Winograd Committee to release interim report on Monday

Report to be released first to PM and Peretz and include evaluation of gov't decisions before, during Lebanon war.

By Nir Hasson

The Winograd Committee investigating the handling of the Second Lebanon War announced Wednesday it will release its interim report Monday at 4 P.M. to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Amir Peretz.

A press conference will be held an hour later, and the main points of the report released to the public.

The committee also said it would simultaneously release the entire report during the press conference on its Web site.

The interim report covers the entire period between the IDF withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000, and until July 17, 2006, five days after the Second Lebanon War broke out.

The committee announced in March that the interim report would include a severe evaluation of the functioning of the government and the Israel Defense Forces during the war, and an analysis of the period before the war.

The period to be included in the report will span the withdrawal from south Lebanon in 2000 until the war itself, including general conclusions and analysis of the decision-making process during the withdrawal and until Olmert's Knesset speech on July 17, 2006, five days after the start of the war.

The committee also said that the analysis of the decisions made during this period will include specific findings, recommendations and conclusions regarding the general functioning of the army, and personal findings regarding the decisions made by the prime minister, defense minister, and former IDF chief of staff Dan Halutz to go to war.

"The PM and his Defense Minister, whose Leadership Command was wavering....irresolute..... changable.... inexperienced.... and lacking in war-time expertise." Well, given the circumstances - a war that shouldn't have been fought, was planned as a 4 or 5 day limited excursion and was expanded under military pressure into something more - until the US and UN put a stop to it! I think Olmert did as good a job as could be done.

About time after all the tricks to stop getting rid of the cowards olmert and peretz whom have brought shame into the IDF and the country.Unfortunately this will be the censored version and blame will be passed onto others in the attempt to lie to the nation.

It will be an interesting Report and the findings may be more damaging than one might imagine especially for the PM and his Defense Minister, whose Leadership Command at such important moments as 'War-time' were, to say the least, wavering....irresolute..... changable.... inexperienced.... and lacking in war-time expertise. Unfortunately such weaknesses as these have had a devastating effect on the spirit of the Country ever since and the sooner this Cabinet is relieved of its duties, the better and safer the State will be.
