"Arabs, get out"
If the inciters succeed in expelling the Arab MKs from the Knesset, it will be the final straw. Forget justice: it's plain stupid… and frightening.
By Gideon Levy Tags: Israel newsAlright, let's say they succeed. Let's say that the racist nationalist members of Knesset achieve their aspirations to kick the Arab member out of the Knesset. Let's assume that the aspirations of the sweet-lipped extremist Otniel Schneller, the "democrat" Ofir Akunis, and the nationalist Avigdor Lieberman come to pass and the Knesset is free of Arabs.
What would happen next? Behind this incitement campaign, like every other, there is no motivation other than arousing the darkest and most basest instincts: 'Arabs, get out' – not to mention 'Death to the Arabs.' So the Arabs are out, what then?
Even in the second round of the verbal lynching of Knesset member Hanin Zuabi this past weekend, including all the lies ( she "fought with Israeli soldiers," joined the "terrorists," "objected to removing evacuating wounded soldiers") put forward by politicians and television show hosts, calls arose to eject her from the Knesset, naturally.
It's already completely kosher – the calls to eject Hanin, and you, Ahmed Tibi, Mohammed Barakeh, Jamal Zahalka, and their friends are no longer only right-wing fantasy. The legitimization of the calls, in the wake of the crushing silence of most other politicians, demonstrates how deeply the aspiration behind it has put down roots.
They may be ignoramuses when it comes to democratic ideals - but those calling for the ejection of Arab MKs must at least say what will happen once Israeli Arabs are deprived of representation in the Knesset. Will Arab citizens vote for Yisrael Beitenu? Doubtful. Will they vote for Akunis in the primaries? Unlikely.
Will they place their ballot for McCarthyist Kadima? Change their views and join the Zionist movement, which brought them the Nakba - only don't ever mention it? Become Zu Artzeinu activists? Im Tirtzu foamers-at-the-mouth? Or maybe somehow they'll disappear entirely?
The State of Israel owes a great debt to the Arab public and to the members of Knesset that represent it. They are more separatist than the Basques in Spain (although with many more reasons to be separatist than the Basques), and also, of course, much less violent and subversive than them.
The fact that they have yet to choose to boycott the state and its institutions and to stop participating in the game of democracy, which is corrupt to begin with, as far as they are concerned – a game from which they are almost completely excluded – is nothing short of amazing.
Instead of thanking them for this, instead of appreciating their tolerance and restraint, their basic loyalty – we push them out, specifically now. Forget morals and democracy, justice and equality – is there anything stupider than this? Is it not clear to the inciters what the alternative is to the continued participation of the Arabs in the game of democracy?
The lives of Arab Israelis bear no resemblance to the lives of a Jewish Israeli. He is born into crowded conditions and neglected neighborhoods. In 62 years, the state has not lifted a finger to help the Arab populace, which constitutes a full fifth of the state's citizens, to establish a single new settlement.
The Arabs are weaned on deprivation from birth, the discrimination follows them from their earliest days. They can never bring up their past, they cannot define themselves as they wish ('Palestinian?' How dare they?), and sometimes they don’t even feel comfortable speaking their own language.
Try being an Arab and finding an apartment or a job. Surrounded by Zionist institutions that work to banish them, from the Keren Kayemet LeIsrael – Jewish National Fund to the Israel Lands Administration, a new set of laws intended to repress them, a justice system that discriminates between them and the Jewish citizens – an entire web of life of a second-class citizen in every way possible.
Day and night they hear that they are a 'demographic threat' or a 'fifth column,' that the Negev and Galil must be 'Judaized,' that they must be expelled from their lands. Now they hear that the Knesset must be purified of their representatives, as well.
It's likely to happen. In a society whose institutional defenses of democracy have started to deteriorate, nothing is safe any more. One day, perhaps we will no longer have Arab MKs, or at least none that represent their constituents. And on that day, Arab Israelis will know that their exclusion from their state has become total and complete.
