Wiesel: If Ahmadinejad were assassinated, I wouldn't shed a tear

Nobel winner Elie Wiesel gathers signatures from 50 other winners for petition denouncing Iran leader.

By Haaretz Service Tags: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Iran Israel news

Nobel Prize laureate Elie Wiesel said on Tuesday that if Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad were assassinated, he would not shed a tear.

"Ahmadinejad is a danger to the world and pathologically sick," Wiesel said during an interview on Army Radio. "He is dangerous because he openly wants to destroy Israel, meaning, to destroy another six million Jews."

Over the last few weeks, Wiesel has gathered signatures from more than 50 Nobel laureates across the world for a petition denouncing Ahmadinejad. The petition will be published in The New York Times and The International Herald Tribune.

The letter condemns Iran's severe human rights violations and warns that Iran's nuclear program is a danger to humanity. The petition is part of Wiesel's worldwide campaign to raise awareness of the threat he says Ahmadinejad poses to world peace.

When asked whether any Muslims had volunteered their signature, Wiesel said: "There aren't many Muslim Nobel winners, but the one that I do know signed it."

"We all know that Ahmadinejad - an open anti-Semite and the world's biggest Holocaust denier - intends to destroy Israel and bring disaster to the entire world," Wiesel told Army Radio commentator Razi Barkai.

Wiesel told Haaretz last week that he was using his ties with world leaders and heads of state and appearing at international conferences to warn of Ahmadinejad's intentions.

"Governments must stop Ahmadinejad and put him on trial at the International Court of Justice in The Hague on charges of open incitement for genocide," he said.

Wiesel blasted Judge Richard Goldstone, saying his report on the Israeli offensive in Gaza was "a crime against the Jewish people."

"One thing is clear, that document was unnecessary, and that man [Goldstone] who has a good reputation, who I have known for many years, should have declined the offer to head the committee, because of the anti-Israel mandate which called for it's establishment," Wiesel said.

Wiesel, who was deported from his hometown of Sighet in Transylvania to Auschwitz, is demanding Hungary open its Nazi-occupation era archives. This would expose the extent of the Hungarian police and army's persecution of the Jews, he said.

... supports and encourages the Iraqi war with already more than a million causality. Now he wants to push a war against Iran and assassination of its elected president. He supports all Israeli wars and trashes one of the most respected and honored judges in the world, who happened to be a Jew, because of a factual report of Gaza assault. Mr. Wiesel, slow down, you need to leave some credibility to the times when you want to call for the destruction of other countries around this region.

What is a "real humanitarian?" One who cares for all people regardless of their race, color, or religion. He has never spoken out to criticize Israel, a racist state who commits crimes against humanity as though it has the right to do so. Where is Wiesel? The "great humanitarian." For Weisel, humans are only confined to certain people. Does that sound familiar Mr. Wiesel?

Wiesel does not even shed a tear for the crimes carried out against the Palestinian people, for no one, not even the innocent children. He sheds no tears for the oppressed people. He has no condemnations or criticisms. He think that Israel has the devine right to do as it pleases. Shame on him for his hypocrisy. it is even ignorant for him to make such a statement regarding someone being assassinated. I am sure there are many people who would love to see some of Israel's leaders assassinated as well, but if anyone well=known should publicly say so, it would be considered an outrage, and Mr. Weisel would be the first to cry "anti-semitism."! Would not assassinating one's oppressors be more logical Mr. Wiesel than assassinating Ahmadinejad? So then why are oppressed Palestinians labeled as "terrorists."?

The opposition to the 'election' of Ahmadinejad has been a BIG problem to the Supreme Leader and his regime. It has destroyed the credibility of the Ahmadinejad government. It is a fact that TWICE the Ahmadinejad government has accepted the IAEA plan to enrich Uranium and manufacture fuel for the Tehran Research Reactor. Twice it has been overruled by the Ayatollahs. The assassination of Ahmadinejad would be a gift to the Supreme Leader and his Junta.

No proof whatsoever that there was blatant targeting of civilian population. Indeed, the opposite is true. The evidence is that Israelies fired at Hamas operatives that were using the civilians as shields. And let me tell you something else about Wiesel. If he thought for a mini-second that there was any truth to Goldstone's and your accusations, his barbs would be aimed at the murderers. He doesn't believe it because there is zero evidence of it. In terms of firing into an area where there was a likelihood of civilians, a very different matter and one permitted by international law when an offensive force is attacking one's people, that is an entirely different matter. I should hope the Israelies did that. Israel has not obligation to sacrifice its civilians with a view to protecting Pal civilians. In any event, none of this will help you good old Gearoid. The Israelies will continue to defend themselves and will continue to shoot at terrorists shooting at Israelies, no matter what.

