It's hard to believe, but in Israel, in 2012, Ethiopian women are forced to receive injections of the Depo-Provera contraceptive. This injection is not a commonly prescribed means of contraception. It is considered a last resort and is usually given to women who are institutionalized or developmentally disabled. According to an investigation for journalist Gal Gabay's “Vacuum” documentary series shown on Israeli...

14 0 0Lack of Informed Consent is Abhorrent but Depo-Provera Does Not Sterilize
- By Feminist Activist
- 14 Dec 2012
- 06:22AM
While the racist, xenophobic nature of Israel's actions are inexcusable I must fact check this article: Depo-Provera does not sterilize women and it is a safe and commonly used contraceptive in the United States. It is an injection given every three months that acts much the same way birth control pills do. Most women who do not receive their shots on time are very capable of getting pregnant right away. NO ONE should ever be forced to use any kind of contraception without fully informed consent, but readers should know that DMPA is not the devil here.

13 0 0not sure where the author got her information on depo provera..
- By annabelle

- 00:47AM
But it is a very commonly used birth control method in Canada and the US. I don't see how it would be any different in Israel. I don't think women should be forced to receive the shot but there's nothing unusual about the type of birth control. Depo provera isn't this shady, dangerous drug no one uses - in reality it's quite popular as birth control so the author is really mistaken.

This is a response to some of the people who think it is legal for a government to decide weather to sterilize or inject contraceptive to its citizens. Whether this article is mentioning sterilization or don't know the specification of a medical process, it is outrageous for a government to decide for people who are conceived as backwards or illegitimate Jews. There is a reason for doing this and it is to depopulate. Obviously the Israelil government needs to work on its civil rights because what they are doing right now to the Ethiopian Jews or others (Palestinians) is not right and a violation of human rights. The Jews should understand that more than anyone in the world.

09 0 0Delayed Return to Fertility
- By Thandi
- 13 Dec 2012
- 05:57PM
Wiki states a warning/side effect: "Delayed return of fertility. The average return to fertility is 9 to 10 months after the last injection. By 18 months after the last injection, fertility is the same as that in former users of other contraceptive methods" If women are being forced to use this as a contraceptive it sure as hell sounds like an attempt at eugenics to me.

How on earth a nation born out of disgust for centuries old racism and inequality will do the same up on its own citizens simply because their colour is different. It seems to me that Israel has now forhotten its true essence. May I say Israel ihas committed the same old sin by bowing down to the golden calf of hate!

While the birth control of this drug lasts only 3 months, fear and depression made worse by exaggerated worry can lead to worsening depression and suicide. Great care and truth should be used when writing about this. I don't see that in this inflamitory article.

03 0 0please clarify
- By Jenny
- 13 Dec 2012
- 00:20PM
as far as I know, this drug is a contraceptive that needs repeated doses, and NOT a means of sterilization. It is also commonly used throughout the west. If women are being forced into using it against their will, then that is heinous, but that is not the same as forced sterilization. I think this article needs some clarification.

not the point
- By Jenny
- 16 Dec 2012
- 09:21AM
I'm not arguing about the consent issue - which is, as I said, heinous - nor about the possibility that this is a deliberate policy of eugenics. What am I am saying is that it is NOT forced sterilization. These women can go on to have children. And when an article so blatantly misrepresents something so basic, I want clarification from another source on the situation or I'll be reluctant to believe it.

this is a ridiculous article. In fact Depo Provera is one of the most widely used contraceptives worldwide to this day and is considered safe for healthy women. Hundreds and thousands of woman use it regularly. The effects of Depo Provera last approximately 3 months on the body- not sterilization. A woman who experiences side effects or who does not wish to continue the contraceptive for other reasons, simply will decide not to get another injection. It is standard procedure to offer contraception- whether pills, injections, condoms, or other methods- to women leaving the hospital after giving birth and Ethiopian women are no less entitled to the standard of care that other women receive. Haaretz you should not have people with zero medical knowledge writing articles about things they know nothing about. The only thing I can think of is that possible misunderstandings occurred due to language barriers, which of course is a hospitals responsiblity to have qualified interpreters available.
