Amos Harel's fervent prayer for the well-being of Benny Gantz (Haaretz, August 1) isn't enough: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has already, with haughty vehemence, announced that only the political leadership will decide. Nor will the visit of America's Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta, turn the tables: Netanyahu, with the same haughty vehemence, has announced that only Israel will decide.

Bombing is crazy and will start an endless war with yet unimagined consequences. But such considerations seem irrelevant. It's all domestic politics, in Israel and in the US. Who knows whether Netanyahu really wants to bomb, but even if he isn't keen on it, how does he explain not going through with it after all that brave talk? Without looking like a phony or a fool, that is? And if he is going to do it, he has to do it before the US election. After that he loses his grip on US politics. Which is why Efraim Halevy's comment is spot on.
thank you
