Will Israel's first gay divorce pave the way for others?
The religious monopoly on marriage and divorce has effectively led to the widespread recognition of not only same-sex marriage, but also same-sex divorce.
The importance of last week's ruling at the Ramat Gan Family Court cannot be underestimated. For the first time ever in Israel, a civil court has approved a divorce – in this case, between Prof. Uzi Even and Dr. Amit Kama, two gay men who were represented by attorney Judith Meisels. In this way, the religious courts' monopoly over divorce in Israel has effectively been broken.