And what do the inciters believe will replace Hadash, United Arab List - Ta'al, and Balad? And who will replace Barakeh, Zuabi and Tibi? What will replace the speeches, difficult and bitter as they are, from the Knesset podium? The campaign trails and assemblies? The public protest that is for the most part law-abiding?
You know the answer very well. The answer is frightening and dangerous.

all self respecting Arab MK should leave the Knesset now in a collective move, their presence now is only legitimizing a system which is branding them as second class MK.
it would be great, even better ISRAEL Without Levy
What a great idea!!!!
You might not like what you see.
"Arabs, get out" and save yourselves from the Semite-hating 'democrats' !
as usual Haaretz with Levy with his pickled thought showed its true face by making it sound as if only arab MK were removed from the Knesset. It was already proven as for any jew or arab who behaves in a TREACHEROUS way and they are a bunch mentioned above, they should be barred from office. These people do not represent anything but Treason and should be exposed and barred from public offices as they endanger themselves and Israel
Why, that would mean that Israel ha sfinally reclaimed it sovereign territory from the sojourners and trespassers. How wonderful!
Gideon Levy, in his latest venomous attack against Israel, claims that Israeli society is racist. What Gideon Levy fails to mention is that, even though Israeli society is not perfect, it's still the most democratic society of the Middle East, where its minorities are offered the best chances to succeed, both study-wise and career-wise AND politically. Instead of keeping on attacking Israel, maybe it's time for Gideon Levy to mention the way Jews are/were treated in muslim countries or mentioning the fact that e.g.in Saudi Arabia only Islam is allowed and anyone converting from Islam to any other religion is put to death? " Thanks Eytan great post
There are Arab and Druze members from the Likud, Labor and even Yisrael Beiteinu parties. There certainly should be Arabs as well as Chareidi people in the Knesset, Courts, and public sector as well as the secular Jewish descent population, but there is no room in Israel for anti-Jewish parties like Balad.
The slaughter in Schechem and the revenge that went totally out of control and was totally without proportions. Reading all these Hate-Postings reminds me of the deranged brothers Simeon and Levi. Oh poor Jacob who had such crazy sons ! Obviously you need a new Jacob to put you guys in your place - in Europe racists are put to prison for hate-crimes. In Israel they are vindicated and morally supported.
a few weeks ago was an awesome articel in german ZEIT by volker perthes a scientist on ME. he wrote about israels three future possibilities: 1.: "2-state-solution" - fast. 2.: de-facto a "big israel" which results in apartheid or 3.: one big "israel-palestine" which looses its jewish character. - it was a hard cold analysis. the authors reputation is above any doubts.
.The people have decided for a jewish state .Inspite of the enormous financial and media power which the authors camp is using the Kulturkampf has been decided on behalf of a jewish state. The time has come to respect the people"s choice.
Where is the defense for Rabbi Kahane and the Kach party? I would bet that this author probably was happy to have Rabbi Kahane banned. Hypocrisy and self-hating suicide. This is what happens when Jews drop the Torah, they drop common sense and normalcy also.
Gideon you are on my Mt. Rushmore of heroes. If you continue with calling out the perpetrators of oppression you will force them to discredit you. As I see it being declared persona non grata or being on an "enemies list" is an honor equivalent with a military medal of honor. Noam Chomsky, Norman Finkelstein and Gideon Levy lead the way. Discredited scholars like Schlomo Sand and Avi Schlaim at least have tenure and can't be kicked out. Gideon we need you on a speaking tour in the US before they throw you in jail.
Imagine a Knesset where Arab MKs directed their energies to helping their constituents and improving their lives, rather than spying for Hezbollah, aiding Hamas, and just generally attacking the State of Israel on every international venue they go to, including enemy states.
as has been customary up to now..?
