World leaders congratulate Israel on Independence Day
Dozens of leaders sent Peres, Israel greetings; Obama on Independence Day: Our ties will only strengthen.
By Haaretz Service and Natasha Mozgovaya Tags: Yom Haatzmaut Hillary Clinton Barack Obama Israel newsU.S. President Barack Obama and other world leaders sent Israel greetings and warm wishes on the occasion of the country's 62nd Independence Day.
The relationship between Israel and the U.S. "will only be strengthened in the months and years to come," Obama said in a special statement.
"Minutes after David Ben-Gurion declared Israel's independence, realizing the dream of a state for the Jewish people in their historic homeland, the United States became the first country to recognize Israel," Obama said.
"To this day, we continue to share a strong, unbreakable bond of friendship between our two nations, anchored by the United States' enduring commitment to Israel's security," Obama continued.
Obama also said his administration would continue to work toward a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
"I look forward to continuing our efforts with Israel to achieve comprehensive peace and security in the region, including a two-state solution, and to working together to counter the forces that threaten Israel, the United States, and the world," he said.
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, meanwhile, sent a letter to President Shimon Peres calling for a resumption of peace talks with the Palestinians and the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.
Other world leaders including Britain's Queen Elizabeth, Russian President Dmitry Mevedev, German President Horst Koehler, the Netherlands' Queen Beatrix, Mexican President Felipe Calderon, Slovenian President Danilo Turk, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, East Timorese President José Ramos-Horta and Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf also sent greetings to Israel for Independence Day.
Turkish President Abdullah Gul also wrote to Peres, saying, "I would like to take this opportunity to repeat and confirm our desire to advance relations with Israel on a basis of mutual interests and by contributing to peace and stability in the Middle East."
On Sunday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the United States will continue to stand by Israel through its many challenges, adding that Washington was determined to reach a comprehensive Middle East peace agreement.
In a video message posted on the State Department website in honor of Israel's independence day, Clinton said, in a possible reference to remaining tensions over Iran's contentious nuclear program, that while "Israel today is confronting some of the greatest challenges in its history," its "promise and potential have never been greater."
"The United States will continue to stand with you, sharing your risks and helping shoulder your burdens, as we face the future together," the U.S. secretary of State added.
Clinton also stressed what she called her "deep personal commitment to Israel," one she claimed to have shared with President Obama, adding that Washington would "not waver in protecting Israel's security and promoting Israel's future."
"That is why pursuing peace and recognized borders for Israel is one of our top priorities," Clinton said, adding that she believed it was "possible - indeed necessary - to achieve a comprehensive peace in the Middle East that provides Israelis, Palestinians, and all the people of the region security, prosperity, and the opportunity to live up to their full God-given potential."
Meanwhile, Washington celebrated Israel's Independence Day early, at a ceremony that was to be held at the embassy itself and was moved to a distant location near the Capitol. The event, held last Thursday, was replete with kebabs and hummus.
Among the guests were Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's national security adviser Uzi Arad and envoy Michael Oren, along with other Israeli diplomats and academics, and American officials including Obama adviser David Axelrod and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, National Security Council member Dan Shapiro and AIPAC President Lee Rosenberg.

i greet israel's inependence,i .wish i had a travel to israel,my best regards to israeli people from iran.
the Americans have done more fighting for freedom n the Islamic world? really? maybe you don't understand the American empire, they do not fight for anyone's freedom not even their own, they fight for the one world order and the Islamic world doesn't want it, but if they use the guise as fighting for their freedom than do not be mistaken. for their freedom is not even freedom, they are just as much slaves as the rest of the world. freedom my arse, more like regime change and the regime changes will not be good for those people, it will only enslave them even more. you should really study more about the politics of the Zionists instead of doing as you're told.
Dear You, Let me just tell you that I shall personnally consider that the hatchet of the war opposing Israelis and Palestinians will only be buried when Israelis and Palestinians, at the occasion of their mutual Independence Day, start singing together their national anthems, the Israeli national anthem and the Palestinian national anthem. And let me cry out in advance to both of you, the Israeli people and the Palestinian people, these little words of hope : Yes, you can...! Yes, you will...! Antoine GED
Dear Utagawa, Thank you for your reply. You mention Saudi Arabia and Egypt which are both nation states, not citizens. When I talk about the global citizenry, I mean the people not their governments. There is a difference. In both these states, the governments are supported in power by the US, so I am pleased to see your criticism of them, and therefore of the US as well. Thank you. As for China, it is a nation state which like the US believes that power is right. This is Machiavellian. It has nothing to do with idealism, in fact the opposite. It is about retaining power by any means ? clearly not democratic. As for suicide bombers, even under Hobbes, all contracts are off if you threaten someone?s life. Assymmetric warfare is the response of the oppressed to the murder of their people by governments ? in the cases you give as examples, the US and their proxies. I will remind you too of UN Resolution 2649, passed by the UN General Assembly which states to the effect that those under colonial or alien subjugation can use ?whatever means at their disposal? to free themselves. It could not be clearer, suicide bombing is legitimate. Regards
"Minutes after David Ben-Gurion declared Israel's independence, realizing the dream of a state for the Jewish people in their historic homeland, the United States became the first country to recognize Israel," Obama said. The first country to recognize Israel was Uruguay.
