A few weeks ago I spoke at the University of Glasgow about my recent memoir, What They Saved. As I walked in the rain from our hotel to the lecture hall, I started worrying about my subtitle to the book and to the talk: Pieces of a Jewish Past.
'J' for Jewish
My editors had insisted that the word 'Jewish' appear somewhere in the title of my book. But was that label justified? I am still struggling to find what amount of 'Jewishness' would be just right for me.
