Worsening anesthesiologist shortage threatens Israeli hospitals
Haaretz.com/Channel 10 daily feature for May 4, 2008.
By Haaretz Staff and Channel 10A severe shortage in anesthesiologists is stretching thin the ability of Israeli hospitals to provide proper care.
Due to the profession's lack of glamour and dwindling numbers of medical professionals immigrating from the former Soviet Union, there are currently six anesthesiologists in Israel for every hundred residents. Germany, on the other hand, has 20.
The precious few need to work around the clock in order to keep up with surgeries, which often have to be delayed.
