reason the Communications Ministry is blocking the entry of iPad tablet computers into Israel is that the device's wireless communications could interfere with frequencies used by the military, said MK Robert Ilatov (Yisrael Beiteinu) yesterday. He wrote a letter to Communications Minister Moshe Kahlon, calling on him to allow the importation of Apple's new computers, which the ministry banned last week. Ilatov said the ban had harmed Israel's image around the world, and kept Israelis from using cutting-edge technology.
He said that major international media outlets such as CNN and The Wall Street Journal had reported on the ban, and had ridiculed Israel over it.
The ministry banned importation of the devices last week, saying they did not meet European standards for wireless use of communications frequencies. It said that when the international models meeting European standards went on sale they would be allowed into Israel, as long as the buyers paid any and all required taxes.

Consider the following: http://www.itwire.com/your-it-news/mobility/38381-israels-ipad-wifi-weirdness.
The UN Partition plan was rejected for obvious reasons; the Israelis were given 55% of the territory, of the BEST land including water resources. The Zionists were planning to take the whole lot anyway, as Ben Gurion stated in the 1930's. Give the Palestinians back their land that you so sneakily took from them.
Fatima, Your own people rejected the UN partition plan back then, so your whole point is moot about the DISPUTED territories. They are "Occupied" only in your mind... Go complain to the League of Nations about turning over "Palestine" to the British Mandatory power!
Dear All, Guys and Gals, get back on track... the European (Basically the Norway, Denmark and Sweden) standard is stricter than the US standard. It also has 13 channels to the US 10 amongst other things. I would buy this standard over the US standard.
Go check the map of the UN partition Plan of 1947. You will see that your kibbutz is in the area allocated to an arab state. You are therefore a jewish settler (just as much as the jews in my city), and thus an obstacle to peace.
thats how you justify colonization? The Brits did it 300 years ago so its ok for Israel now! we have moved on since those times (most of the world) and thats why only Israeli's don't think they are colonists when they continue to build 'Greater Israel'
I like apple products and bananas but I don't like people who insult each other.
Ask Peter how many Jewish people live (peacefully) in Australia?
Obviously both of you know better.Care to indicate how? Care to explain your understanding of banana republic, its application here and the other gratuitous insults m'sieu offered in his "truly has something meaningful to say" posting??
Ah yes, it's our dear occupier Maureen Ann, down under in occupied Australia. She's writing from her colonist settlement of Bathurst on occupied aboriginal land. So tell us, Maureen: are you going back to England where you came from, or should Israel use the successful Australian occupation model? Obviously, you want to show the Palestinians the best face from occupied Bathurst, so are you going to hand your home over to an Aborigine and leave this week? Or maybe just bulldoze your house and ask the Aborigines if you can stay and get Aboriginal citizenship? Or should we just do what you Aussies did: wait a couple of hundred years, say we're kind of sorry, and hand out a few scholarships and health clinics? I just love the Aussie occupation model!
Peter in Australia -- do you understand simple English words like petty, sarcastic, ignorant, condenscending? They apply to your response to Mr. Dupont, who truly has something meaningful to say.
and therefore congenitally superieur BUT until the details of the i Pad are made available, which they have not been, Israel is right to be safe than sorry. Things do come out of left field everywhere else in the world.La France I understand is different, nothing ever goes wrong. PS You do understand big words in English like banana republic and are prepared to show how it applies or being French you do not have to?
inciting killing of infidels is what YOU should concern yourself with rather than this.
This has nothing to do with security and communications and everything to do with protecting the local Apple importer, iDigital, who due to their high prices and the transportable nature of Apple's products actually only sold a small fraction of the Apple laptops, iPhones, and iPods that people in Israel have.
Israel is, basically, still at war with its enemies. Where are the peace treaties or the peace makers on both sides? One can argue who's fault it is, but the facts do not change as long as Hamas and Hezbollah are around. If i-Pods present any threat to Israeli security, they should not be sold.
It's good to laugh. The iPad uses the standard wireless frequencies that any smart phone or computer uses. Therefore every wireless communication in this banana republic should be illegal. How stupid can be an army whose communication can be intercepted by a $20 scanner bought at Radio Shack ?
More likely the REAL reason is ... Israel's much vaunted spook services are not set up to evesdrop on apple communications. It's no secret that apple has a very tiny presence in Israel. For a nation as paranoid as Israel, they would feel they have a lot to fear, if people were able to communicate in cyberspace without the military and security sensors making sure tbat no juicy tidbits were getting out. Remember this is the nation that created a technology to block phones from taking photos and clips, so their military is free to ignore it's own rules of engagement! Same reason they disallowed reporters from reporting on the carnage of cast lead. Think about it ...
Wouldn't it be nice if other countries could give Israel an honest answer too every once in a while too?
There are 2 regional telecommunications standards. The CCITT standards prevail in Europe and most of the world. The Bell standards prevail in the USA, and a few other places. There are some differences. Is it conceivable that the iPad only meets the US bell standards ? Thus the delay in releasing it to wider markets ? If so, then Israel is absolutely right, a non-conforming device may interfere with a range of other devices.
What do you expect from a theocratic dictatorship?
Wouldn't it be nice if Israel gave an honest answer to a question once in a while? No wonder nobody believes anything Israel says.
If the iPad tablet has the potential to cause interference with Israeli military frequencies, what about the military frequencies in other countries who have allowed the sale of the iPad? Could the Israeli military censor be the one who is instigating the ban of Apple's new computer in Israel?
