Business in Brief
El Al is weighing whether to shift its flights to and from Moscow from the city's Domodedovo Airport as a cost-saving measure. A senior El Al source said a move to another airport is not currently in the offing, but El Al Chief Executive Eliezer Shkedi recently visited Moscow. He examined the possibility of moving airports after El Al received a proposal to transfer operations to a more outlying government-owned facility. Domodedovo has been privatized and is relatively near the city center. The enticements for the move include free office space, 30% fuel discounts and a 50% reduction on certain other fees. Israeli tourists continued to stay away from Turkey over the fall Jewish holidays, a decline that followed Israel Navy's confrontation in May with Turkish passengers on a flotilla bound for Gaza. The Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry reported a decline of 85% in the number of Israeli tourists in September compared to September 2009. The contrast was even starker when compared to 2008. In September of that year, 59,700 Israelis headed for Turkey, compared to 5,950 for the month this year. This summer, the big beneficiary in the shift by Israelis away from Turkey was Greece.
