Yishai: We're losing U.S. Jews through Reform assimilation

American Jews present at Presidential Conference for Shas chief's comments voice indignation.

The chairman of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, Eli Yishai, said on Thursday that Reform Jews in the United States were "disappearing" through assimilation.

Yishai, who is also the Interior Minister, made the comments at the second Presidential Conference in Jerusalem.

The majority of guests attending the conference were American Jews, most of whom were Reform Jews, who reacted with vocal indignation upon hearing the minister's comments.

Yishai said in response that he was only reiterating data that was passed on to him, and that it is a commonly known fact that U.S. Jews are dwindling due to rapid assimilation.

Mr. Yishi the reason you are loosing this people is people like you and the rest of the ultra orthodox. Your intolerance to anyone that wishes to practice Judaism in a different way. Mr. Yishai we are no in the 21 century your groups still like they live in the shtetel in Eastern Europe 200 years ago. What was relevant than isn't anymore today. It is all right if you want to live and practice that way but don't shove it down others throat. You will alienate less people and less will turn away from Judaism. In simple language You live your life as you wish but don't impose it on me.

    Assimilation and Low Birth Rate

Because of the high assimilation rate and very low birth rate, both encouraged by the Reform movement, this group of Jews is well on the way to extinction. They are trying innovations including: accepting those with only a Jewish father, reintroducing Jewish rituals and recruiting in Israel. All of this is too little and too late.

REform movment did not lose the Jews. It was and is the stupidity of us older Jews. If it wasnt for the Reform more would have been lost.

It's true that a high percentage of Reform Jews in the USA assililate. Some is due to second-generation patrilineality, some is due to other reasons. Reacting with indignation is absurd, really. That doesn't mean Reform Judaism is bad. It is an opportunity to tackle a fact. Just as it would be valuable to tackle other bad facts about the other streams, including Yishai's Mizrahi ("Sephardic") ultra-orthodoxy.

Yishai is an ultra ortodox backward who leave in darkness of the middle age. He demonstrate his lack of knowledge about the Reform Judaism, since he never leave his ghetto(mentally)of Bnei Brak and leaving on the back of the secular Israelis

Yishai has to be the most ignorant man in Israeli public life, and that's saying something. Yesterday, he snubbed a group of children of guest workers. Todays he's dismissing the Reform. He has no spine and less brains.

It will take many years..maybe centuries for the population of Jews in the US to stabilize and maybe grow. Jews are leaking on the Reform end and growing on the Orthodox end and splitting down the middle at center. The future of pseudo-feel good Jewish life lies with the reform. The future of Torah Judaism in the US is with the Orthodox. The future of Jews in general is in Israel where the Jewish population will continue to grow. www.tzomet.net

If reform Jews are offended by statistical data...

If reform Jews are offended by statistical data they should do something about it. I am not saying Orthodox Jews are perfect, far from it, in many ways I would agree that it is better to be Secular/Reform than it is to be Orthodox. But the fact remains Non-Orthodox Judaism is currently unsustainable. Even with converts and affiliated intermarried spouses, the sub replacement fertility rate is enough to drastically reduce the total population. If the Reform movement does not want to go the way of the Sadducees and Karaites its members need to be more affiliated, have a better Jewish education, and have more kids.

So it's possible for Jewish people to live safe from anti-semitism without actually needing to build a jewish majority ethnocracy? I guess Jews can do just fine without a Jewish state, which would explain why so many young american jews don't care about Israel.

Walk into any reform temple and you will find that about 25% of the people there are not even Jewish. This is a result of the reform decision to classify people born of Jewish fathers and gentile mothers as Jews. This is against the Torah which says that the birth mother determines the religion of the child. Without these inflated numbers from mixed marriages reform temples would be way down in numbers. The only movement that is actually growing are the frum people. This is a result of high birth rate and retention rate among the frum. They are the future of Judaism both in Israel and in the US.

Shas Orthodoxy is a blend of medieval Polish religion and North African varieties. Hardly an appropriate combination for modern young people in the material, cultural or spiritual arena. If Jews are leaving orthodoxy it is because it supplies very little relevance to modern life. How gauche and grotesque for the Interior Minister to denounce Americans in attendance at a conference when their help is vital to Israel's survival . Tilt. Game over. Reboot. Foot in mouth award to Eli Yishai.
