Endgame in Syria

The situation has become much worse, with a growing number of Salafists following their agenda of gaining political power through violence backing extremist groups that would impose an Islamic regime in the country.

The interview that Farouk Shara, the Syrian vice president, gave to the Lebanese daily Al-Akhbar this past Sunday, in which he implied that a negotiated settlement to the country's civil war is still possible, even at this late stage, is significant. Shara clearly stated that it is no longer a question of saving a family, but rather the country itself.