Its not just the nationalists that would like to see the arabs out the Knesset I think the vast majority of jews secular and orthodox would like to see the arabs kicked out the political establishment. It doesn't mean we are all going to fall in love with the other parties but we want to get rid of the arabs and it is a fact that the arab MKS do not join the Knesset to put state interest first they are there to put arab interests above everything else. The main aim of the arab parties is to bring an end to the concept of a jewish state they want a country where religion is a private matter and there is no national religion where any group has preference ( jews ). They don't want a State of Israel they want a binational arab majority state which includes the palestinians and their first loyalties are to other arab countries rather than to the state because they are arabs which is the main reason they are not required to join the IDF. Everybody seems to hate the religious block wants to see Shas and the other religious parties thrown out the Knesset because all they do is fight for haredi interests. The arab parties are exactly the same siingle interest parties that do not aim to form a government alone just to try and influence government and pushing the cause of their individual interests. Thats fine for politics but its not for the good of the country. If we wanted a country with a political system that actually worked properly we would get rid of all single issue parties no matter what their cause ( arabs included ) we would have maybe 3 major parties whose MKS are directly elected that way the parties put the country first and individual MKS put their constituants first. That means if your an arab you will not consider palestinians to be your constituents it will be the Israelis who put you into the Knesset so you will concentrate on Israeli interests and the party you join will not be out there fighting only for arab interests it will be wanting whats be the party of government which means dealing with a range of issues. The currently 12 parties with Knesset seats all but the main three Likud, Labor, Kadima are in it for their own individual causes - Yisrael Beatanu wants to secularize the country, the arabs fighting for arabs, the religious for religious issues, far left fighting for far left ideology and far right fighting for far right ideology non of the minor parties stand to run the country in their own right just to try and influence the people who do win the election whoever it might be.
Wow! How about one very scary human being?
And the solution is single member districts for one house in a two-house Knesset. And then limit the powers of the ideology-party-based house, like not allowing them to initiate basic law changes. or you could require a 60% supermajority for anything to pass the ideology-party-based chamber. You undercut some extreism that way, too.
"they want a country where religion is a private matter and there is no national religion" Many Jews want exactly that.
like Hitler who purged all parties from the Reichstag because only the NSDAP served the interests of the state ..
Hitler up to his invasion of the Sovjet Union . Nothing would have changed had they were not purged from the Reichstag ,which has never played any role in determining Nazi policy anyhow. The whole comparison to Hitler era is typical for Dünkle Deutche like you ,imbued with old Sovjet Union's hatred of Israel amplified by your internal German schweinehund.
Israeli Arabs are Palestinians. They claim this all the time. They support Hamas and Hizballa in their wish to kill all Jews in Israel. They say this openly all the time. For them, Israeli citizenship is meaningless. Western type democracy cannot integrate two such distinct entities as Jews and Israeli Palestinians. Attacking their Knesset representatives in fruitless - I'll give you that. But we must not delude ourselves: when the Palestinian state will exists, Israeli Palestinians will have to swap the Israeli citizenship they hate, with the Palestinian citizenship they want. One cannot solve all problems with legalistic arguments. Even if we would give Israeli Palestinians any sorts of extra rights and privileges, they would still hate us, and throw us in the sea if they could - including their lovers in the extreme left.
The future is hard to read, because we make our world, there is no destiny? An optimist would think that economic growth and the desire for all people to have quality of life would make them cooperate for the common good of all people. A pessimist would think that the worst part of human nature would create a bigoted world, a police state of the future that Orwell wrote about in 1984 (he was quite a pessimist before he died and wrote the book) where after a small nuclear war, people live in poverty under a corrupt govt, Big Brother, who suppresses their very existence. It's hard to read the future; maybe the prophets can warn us what it could be like. We have to decide what we want. Xenophobia is a relic in the brain, left over from an animal and caveman existence. Human nature is social and cooperative. It's hard to know, which is the stronger side of human nature, fate (biological predeterminism) or choice (free will), an ability to overcome our evil nature and prejudice.
they are 1000 times better off in Israel than in any other arab country. So that if they dont like it they are free to go
How about asking every memeber of Knesset, and for that matter, every public servant paid by the State of Israel, to swear to respect, defend and pledge aliegance to the jewish state of Israel. As its is done in most democracies around the world. This would take care of this issue.
