Israel can't afford to have it all. Hard choices have to be made and Ben-Gurion showed how it's done. Meanwhile, the gov't cringing before the bellicose defense establishment is letting everybody down.
The late Moshe Zanbar had headed the Budget Department at the Finance Ministry in the 1960s. He went on to be governor of the Bank of Israel. Some years ago he described the roots of the conflict between Shimon Peres, the director-general of the Defense Ministry in the 1950s (and now the president), and Pinhas Sapir, the-then Industry, Trade and Labor Minister.
