The Battle Over Memories of the 'Great War'

Europe is marking the centennial of the outbreak of World War I with an array of events. But is there a real desire to impart the lessons of that savage war, or is it all driven by war tourism?

One hundred years after it all began, World War I is undergoing a significant change in the collective European memory. Time, the world war that followed it and the unification of Europe seem to have nearly erased it from memory, and so Europe is currently investing a tremendous effort into preserving and remembering the lessons of “the war to end all wars.”
