Yale creates first university-based center to study anti-Semitism

Center to offer courses, conferences and seminars; director: anti-Semitism has re-emerged internationally.

By The Associated Press

Citing growing anti-Semitism around the world, Yale University said Tuesday it has created the first university-based center in North America dedicated to the study of the subject.

The Yale Initiative for Interdisciplinary Study of Anti-Semitism will provide a forum for scholars to research contemporary causes of anti-Semitism and ways to combat it, said Charles Small, the center's director. The center plans to offer courses, conferences and seminars, but it is too soon to say whether there will be a degree program, he said.

"Anti-Semitism has re-emerged internationally in a manner that many leading scholars and policymakers take seriously," Small said. "Because of this, there is a need to establish a high-caliber, interdisciplinary, nonpartisan, scholarly institute, so that students and faculty can engage these issues fully."

In a report last year, New York-based Human Rights First said racist and anti-Semitic violence was up dramatically in much of Europe. In Britain, for instance, anti-Semitic personal assaults doubled in 2004 over the previous year, said the organization, formerly known as the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights.

Small cited France, where the torture and killing of a young Jewish man in February has rekindled concerns about anti-Semitism.

"Increasingly, Jewish communities around the world feel under threat," Small said. "It's almost like going back into the lab. I think we need to understand the current manifestation of this disease."

Small is also the founding director of the Institute for the Study of Global Anti-Semitism and Policy, an independent nonprofit organization. He earned his doctorate of philosophy from Oxford University and has taught at the University of London, Ben Gurion University, Tel Aviv University and Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

The new center, which will be based at the Institution for Social and Policy Studies, will run a seminar series, "Anti-Semitism in Comparative Perspective," on Thursday afternoons. The first speaker, on September 28, will be James Carroll, Boston Globe columnist and prize-winning author, who will speak on "The Church and the Jews: A Lesson in History."

Anti-Semitism is nothing more than a derogatory label that Jewish Supremacists use to vilify non-Jews who oppose or stand in the way of their evil agendas. Jewish Supremacism is enshrined in Talmudic doctrines which put Jews on a pedestal and discriminate against non-Jews.

With typical arrogance and tonnes of propaganda a new chapter in brain washing is going to be created.Don't you realise that old ways ,when a cry "ANTISETISM" were good enough to protect your lies are gone for ever? That more and more people see you as you realy are :mad and dangerous, ready to provoke a nuclear ,real holocaust only to cover other monstrous lies manufactured and fed to the world by you? More and more experts from medical field is trying to explain your action by hereditary madness. But in this case maybe we need a jont resolution issued by Security Council to isoalte you first and treat the madness as a second step to protect the rest of the world? In psychiatry the madness you represent from millenia is called "projection." A sick person for example is convinced that the whole world is agains him/her and acts accordingly provoking agression in return.

As a jew and an Israeli i feel the word "Anti Semetic" is unfortuently a word used far to frequently and is used against anyone or nation that disagrees with the politics of Israel. The very term antisemitism has become invalid because of this over use. Yes of course there is anti semitism in the world but it all comes down to , hatred , intollerence and lack ou understanding and comapssion for of those that are different. Why dont they also include homophobia, racism and prejudice in their studies as well ?

Anti-Semites used to be those who hated Jews for being Jews. Now anti-Semites are those the Jews hate for supporting justice in Paletine. It is a meaningless concept, worthless, cheap PR hucksterism.

The rise of antisemitism is caused by Israel calling any digression with its policies or criticism "anti semitism"! Palestinians are mad because they live in a big concentration camp and Israel wont give them the land it stole? Anti semitism! Lebanon full of cluster bomb mines? Anti semitism! Pointing out that Israel a non signer of NPT is full of nukes? Why that is Anti semite as well. Maybe, just maybe, taking responsability for ones actions other than hiding behind ones religion/race would fix the problem... Nah, being the choosen ones who everyone just mystically hates for no reason at all is more comvenient..

JoJo, Please take a class on Soviet history and you'll discover how the Soviets rivaled the Nazis with their camp system and mass disappearances. No way was there any real committment to rationality -- except rationalizing the mass murder of people for no reason at all

Yale should definitely head off to see the concentration camps the Palestinians have to live in. Down with the Lebanese apartheid regime! It is sad that Cheewawa thinks focusing on Lebanon's anti-Palestinian racial laws should stop Yale from studying other kinds of discrimination, too. But I guess there's no getting past the one-track minds of some of the racist nutbars out there...

Are Palestinian "refugee camps" "concentration camps? Who set them up, who administers them? Ein Hilweh same as Auschwitz..So Jews are Nazis, right? Therefore who should give a damn about anti-Semitism. Jews don't deserve any sympathy..Classic, vicious hatred of Jews..(At least you spare us the stupid argument that since Arabs are Semites, Arab "anti-Semitism" cannot possibly exist..)

U stole my words. Antisemitism is of religious origin.Christian and Moslem scholars will not face that truth easily. So the'll try to deflect the truth.Hope , of course , that I'm wrong. I might say too something never heard anyone say--- With the destruction of the Soviet Union , which represented rationality over religion , one should not be surprised by the sudden rise of religious wars . Antisemitism is part ojf this war as it always has been. ( I dont mean to imply that the SU was a beacon of rationality but as a political unit it represented secular thinking vs religious"spirituality" which really means--get lost in heavenly thoughts and leave the world to old politicians)

Let's say for argument's sake that Palestinians are being persecuted as you say. We accept that as fact for the moment. Your argument appears to be that because of the policies of the country of Israel, anti-semitism is valid. And/or until the State Israel stops treating Palestinians how they are, Jews around the world, Israeli, non-Israeli, otherwise, all deserve anti-semitism. Can you not see how people might see that as further proof that baseless anti-semitism is alive and well?

turn it into a propaganda campaign. It won't solve anything. It's like those "dialogues" you try to have with your spouse where you are suppose to be figuring out what the problem is and how to fix it but in an actuality it's a sophmoric event set up so you can endure a tirade of old tired whiney complaints and demonizing... If the conclusion coming out of this "center of study" is, everyone hates Jews because they're haters who are hateful and they should not be hating... well, that's really useful, lets just go back to calling all Muslims terrorists, calling whiteys KKK members, calling Asians Bruce Lee, and blacks thiefs... just say we did research on it.

antisemitism as an irrational hatred towards Jews. That is why it is so hard to study or understand. Antisemities believe that "Jews rule the world", or at least the United States. When you point out that the American government, banking and other sectors, actually feature a number of races, and predominantly Anglo-European ones, they say, but they have influence behind the curtains. This "behind the curtains" idea is a superstition, like belief in witches, conspiracies, and ghosts. As long as there are human beings, some will believe in these irrationalities.

that 'the road to Auschwitz led through Rome' (a course taught here in Sydney by Dr. Paul O'Shea) and that the root cause is the Jews refusal to accept Jesus as the son of God. Just watch out for those 'scholars' who are anti-Semites in sheeps clothing.

The Yale program should be interesting and hopefully will define objectively what anti-Semitism is. Lots of people know what it is of course but no one has come up with a good definition that everyone can accept.

See textbooks from Saudi Arabia. Read Hamas Charter. Hear Arab/Muslim sermons. Read about the KKK. See how Europe learned nothing from its past. This is a good step and I applaud it. As long as they focus on both the past, present, and future of this disease of hatred towards Jews.
