There is no doubt Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz has a good sense of humor. Otherwise he wouldn't have said this weekend he plans to carry out a reform at the Israel Electric Corporation and abolish free electricity to the utility's workers once and for all.

Israel Electric is a dinosaur that is costing the state millions. Why should the employees pay no electricity bills, people who work for the railways don't have their family ride trains for free, if you work for the water company you don't get free water so why give free electricity to people who work for the electricity company? What the government needs to do now is break up Israel Electric and then privatise the company which will allow multiple electric companies to compete for our business. They did it in England and it works. Not smart to announce this on the eve of an election but it is one of those things that must be done. Governments are good at political matters whilst the private sector is best at running companies Do we want the government to continue pumping millions in tax money into keeping Israel Electric afloat or would we prefer it is spent on things like social housing because there is not an unlimited supply of money and for every Shekel one sector gets its a Shekel less to another sector. So do you want all your social programs or to bail out the electric company so we can keep it in the hands of the state?