Who said these unforgettable words: "I NEVER HAD SEX WITH THAT WOMAN" !?
It's a shame the rest of the world's hatred prevents them from seeing this.
What, no well wishes from Iran?????
# 27 sameer frm.n.delhi. Your name sounds Muslim. Anyhow you should look into your own affairs: The Kashmere problem hasn't yet been solved. It's over 63 years,& till today the (Moslems: Pakistanis & Indians shed blood over its territory) Pakistan once comprised of both the western part & the eastern part, till W.Pakistan started to subjugate eastern Pakistan,& as a result of that E. Pak.broke away & formed what is now called Bangladesh. Bloodshed & endless strife & wars has been raging ever since India's Independence. Only recently, with the connivance of Pakistan, its terrorists caused havoc in Mumbay killing & maiming scores of people. And you come here with your rubbish !?
A chameleon`s tongue talks!!
Keep loving and working with Israel towards your "shared goals of freedom and PEACE". Your next war for this rogue state wont even be financed by China.
Howdy Cynic; No border between Israel and the West Bank has ever been established. The Green Line was a temporary armistice line established on 4/3/49 "without prejudice to future territorial settlements or boundary lines or to claims of either Party relating thereto" which only lasted until 6/5/67. If you're looking for a "peace line", then the path of the security barrier is closer to it than the old Green Line used to be.
Advancing global jihad's march to world conquest and Jewish annihilation, racist US/EU rabid Jew-haters are eager to destroy Jewish lives- force into poverty and ruthlessly render hundreds of thousands of Jews homeless from Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem to duplicate the terrorist success of Gaza. As a result of Jewish land surrenders, every Israeli is under missile threat from either Hizbullah or Hamas, or both. The 'peace' process the US/EU adore.
You make a good point. But I should also remind you that prior to 1967, there were no Arab groups hellbent on attacking in the U.S. The assassination of Robert Kennedy is considered to be the first act of Arab terror against the U.S. and Sirhan Sirhan was a Christian.
Good, Mrs. Mrs. Clinton, that you congratulate this unique nation so precious to many around the world! Yet while you congratulate Israel, your eyes are not at all focussing on those you address, but on a text somewhere fixed above. Very strange - for me almost symbolic, this discrepancy. Is not Israel a people made of flesh and blood - created and loved by the true God and deserving a real, thankful look by all of us from the nations?
Moshe, what dream land are you living in? I was in Israel before the elections. In a three way ballot between Mccain, Clinton and Obama. Obama was dead last voted by Israelis. Israel got so used to Bush and the pandering they recieved by him that they haven't been able to tell the difference between a friend who is trying to help Israel and an enemy.
Are you referring to the idealism of suicide bombers in Israel, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc.? The kind of idealism that will get you 72 virgins? Or are you referring to the kind of idealism they have in Saudi Arabia which is ideally a place where women should just shut up and not be seen? Or the idealism of Egypt that locks away its dissenters? Or the idealism of Morocco with its ideal of stealing the former Western Sahara from its Sahari population? Or the idealism of the Chinese who have the ideal that Tibet is part of China? In your view of idealism, it seems only the US and Israel have coercive regimes while the rest of the world carries on in ideally democratic fashion. Your type of idealism is far from ideal Nick. "or the Lockean view as pursued by the idealism of the global citizenry."
Dear Compatriot Whenever I start beeing modarate about the Middle East conflict I have to read comments like the one from you to take a toughter standpoint again. People with such an offensive approach vs Jews and Israel are the best cause to be tough and tougher. Even if the jewish people would disapear you would continue to be an antisemite. We need people like Dino to realize, that there is no room for negotions. Giving in will lead to further requests.
As per the suspected shipment of Scud missiles to Hezbollah: It is more likely that there is no peace to be sought, but enemies to be vanquished.
