3D fetus: color and size are not a problem. Photo by Screenshot

An American couple believe they know what every expectant parent needs – a 3D model of their unborn fetus – and are raising money for a business that will do just that.

"Imagine meeting your baby before he or she is born," write Gerard and Katie Bessette on the crowdsourcing website where they're trying to raise the necessary funding.

"The pregnancy with your child is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Recall those feelings over again with your own 3D Baby.

"At 3D Babies, we create an adorable baby figurine resembling your baby's facial features and body position. We use your 3D/4D ultrasound or newborn baby pictures to create a unique artistic representation of your baby using the latest computer graphics and 3D printing technology. This is a great way to share the excitement of your new baby with family and friends. Your 3D Baby will be a treasured family remembrance of your pregnancy and new baby."

The Bessette couple add that their ultimate goal "is to bring a smile to the faces of parents, grandparents, and other family members as they recall the day that they met their little one. This product will become a treasured family heirloom."

And it's not just any 3D fetus. Parents can choose "a Lifesize 3D Baby, a Halfsize 3D Baby and/or a Mini 3D Baby … we reproduce the face as shown in your images and select the body position according to your request (gender visible or not). Finally, we use the color you select (light, medium, or dark) to put the finishing touches on your 3D Baby."

So far, Gerard and Katie have raised only $1,225 of the $15,000 they need to purchase a 3D printer.
