Bar-On vows billions for Negev, Galilee
Finance Minister said the state needs to develop the periphery just as badly as the periphery needs to be developed.
The Finance Ministry plans to divert billions of shekels a year to advance the Negev and Galilee at the expense of central Israel. The money will be taken from budgets for education, industry and infrastructure in central Israel, in favor of the outlying regions. Finance Minister Roni Bar-On presented the program at the Negev Forum in Dimona Tuesday, saying that the state needs to develop the periphery just as badly as the periphery needs to be developed.
He also promised that the spending won't break the budget: money is being diverted, not added. He called on the government to divert budgets to build public institutions from central Israel to the Negev and Galilee, despite the public outcry the plan will evoke.
