Just as the current intensive, prolific negotiations with the Palestinians were approaching their happy conclusion, with everything falling neatly into place, Israel suddenly raised a new demand: Without compensating the Jewish refugees from the Arab states, it won't agree to declare an end to the conflict.

Gideon Levy, always on the wrong side of every argument, forgets (as do most people) that a century ago, when everyone recognized Jerusalem and Hebron as ancient Jewish cities, Tel Aviv was a new "settlement" next to Arab Jaffa. Jaffan Arabs were slaughtering their new Jewish neighbors because the Arabs claimed the land of the new Tel Aviv. (Check out the cemetery on Trumpeldor St to see the gravestones of Jews killed by Arabs back then.) So, are the Tel Avivi land-thieves going to return to their original stomping grounds in Jerusalem and Hebron? Or is Gideon Levy going to smugly turn every article against the government, and never mind the facts?
thank you