Just as long as you let all Israeli citizens be called Jewish...
Legislators in the US are not asked to pledge allegiance to the Christian white United States. Requiring this would be demeaning to our minorities. Allegiance is pledged to the constitution, not to a the majority religion or racial/ethnic group.
those of do not feel comfortable in the jewish state of Israel are welcome to move to the islamic state of Iran.
should learn basic procedures, such as not joining controversial flotillas that are trespassing on Israeli space... even if they have the best of intentions...
So you would not object to male Knesset members joining "controversial flotillas that are trespassing..."???
As some other readers have noted, the only real solution is obvious. The arabs of the palestinian mandate (what is today Jordan, israel, Gaza and the West Bank) were militantly oppsed to the nascent Jewish reemergence in those same areas. First England unilaterally gave the arabs 2/3 of the disputed territory and created the State of Jordan. Subsequently the UN decided to divde the remaining 1/3 again between jews and Arabs, giving a very small non-contiguous territory to the Jews. The jews accepted the Arabs (as usual) rejected and went to war to wipe out the jews. The results was israel with an Arab minority within its borders. Again in 1967 the arabs embraced their war ethic provoking the 6 day war wuith the goal of killing off the jews and again lost. Now if finally we are to resolve this 100 year dispute, the most logical and healthy resolution is an Arab state with all or most of the arab population in it and a jewish state with all or most jews in it. To do that w need land swaps where the arabs of southern galilee will finally live in the arab led country they so aspire to and the jews living contiguous to israel being incorporated into israel. This is an honest approach to the real underlying conflict which addresses to the maximum the national goals of each party. The fact that the arabs living in israel today do not agree to such a deal can only mean one of 2 things, they care more about living the miserable conomic life described by levy in israel than the wonderful life of freedom in their own arab state. or that they view their continued presence as israeli citizens as an opprtunity to ultimately undermine the jewish national entity. Either way, we need to excise them fromour body politic. Not by moving them from their home but rather by moving the border to exclude them from our home.
Will it ever get old for you?
His arguments are beyond extreme. They are mean to inspire hatred. No one has asked for Arabs to be removed from the Knesset. People who are actively committed to our enemies should be removed. No members of the Pro-Nazi Bund would have served in the US senate during or after the 2nd World War. `we shouldn't "turn the other cheek" to people who sleep with our enemies. We are not that stupid.
How about amputating someone's hands for stealing? How about building ONE synagogue or ONE church in Saudi Arabia? Maybe it's time for Gideon Levy to stop his anti-semitic and self-loathing venomous attack against Israel and, instead, to fight for REAL democracy in the whole of the Middle East. But, since Gideon Levy prefers Israel to be replaced by the bi-national Isratin, it's obvious that Gideon Levy does not believe in the Jewish heritage and that he doesn't believe that the Jews deserve their own country. If this is the case then one wonders what Gideon Levy is doing living in Israel.Let him move to Ramallah or any other Arab place. The Pals could've had their state in 1948. Instead, they chose to attack Israel...and lost. Had the Jews lost in the 1948 war, all the Jews would've been massacred. Gideon Levy omits to mention this.It strikes me as rather absurd that the current Pal leadership has to be forced in order to start peace talks, since the Peace Quartet and Israel seem to want the creation of the Pal state much more that the Pals want it. Why?Having peace with Israel means an end to the Pals demands from Israel and an end to the conclict.Since the Pals never really wanted their own state, but only Israel's destruction, the PA finds itself in a situation in which it doesn't know what to do. And since Abbas has no authority over anything more than Ramallah, he cowardly passes responsibility of all Pal decisions to the Arab League. This is absurd and only proves that, right now, Israel does not have a peace partner.Suppose there's an agreement between Israel and the PA. What happens then with Hamas in Gaza? Since they will never accept the PA's authority, they can only remain what they are now: a semi-authonomous entity that's at war with both the PA and Israel. Before the Arabs criticize Israel and keep on using the Arab-Israeli conflict as a means to unite their undemocratic societies, let me give the Arabs a little food for thought: you accuse the Jews of conquering what we call Israel. Maybe you forget the fact that the whole of the Middle East and North Africa were conquered by the Arabs/Muslims forcefully? So that is allowed? And how do you want Israel to make with the Pals, when Pal children are taught to adore Pal suicide bombers, whose names adorn Pal squares and streets? Is this Israel's peace partner? I don't think so.
