The Finance Ministry is today expected to ask the Ministerial Committee on Legislation to oppose a bill that would give an extra NIS 1.5 billion to the Jewish settlers evacuated from Gush Katif and the northern Gaza Strip in August 2005. The Knesset Finance Committee is expected to discuss the amendment tomorrow.
The private member's bill submitted by Kadima MK Zeev Elkin passed in preliminary reading last month.
The treasury is expected to ask Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to force all coalition MKs in the Finance Committee to oppose the bill. The Sela disenagement administration is also thought to be against the additional aid package.
A few months ago the treasury and MKs representing the 1,700 families evacuated in the disengagement agreed on an "absolutely final compensation" payment amounting to NIS 570 million, which brought the treasury's total cost for the evacuation to NIS 9.2 billion.
