West Bank security curfew extended until Tuesday
Restrictions on Palestinian travel to East Jerusalem to continue amid fears of more violence.
By Haaretz Service Tags: Ehud Barak Israel news West Bank PalestiniansDefense Minister Ehud Barak on Saturday evening signed an order to extend a security lockdown in the West Bank to prevent Palestinians entering Jerusalem after a weekend of protests and rioting in the city.
Barak's decision to continue the closure until midnight on Tuesday followed intelligence indicating the likelihood of disturbances, officials said.
There were fears that plans to inaugurate a new synagogue in Jerusalem's Old City on Sunday could lead to more violence.
Security forces were also preparing for further protests across the West Bank in response to an Israeli decision announced last week to build 1,600 new Jewish homes in East Jerusalem - a move which drew widespread condemnation, including from Israel's staunch ally, the United States.
Earlier on Saturday police used tear gas and stun grenades in clashes with dozens of Palestinians at a checkpoint between the West Bank and Jerusalem, while four Palestinians were arrested amid mounting tensions in the holy city.
Two minors were also arrested after attacks on police later in the day.
On Friday police arrested four Palestinians during at times violent skirmishes around the Al-Aqsa mosque, while in East Jerusalem's Sheikh Jarrakh neighborhood police arrested eight leftwing activists demonstrating against Jewish construction there.
Police are expected to deploy in numbers across the Old City and Jerusalem's Arab neighborhoods on Sunday and access to the Al-Aqsa mosque will be barred to men under the age of 50.

It is sad that you look at all palestinans as a threat and that they should face more checkoints. I don,t think that there is any place for more checkpoints anyway Jackie. To move from Ramalla to Nablus , it ,most of the time, takes you about six to eight hours; that is, you take your plane from Miami and chances are that you arrive into Paris almost before a palestinian can cross a forty kilometers or less on the WB and still you call for more checkpoints!!!! HAVE A NICE AND PEACEFULL PASSOVER Jackie.
With the arrival of Passover on March 29th, and the usual spate of attacks by Arabs o Jews during any of our Holy Days, is it not advisable to reinstall checkpoints throughout Samaria and Judea. At least install them until after the holiday is over. Then reinstate them for Shavuot. I plan to be in Israel during at least one of those holidays and would prefer not to face the rain of stones and filfth from the Temple Mount to which I was subject when I was at the Kotel during Sukkot.
Man, you are full of hate (ODIO). Please visit a medical doctor and review your spiritual state of mind. You hope to jail ALL PALESTINIANS A 1000 YEARS PLUS !!! It is outrageous to say the least.
Peace and worship? They don't belong together when used in the context of Palestinian youths who supposedly intende to "worship" at the Al Aqsa Mosque on the Jewish Temple Mount. There is something important present in the continued repetitive actions of the necessity of imposing access restrictions to those under the age of 50, who are supposedly going to "worship" at the mosque. It appears that the Palestinian "youths" always have something up their sleaves and on their collective, violent, trashy little minds...and it's never the idea of "worship", but rather something entirely different. Ahhh...the wisdom of age. If they live that long, they may yet grow up, mature, and learn something about life and co-existence. That's yet to be seen, in the meantime remember..."He who lives by the sword shall die by the sword". Someone great said that, I wonder who it might be?
On tuesday, it is rumoured, not only will a new synagogue be opened in the Arab Quarter - but fundamentilst Jews will invade the Haram el Sharif to lay down a large stone, indicating the start of construction of the Third Temple. While Jewish settlers are allowed the "Right of Return" to Sheikh Jarrah... Mr. Obama - the Third Intifada is coming, if nothing is done to stop these people...
Palestinians in the West Bank will soon be prisoners just like those in Gaza.
rock throwing machines Shoot back rocks at rock throwers.
I understand 1 to mean the opposite of what he wrote. Something, as 5 says, has got to give. Sealing borders, fomenting pressure cooker conditions for people already hampered in countless ways in their daily life by the Israeli occupation, is courting disaster.
Logic says: Open city for all.
Something got give no freedom no peace
Israel deals with Palestinians in West Bank and Gaza Strip as Prisoners in a big jail. That is why I believe no peace can be achieved; just and fir peace. The only way to achieve peace if any possibilty is there, is to go for Binational State. I, in fact, blame Abu Mazen and his assistants why they don't talk about thsi alternative. I believe two more Netenyahus in Israel, will help get Israel Vanished.
in "territory occupied" BIZARRE!!!!
STOP buildong in Gaza, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Syria and everywhere else. And all their Allies who are also complaining should also stop building, they know who they are.
to create more militants in the future.
The Palestinian demographic bomb will have already exploded. Iran and some Arab nations will have nuclear weapon capabilities, and Arab Europeans will hold leadership positions in the EU. Should be intersting. Hope I'm around to see it :-)
as always these useless leeches on society harming israel... THANK YOU!!!
Israel never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity for peace to prosper. Ever since these talks were proposed, Israel has done everything it could to incite a response from the Palestinians from assassinating their leaders, declaring heritage sites and announcing more settlements and now extending the lock-down during Mitchell's arrival as if to ensure talks will not occur. It will be interesting to see if similar lock-downs will be used to prevent rock trowing Haredi Jews from rioting over a parking lot or other business being open the Sabbath to see if that policy only applied against non-Jews.
When will the Jewish people of Israel wake up and start protesting their goverments policies towards Palestinians. It can't be that the Jewish community, having been so vocal against the privilege whites were receiving in America to the detriment of blacks, are now silent in Israel's privilege towards Jews, to the detriment of Arabs. Where are the real Jews?
I hope Israel restrict all palestinian for 1000 years plus
