It is difficult to count how many mixed marriages declined Aliya because they did not wish their children to be treated as a second classcitizens in Israel. I am one of them. Suffice it to say that at least 30% of Russian Jewish marriages' children are not recognised as Jews. Insistence of Orthodox on the literal interpretation of Halacha, demanding a matrilineal transmission of Jewishness separates Isrfael and the Jewish Diaspora , alienating a significant part of Jewish people from expressing their love, support and admiration for their spiritual land of their for fathers. The generational change is coming and young non-Orthodox Jews , feeling abandoned and rejected by their spiritual motherland, turning away from Israel in droves. The consequences of this situation are dire - low Aliya, refusal to identify with Israel and, quite often, hostility towards the =Jewish State. Israel, forced by the Orthodox Stream of Judaism, seem to hold the majority of its brethren, yes, the majority, in contempt by not recognising the diversity of the Jewish expression. Haredim, who do not work, have no many to pay taxs with and refusing to serve in the army are poor substitute for the most productive part of Jewish people, rejected by the state. Continued non-recognition of other streams of Judaism will lead to tragic consequences, unless remedied.
