As always, Ari Shavit hit the nail right on the head. But he left one final comment out: this is exactly what the Obama administration and others in the American Political Establishment wanted. To make Israel's survival become 100% dependent on the U.S. For only then, America will finally be able to control and manipulate Israel's foreign policy and behavior in all areas, and unconditionally. Obama has relentlessly pursued this one goal: to strip Israel from controlling it's own destiny. So far, Israel has "fallen" for it. I say: wake up Israel, wake up B. Netanyahu- before its too late!

How would Israel not be able to lead a normal life if Iran got the bomb? Which they havejust offered to sign a commitment to the UN not to have. (Yes the story was buried).

I would not argue with this article, for the situation it describes has been increasingly obvious for quite a while. I am surprised that Israel has placed itself in such a delicate position. As for the comments I read here, I hope they do not reflect Israeli opinion, for the sake of Israel.

The classic scenario of the boy who cried wolf. Israel made itself irrelevant based upon the repeated false warnings. Now that the wolf is truly in the hen house, no one will listen.

Iran that is by the way not threatening America, and if not having that war Israel will decline, says Shavit. However, one million settler occupying plan may perhaps help partially prevent that decline in the eventual absence of bloody conflict on which Israeli flourishing depends according to Haaretz senior journalist.

Can we get some real commentators in Haaretz. No one can stop Iran. Just like no one can stop North Korea. It is a reality Israel and other countries in the area will have to learn to live with. Just as South Korea lives with a belligerent north. The real culprits are people like Ari Shavit who pretend that there is a military solution to stopping Iran. A military solutions to stopping Iran/North Korea entails WW III. The leverage is not big enough to push the world into that. Those who suggest otherwise are sidetracking Israel from pursuing constructive solutions: 1. spread its population centres; 2. address the Palestinian/Israeli issue; 3. encourage assimilation of the Israeli Arab/Palestinian populations in an integrated Israeli/Palestinian state (For those who do not understand words that are not explicit - encourage conversion to Judaism). All these are in Israel's hand. Obama is an inspiring personality. A credit to the American people. But Israel's fate is in Israel's hands. Israel will flourish. Ari Shavit will decline/has declined. That's certain.