I take it your translation is on behalf of the "World" which you so readily represent. Strange though since I thought all these countries, Russia, USA, UK etc..were part of the World. Who is the "World" then Dino? Switzerland???
A a direct result of Netanyahu's mismanagement, US-Israel relations have not been so bad since the days of Bush 1/Baker and are perhaps even worse. Obama is correct that friendship can only get stronger becuase they have sunk so low that there's no place to sink further. Here's hoping that as Israel celebrates 62 years of independence it boots Bibi and his gang of thugs.
Will you get? Appearantly not. Israel has two options: end Israel or end teh occupation. It is running out of time regarding making the choice. If Israel did not make it others will. It will be ugly ! Then; blame no one but your sleves. The Middle East will survive after a mutual destruction between Iran (lets say) and Israel. Israel will not. Save Israel = end the occupation.
You must be joking ,man. Remember the the partition of Palestine, 55% to the Jews and 44% to the Arabs and that Jerusalem will be internationalized by trutee United Nations. Well, how much is todays Israel? Serge, Sure that you do NOT know about this, It is 78%. Surprise? so you should be. So who give who more??, Eh, SERGI. yes it is the Palestinians who gave 22% of their RIGHTFUL SHARE, because TODAY all they want is this miserable 22%, which is being stolen everyday by the settlers movements.
OK Hillary, exactly what do you mean by "recognized borders?"? The obsolete ceasefire line of 1949 with Jordan or the path of the security barrier? What about East Jerusalem and the Temple Mount?
You Israelis slay me (well don't, please I enjoy life and stuff). Getting congrats on the day you conquered Palestine from mainly European and neo-European societies is not the world. Most of the world finds Zionist as lovely as they do Nazis and Wahhabis...in other words, hope Israel does dissolve and becomes a single democratic state.
...how dependent we are on the United States! Can't Haaretz find something 'independent' about Israel to lead the headline with? We aren't a vassal state, we're independent! Or...gulp...is Cipora right? Are we totally dependent upon the United States propping us up? Now I know why she's always crowing about how Obama needs to recognize our needs. Without him we aren't really an independent state at all... Come guys, stand up for yourselves. Go get your program and tell us how it's really going to work without relying on Big Daddy Warbucks.
Obama, If Obama means what he says, then he's made a semi-circle & come to the conclusion that Israel is like a bulwark against unbridled terror Islami raging all over the world. Today: The USA & Israel are standing shoulder to shoulder pushing the waves of terror that threatens to engulf the entire world.
Empty words Obama and Hilary! It's your actions of appeasment that have real meaning. It's your actions that give the modern day Hitlers hope of success. They know that you're weak and unwilling to stand up to oppression. Obama, haven't you read any history books? Look into the mirror and you'll see chamberlain staring back at you - reincarnated!
Obama has single-handedly caused the relationship with Israel to reach its lowest point in 50 years. He panders to the Arabs, and has greater sympathy with the third world than with western-style democracies. He has broken US promises to Israel, and has caused Israelis to no longer trust him (note that a majority of Israelis were happy to see him elected, but have since been sorely disappointed).
Thank you president obama !
For years US president Clinton. Bush and now Obama have broken US law and not followed congressional orders to move the US embassy to Israel's capital Jerusalem. The site has already broke ground but construction has been held up by Presidential order which is continuously extended. Please follow the law and move the embassy if the US loves Israel so much.
Better relations with the muslim world is also one of Obama's priorities. to achieve this he will press Israel into giving more to the palestinians.
Obama needs to keep up the pressure on Netanyahu or else in a few more decades the Zionist dream will be over I'm sorry to say
Israel and the US have very different goals. Obama's gracious comments on Israel's independence day don't change that.
You seem to forget history. You've tried that and failed.
Since 1967 Jews are again able to worship at our holy places and we live in Jerusalem. You should log on to e-bay. The kleenexes are much cheaper there.
They forced the UK,France and Israel out of Sinai. They did not do major arms deals with Israel They did not try to break Nassers blockade despite indicating they would. The US announced it was neutral in word thought and deed when the six day war, predictably, broke out How many Arab states were pro US ? the USA sent its army to get Sadaam out of the Gulf. In return the Saudis have kicked them out. the majority of the 9/11 terrorists were Saudis and terror funds came friom the Gulf. Helping free Afghanistan got the US what? What does the 4th Geneva convention say about returning after being forcibly expelled by the Arabs in 1948?
Israel Looks like week and old, she could not stay long with occupation policy. israel go back to 67 boarders to exist your self now or later you should do with or without willingly.