... certainly among ourselves, but certainly not towards the Pals among us... we have a long way to go, and nothing to be smug about, most especially we should not foster false illusions about ourselves...
Israel seems to be negotiating against herself, always moving the bar, getting nothing in return, except terror and bloodshed. How can anybody disagree with your analysis ???
I was to young at the time, but they say Kahane was a racist and he was thrown out. So why is it Ok to throw out Jewish racists, but not non-Jewish racists.
who cares
The abuse by the Arab MKs has to be put to an end. No country in the world would allow their members of Parliament to be disloyal to the state and fraternise with its enemies. These MKs want to see an end to the state of Israel and say so.In any Arab country these MKs would be hanged in public.
Every democratic state would allow it's members of parliament to protest against the actions of the government. And very few of them would call that "disloyal" or fraternizing with the enemy"
When you travel to Syria, Iran, etc,,, to neet the enemy of YOUR Country, that is fraternizing. Would John McCain or Hillary Clinton ever go to meet the Taliban or Al Quida?? c'mon, open those eyes and look. The stupid Israeli leadership let them get away with this for too long. Ahmed Tibi HATES Israel and Jews. He was Arafat's advisor. Could one ever imagine Mccain ever being Bin Laden's advisor ?? He's be HUNG ! !
But at least Israel would have to stop its silly proclaimations about being the only democratic state in the ME. Come on Israel. Show us your true colours.
How are Arab MKs separatists, exactly? Do they want to separate any part of Israel from the state? I'd rather say that what they ask for is not independence, but the recognition of their rights as the native inhabitants of the land, and complete equal rights and status, which is far from a reality. Many Israeli Arabs are probably more "unionist" than separatists, in that they would prefer to join the Occupied Territories in a single, secular, non-denominational state.
Have you asked them? What I knowis that they want the end of Israel and another arab country instead.
No chance of empathy or compassion. When people are convinced that everything bad stems from the existence of Arabs, they are not worried about the possibility that we might have a Knesset devoid of representatives of minorities. The opposite. And the authorities, well aware of this, know how to enhance those feelings, since frightened and angry people are easier to manipulate and to be lead to injustices and violence. All at the service of the ideal of Jewish supremacy. Frightening indeed.
Liberal rights will not be undermined in israel and will not be undermined in Europe either. I mention Europe because of the increasing "liberal" hysteria ( worst than in israel) about the new legislation "against'??? Muslims. In reality what is happening is that majorities are beginning to realize that besides being tolerant towards minorities, there is something else...that liberal democracies want. Majorities are also part of the game, and what can we do if these majorities also have a vision of how society should look like. Nothing wrong with that as far as the political rights of the minority are preserved. In short you (the minority) have the right to complain and demand and I the majority have the right to say NO. What is so dramatic about that? Dont like it.....??? well you have channels to protest or else....the gates are open to go away...why not?
