Alas, it is time form U.S. Jews to realize that the responsibilities of an Israeli prime minister do not include taking them into consideration. He has to take care of the Israeli people and respond to them and their needs. American Jews should remember that before all they are Americans and maintain their focus on the United States.

PM Netanyahu knows from experience just how important liberal Judaism is for the Jewish people and the Jewish state -- He MUST appreciate the contribution of liberal Judaism in Israel, having benefited from sending his son Avner to the Frankel TALI school. I agree with this letter. Israel needs our support financially, and we american Jews and else where need Israel to accept us as we are. This could be why more american Jews are not making aliyah to Israel because of the discremination.

To Rabbi Yoffie: Dear Sir, Why don't you don't you simply enjoy your American way of life and leave us alone? You are there. You are well integrated US Citizens. You need to add another group of Jews to your list of the rejected ones. The Messianic Jews (not Christianized Jews) are totally rejected even-though they practice the Jewish faith but accept the Jewish Messiah, Yeshua.

The prime minister of Israel will never take you seriously until you knock down his support base. I suggest you send this letter to all American organizations, politicians, lobbies, religious groups etc that with blind loyalty support him and his nefarious policies. Dear Mr. Yoffie, I'm sorry to read you totally disregard the fact that not all Israeli citizens are Jews. Whether you like it or not, some Israelis are Christian, Muslim, agnostic or atheist. Some people say there is a discrepancy between the terms 'Jewish State' and 'democracy'. Reading your article makes me inclined to believe them. It is my opinion that Zionists should finally realise that Israel is not a Western, but a Middle Eastern country, and that all Israelis (or Palestinians - does the name really matter?) should learn to live alongside. Having distant relatives in the region, your letter really saddens me.

Karites are considered a religion separate from Judaism because of one issue of belief. That issue of belief is that Karites do not accept the Oral Law. I wonder who Yoffie thinks are closer to the practices of Orthodox Judaism. Karites or Reform?

Understanding the problem is quite simple; the solution is difficult. The founders of the American republic realized that religious beliefs and political necessity represent separate dimensions of reality. When these realities are fused within a political-territorial community religious beliefs become components of political necessity leading to deep-seated conflicts over the exercise of power. From the time of Constantine Christian leaders allowed the fusion of theology with political necessity and the result was unceasing warfare between Christians over the centuries. Diverse theological formulas became seeds of division because theological beliefs were used as political instruments. Today Christianity in its pluralism has been separated from political necessity in most if not all nation-states where Christians represent a majority. This arrangement allows Christians and others freedom of religion and the freedom to practice their religion according to their conscience. In America Jews, Christians, Muslims among other religious communities are equally protected against the infringement of their freedoms by state power controlled by one or another religion. The separation clause of the Constitution allows all American citizens to work for the universal common good. What I think Israelis do not understand is that Zionism has fused religious beliefs with political necessity resulting in what Jews are experiencing among themselves and what has been transpiring between Arabs and Jews since before the founding of the State of Israel. Religious values are humanized and more effective if not institutionalized within the political structure of the state.

All through the years that Rabbi Yoffie chaired the Reform Movement (the Union of Reform Judaism) he and his movement avoided any serious confrontation with Israel and acceded to one insult after another toward non-orthodox Jews. Now, freed from the position of power, the mouse tries to roar like a lion, but to no effect. Meanwhile, his successors in the leadership of the Reform movement jumped in lockstep to salute Israel's refusal to allow the symbolic gesture of affirmation of Palestinian observer status at the U.N., even praising the weak-kneed Hillary Clinton/Barack Obama move to vote against that minimal level of recognition. In so doing, the Reform movement and the U.S. both contributed to the credibility of Hamas, which points out that the Palestinian Authority's path of non-violence and cooperation with Israel has only led to Israel feeling more empowered to expand its West Bank settlements. Until there is a fundamental shift in the Reform movement toward unequivocal opposition to Israel's playing to the fundamentalists and to Israel's expansionist policies, and a real attempt to educate its own members in the rank and file of the Reform movement to the ethical bankruptcy of the current and likely next government in Israel, the Reform movement's outrage will be predictably politically lame and will have no impact in shifting American, much less Israeli, policies.

Rabbi Yoffe, If some Americans who decided that several articles in the US Constitution and a couple of Amendments didn't fit in with their beliefs and therefore declared themselves to be Reform or Conservative Americans and began living accordingly, do you think they should be considered to be good Americans by citizens who did not discard those articles and amendments?

the least we diaspora jews can do is be as supportive as possible, i'm sorry if your ego needs a thank you. it is not our children risking their lives defending israel. it is israelis who do all the heavy lifting, we should be thanking them, if it helps rabbi i can send you a thank you card.