Such balance, but Elie's point is simple. Goldstone's commission would never stand up to the scrutiny of the domestic law of any common law jurisdiction, including yours. Ireland's law would not tolerate a commission that is struck up to target the party that it is asked to investigate. That was Goldstone's mandate, given to him by parties who can't stand Israel defending herself. And what you call evil, again is a simple attack on Israeli self defence. Goldstone as the Israeli response persuasively evidences was way off base.

That kind of silly quips may get guffawas in your community or knowing nods but they are all empty headed. What exactly has Weisel done to hurt others? He really is a metaphor of Israel. Blame the victim who seeks to defend him or herself. Little Mr. A of Iran is not only a danger to the world but he is an oppressor of his own people. Isn't that enough to cut your support? And that characterization of little Mr. A is not just an Israeli characterization but one which transcends the bulk of national boundaries.

    • 04:14

but we should be honest about the real issue. Ahmadinejad makes colorful proclamations, like Bush with his Axis of Evil, but much of it is grandstanding furthered by the deliberate misinterpretations by his critics. Iran wants power and influence. Exterminating Israel (with its 200 nukes) is not on the table. The real worry for the US and Israel is that an unfriendly power of 70 million people is on the rise. Even if Mr. Beady Eyes is toppled (and he should be) and hanged for his offenses against the people (as he should be), Iran will still want to be a regional power, and will likely still pursue a nuclear program. I KNOW that Wiesel is intelligent enough to understand the nuance here. I KNOW Wiesel knows that Iran doesn't want to lob at Israel, but DOES want to become a regional power. But Wiesel knows nuance won't sell.

Eli Wiesel got the Nobel Peace Prize 1986"for his exceptional efforts and fights against supression and dehumilation of mankind of all races". When Wiesel was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986, the Norwegian Nobel Committee called him a "messenger to mankind," noting that through his struggle to come to terms with "his own personal experience of total humiliation and of the utter contempt for humanity shown in Hitler's death camps," as well as his "practical work in the cause of peace," Wiesel had delivered a powerful message "of peace, atonement and human dignity" to humanity." I am just aking myself, why this "human thinking" did not apply for the massacre of Palestinian kids and women in Gaza, last year? We have now 2 examples how the Norwegian NObel Prize Committee was ways away from reality. One with Eli Weasel 24 years ago, and another with Barack Obama, just one month back. Nobel himself would be chocked, if he knew who got his Peace Prize already!

Eli Wiesel and most other unbiased men of honour know this and say it as it is..of course, soon enough, you'll have the regular haaretz gang here ..durson, labrhas, lincoln, silvienne, dutch, sam soul, etc..to tell us how fine a man ahmedinejad is and how it's israel that's the problem....yatta yatta... to #9, the nobel prize was made cheap a long time ago when they gave it to arafat.

Of course killing just one person at the top will not stop the problem, nor even slow it. So... we kill Ahmedinajad. then of course we will have to kill his inner circle. Their advisers have to be walked out too. And we'll need to identify major leaders in the community who support ant-Israel sentiment and liquidate them, as well as local politicians and sympathizers who might become a problem. Then we can teach them how civilized people should behave.

In essence calls for the assassination of a world leader. Perhaps he should focus on recovering some of the money he lost on Madoff rather than letting us all know who he believes should live and die.

How do people who talk of death to others get a Nobe "Peace" Prize. Mr Weesel, I watched a TV documentary about how 3000 Jews live very happily in the city of Shiraz in Iran. They are very prosperous, unlike the Palestinians in Israel and occupied Palestine.

This man urges further investigation of the barbarity of the Nazis - and then castigates Goldstone for daring to investigate IDF war crimes. Is he serious?? The Holocaust was absolutely disgusting and the nazis were vile, evil people. But that does not exonerate Israel from its blatant targeting of civilian populations.

He did win a Nobel prize for literature. Ahmedinejad will win one for killing off dissnters in Iran & the violent ppromtion of Islamic Theocracy. Yes Ahmadinejad is a Shi'te I've always thought it Meshaal will also win for contributing to the number of martyrs deflowering virgins (70 I believe per male) Hamas will win them for improving the lives of ordinary Palestinains in Gaza - resistance & violence has helped the lives of ordinary Palestinians oh so much. Nasrallah will win for the remake of the beach boys song: 4 wives for every guy. Given that Nobel was involved in Dynamite then perhaps more Nobel prizes ought to be conferrerd on Islamic Jihad & The Good Colonel of Libya.

"Nobel Prize winner Elie Wiesel said on Tuesday that if Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad were assassinated, he would not shed a tear." "Wiesel said "there aren't many Muslim Nobel winners, but the one that I know signed it." "Wiesel blasted Judge Richard Goldstone, saying his report on the Israeli offensive in Gaza was "a crime against the Jewish people." What's the point of lisetning to Eli Wiesel, when I've already heard it all from Bibi or Lieberman.
