The U.S. Constitution, which proclaimed that all men were born equal, still measured a slave as worth three-fifths of a free man. The founding fathers did not mean to degrade the slave but to benefit his master: by using this inhumane measuring stick, the southern states received overrepresentation in the House of Representatives.