Thanks Hillary.
Afghanistan limbo, Iraq withdrawal, healthcare overhaul, wall street regulations, november election, Iran pendulum, .........,Israel
President Obama's recognition that "Israel remains our important partner and key strategic ally" and that the United States and Israel have a "special relationship," will help in moving forward with mutual interests and trust in the future. Peace and security are much desired by the people of Israel. These double goals can be accomplished only when all parties have the same goals and in the framework of mutual friendship and respect.
If America's ties with Israel are to strengthen, then the US will have little in common with the rest of the free world. We will have to forge our destiny without them. However, they will not be content with playing bit parts and will sabotage efforts to establish a truly cooperative global democracy. They want a coercive regime that they can control. This is the new struggle: the fight between the Hobbesian view of politics as epitomised by the US and Israel, or the Lockean view as pursued by the idealism of the global citizenry. There can only be one winner. It must be the people, not Leviathan.
Grow up Israel. Start acting like a Mensch!
Be quiet, save your rants for a different website. I may not be Israeli (yet), but I applaud President Obama on his warm message to Israel. We know you are a friend to the Jewish people, and you're doing a great job. Happy birthday Israel!!
Bunch of hyprocates...I rather them not say anything but act in favor of Israel which they are not doing
....but because I'm doing so, I will have to hurt you a little bit (East-Jerusalem + Co.) in the future. Believe me, it will be a hurting for your own good....
the islamic world needs to stop obsessing about israel. it needs to start thinking about the future of its children which is bleak. the islamic world needs a renaissance. it needs democracy and equality for its citizens. the americans owe nothing whatever to the islamic world. americans have done more fighting for freedom in the islamic world then muslims have ever done. get your house in order before you lecture others.
Obama talks about a two state solution, but when he's not openly criticized the Israel occupation and settlements as a violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention, then his agenda is open to question. If the US ever wants a rapport with the Islamic world, then it better rethink on its relationship with Israel, and the way it uses its veto to justify the Israeli occupation and settlements.
What does standing by Israel mean..arming all of Israels enemies and then trying to divide Jerusalem and the rest of the country.I wouldn't stand by her in a lightning storm.
The United States Government needs to realize that Israel is under the protection of the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob (the only God) and we are advocating that the Jews give up the land that God gave to the Jews. These so-called Palestinians (Arabs really) do not and will never own the land that the Jews own. God's Word, the Holy Bible is quite clear: "For behold, in those days and at that time, When I restore the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem, I will gather all the nations And bring them down to the valley of Jehoshaphat Then I will enter into judgment with them there On behalf of My people and My inheritance, Israel, Whom they have scattered among the nations; And they have divided up My land." Joel 3 verses 1-2 "Scripture taken from the NEW AMERICAN STANDARD BIBLE®, Copyright © 1960,1962,1963,1968,1971,1972,1973,1975,1977,1995 by The Lockman Foundation. Used by permission."
What side of mouth is she talking from. She is going after the Jewish vote
WE LOVE YOU.
Israel has ignored American requests to freeze building in east Jerusalem. That is not a challenge to Israel. That is a challenge to America. If the American leadership ever decides to lead, then the first step will be to stop being shoved around by Israel.
Damn !
I would not believe a word Hillary Clinton says. This is the same woman, when running for Senator in the State of New York, spoke before several orthodox and conservative Jewish groups and proclaimed the first thing she would do once elected to Congress would be to push a bill to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. As soon as she won the election she immediately stated the status of Jerusalem is up to final status negotiations and she would not get involved. Her proclaimations about American support for Israel are empty and without any semblance of reality. America, under Obama, is proving to be a country that cannot honor promises and committments made to its allies, and instead believes that terrorists and murderers can and should be negotiated with. I made the mistake of voting for Obama and after his treatment of Israel and Netanyahu it's a mistake I and my fellow Jewish Democrats will not make again.
Dear Mrs. Clinton, If you believe what you say about Israel, yet continue a two state solution path, then I'd say the Obama God through which this plan has not been ordained shall bring a disastrous consequence to all parties concerned.Trust in the One True God and turnaway from a plan ill conceived and when signed through extortion measures. No prayer or prayers will help you and those who hatched it long ago.
I MUST SAY I WAS TOUCHED BY THIS VIDEO!
Oh well, I guess he's attending services at the synagogue where his wife's cousin is the rabbi.
So get back to your detestation of what we are and what you will never be: proud, independent, unslaved and fighting for our rights.
she is keen to please obama so she can keep her job.
What a joke!