The solution is two states, one for the Palestinian Arabs where most of the Arab palestinians now living in Israel will "certainly" have all the rights they do not have in Israel (according to Levy) and one for the Jews with as small a number of Arabs as possible;
"as small a number of Arabs as possible"
Gideon you know very well that the Israeli Arabs have so much more rights in Israel than anywhere in the ME so please keep it real, when Israeli Arabs become good and loyal citizens and their leadership behaves wise and does not behave like traitors they can stay in the Knesset and will be considered productive. Till then supported by your incitement they think they can demand a boycot of their state and yet be paid for by that same state by being a MK. No we are not stupid Gideon the majority had enough of Israeli Arabs who undermine the state and yet demand equal rights
Several meetings were organized between the most liberal zionists and the most liberal arabs. At the theoretical level Jews were ready to respond positively to all Arab demands. the only request was to accept that israel is a jewish country ( whateve that means) . The arabs rejected that request. Furthermore, lets suppose that tomorrow a Palestinian state will be established. Would Umm el Fahen accept to be included ( without moving from their homes) into the borders of the palestinian state????? never . They will reject be part of the Palestinian state. What does it mean? It means one single thing which is the root of all this conflict. Arabs reject the very idea that a jewish state will be part of this region. They are doing whatever it takes to erase it. The jewish majority has a right to defend itself as well.
Why should full-fledged Arab citizens of Israel be expected to be part of landswaps and become PA citizens? They have every right to live in Israel as any Jew. And they have every right to fight for the kind of country they want as any Jew. Oh yeah, except for the fact that Israel's 'democracy' only goes as far as the point where it conflicts with Israel's being a Jewish state. And to say that Israel's Arab citizens should be happy with their de facto second-class status because they have it better than anywhere else in the ME is almost disgusting. No, let me correct that. It is disgusting. Did you also tell America's blacks in the 30's, 40's and 50's that they should be happy with their second-class status because they had it better off than black people in Africa?
to live in israel and enjoy liberal rights. They can comply and raise their case in the knesset. Those rights should never be taken from them. By the same token the democratic majority has all the right to fight for what that majority think should be the national character of the state. Nothing more and nothing less. That is exactly what European democratic constituencies are doing in regard to Muslims demands in their countries. Muslims citiizens in Europe also believe that they are second class citizens. European majorities are responding to that claim with one single message. France is a secular state, Britian is anglican... and the pillars in the Netherlands do not include you ( Muslim) America ??????? What about America "racism sniffer" ????Have you anything to say about this utterly racist country in where the "non wealthy" are worst than second class citizens.? And what if they have the "formal" right to protest? I bet you that precisely any Arab in Nazareth is better off that white working class in Missuri. Let alone blacks.
It's not that hard to understand, a person wanting to remain in the same place from which he was born....
the Arabs would remain where there were born, it just would be a different country. The Jews did not "refuse" just didn't want the inconvenience of moving. A land swap would not involve moving physically.
Yes Black Americans who are the likes of Malcom X and Farakhan who claim whites are the devils should indeed have been forced to choose. Here however we have Israeli Arabs who complain in international institutions to be the victims of racism and who claim to be actually Palestinians and yet they do not want to be part of their future motherland. Strange or not? Or is it because their rights are here protected as a minorty while in the Arab countries like the future PA state or Hamas Gaza they do not have rights but rather can be murdered just for being a christian, gay, lesbian or for disagreeing witht the government.
No if you complain to the rest of the world how bad you have it and yet do not want to be part of your own peoples state your a hypocrite and should be treated that way
You did not answer my point! Israeli Arabs claim to be Palestinians and say they suffer so much in Israel so why not request to be part of a future Palestinian state? This monitor you did not answer
Under stress, most people (and groups) generally begin to show their worst sides. As things get more and more difficult for Israel in many ways, one of the things that becomes clearer and clearer is that the very fundamental core of the State is a never ending conundrum. It's time to face the inevitable: A Jewish democratic state is like oil and water. Shake it hard enough and it will temporarily mix. But the two substances will always separate. It's log past due to decide what kind of State we want. Defined by Jewish or defined by democratic. No state has ever happily been ruled by both an exclusive religious ideal and western democratic principles.
...Israel parties, be they on the left, right or center. This is not a revolutionary idea of course. Most parties in Israel have Arab members and representatives in both the local as well as the national political level. But these Arabs, instead of seeking provocations against the nation-state of the Jewish people, Israel, participate in the daily governance of the country of which they are part and parcel. Wouldn't it be the right thing for all Arabs to join the Israel political life in a way that is not intent on bringing about the demise of the state but rather serving it and its citizens...??!!
