WATCH: 'War criminal' cat-calls interrupt Olmert Chicago speech

Audience members name Palestinians killed in Gaza as ex-Israeli prime minister addresses University of Chicago.

By Haaretz Service Tags: Ehud Olmert Israel news Gaza

The world is continuing to voice its criticism of Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip last winter. A recent online video shows former Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert faced with calls of "war criminal" and "murderer" during a speech at the University of Chicago on Thursday.

"War crimes are not free expression," yelled one audience member, and was escorted out of the building by security. Another protester waved around a document containing the names of the Palestinians killed during the Gaza offensive.

The 7-minute video was posted on the internet by the "Electronic Intifada," a news service which reports on the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict from a Palestinian perspective.

Olmert came to the campus of the University of Kentucky last week as part of this tour. He was faced with dozens of protesters who were thrown out of the lecture hall. When asked a question of Israel's nuclear arsenal, he replied, "How can we use weapons that we have never admitted to having (wink wink)" followed by laughs by the audience. Absolutely hilarious!

Everyone seems to forget that Egypt ALSO has a Gaza border, making the screams of "Israel's Gaza siege" and "Israel's Gaza prison" total lies. Not only does Egypt keep Gazan Arabs locked out for years, but Egypt also FORCED BACK thousands of Gazans who breached its border to run for their lives from Israel's counter attack to 8 years of missiles. Egypt locks Gazans out while letting weapons flow in from its side. Israel saved and absorbed a million Jewish refugees KICKED from surrounding states including Egypt - while Egypt keeps Gazans out and other Arab states keep brother Arabs in refugee camps to this day. Hamas AND Egypt are the insanely cruel ones in this war. Of course oil-moneyed Islamification does its best to deny and hide the horrific cruelty. Chicago is clearly no match for the big oil money lies. Goodbye to sanity there. Protest Egypt's Gaza siege NOW!

It is amazing to read your responses after what the whole world has to put up with because of Muslim terrorists. Yet you support them. Israel has a right to protect itself more then the US and its allies have a right to be in Iraq Pakistan or Afghanistan. Israel's enemies are withing arms reach, bombarding Israeli cities with thousands of rockets, if not for the security fence there would be many suicide bombing as before. Has any one bought a airplane ticket since 2001, have do you realize how much you are paying for added security because of the terrorists? Hundreds of billions of dollars are being spent needlessly because of the wonderful people you are protecting.

Operation cast lead was not a war, it was an assault against a densely packed enclosed civilian area, and the morality should be judged with similar incidences , perhaps with the Germans against the Warsaw ghetto uprising because the scale of reprisals and the huge imbalance between armaments, the "sitting ducks" situation are much more similar than any war I can think of. anyway, add New Zealand to your list of moral armies that you must compare yourself with, because our army would - and has - court-marshalled soldiers for deliberately targeting civilians.

    • 19.10.09
    • 00:53

Jew-haters are vehemently opposed to Jews defending themselves against thousands of rocket attacks against Israeli towns, hospitals, clinics, schools & kindergartens. In a military response several years overdue, Israel warned Gaza civilians via loudspeakers; thousands of leaflets & 200,000 phone calls urging evacuation of battle areas. The IDF aborted missile strikes to prevent civilian casualties, opened a field clinic for Muslims on Gaza border. Continually provided tons of humanitarian aid whilst Hamas waged WAR against innocent Israeli civilians. The Islamo Fascists commit war crimes: they use human shields; hide behind women and children; wage war from densely populated areas, store and fire rockets from residential buildings, schools, hospitals & mosques to deliberately MAXIMISE Arab injuries & deaths so that when Israel fires back in self defense & accidentally kills civilians, Islamics scream to the world, but the blood of the Arabs is on the heads of the Islamo Fascists.

But in most cases the people that committed those atrocities didn't become prime ministers and hailed as heroes in their country. The same holds true for Yitzhak Shamir and Menachem Begin. If you want to compare yourself to dictatorships go ahead - I prefer to compare Israel to democratic western nations. As for the morality of an army involved in active warfare - it is the very act of a 40 year long oppression that is immoral. What Israel is doing is simply not a war. Ass for "light unto the nations" - that is what the founding vision for Israel proclaimed. The result falls well below the expectations - which is not surprising given the displacement of another population as a requirement for its founding.

In the view of most reasonable people the killing of 1,400 people, most of them uninvolved civilians and the wholesale destruction of infrastructure, is a criminal act. Its that simple. Yet Israeli society has become so hard-hearted that only a handful of decent people are upset by the murderous actions of their leaders. Any objective legal view however, is that it is a war crime. Fact.

As for 1953 Qibya Massacre I think that still IDF still may be compared agains leading Western armies back then. However during the war of independence both sides committed atrocities as well as other nations in the world.

What Western standard of expectation is that? Abu Ghraib? Camp Bread Basket?Darul Dhyafa? In the Darul Dhyafa case the British government argued that the Human Rights Act did not apply so there should be no independent inquiry. Is that the standard of expecation? And if by "attention" you mean with regard to international law, there is in fact "a highly selective enforcement of the UN's human rights policy" (Habermas, Divided West, 2008, p. 29), but I have yet to see a serious argument that it is applied selectively toward those countries about which there is a higher Western standard of expectation, and don't expect to.

I agree that Hamas also committed war crimes. That may even be much more deplorable than what we did in Gaza (Lebanon too). But both are definitely illegal. Character and integrity cannot be defined by a lowest common denominator or re-defined to expediently justify our acts. For our own longevity, we must always take the moral high ground. We must always act legally. We must always protect the weak and minority in our country. We must always remember that we are a very small minority on the global scale. We must have the courage to always do the right thing, even when it is hard. We must never take the easy way out. After all, we pride ourselves on our justness, fairness, and democratic values. We must hold ourselves to these standards and not measure ourselves by Hamas?s standards. We are the great State of Israel and we ought to remember how we came about and must remain true to our ideals. We forget this only to our peril. Peace NOW!!

In an interview with Jewish Forward, Goldstone denied that his group had conducted ?an investigation.? Instead, it was what he called a ?fact-finding mission? based largely on the limited ?material we had.? Since this ?material? was cherry-picked by Hamas guides and spokesmen, Goldstone acknowledged that ?if this was a court of law, there would have been nothing proven.? He emphasized to the Forward that the report was no more than ?a road map? for real investigators and that it contained no actual ?evidence,? of wrongdoing by Israel. - Dershowitz This draft resolution saddens me as it includes only allegations against Israel," Goldstone told the Swiss /Le Temps/ newspaper on Friday. I guarantee that many of the people quietly sitting in the hall were getting an experience which pushed them a bit further towards understanding what the radical Islamic, radical Left alliance is really about. I am sure that a new few perceived the truth that this alliance is a danger not simply to Israel but to the United States and the Western world as a whole.

This is highy predictable behavior right now. This is encouraging these groups to act up. My World View of how things operate has changed over the past seven years. No matter how bad things get, do not allow ourselves to be plunged backwards into the sort of World where life has no value or meaning. Even these kids who are berating Olmert have lives that are important. The enemy is a sneak. The enemy can come from both within and without. The enemy is either rational from their own standpoint or are just working for somebody else. I don't completely trust anybody. I suppose I trust my mother the most. But you know this is a messed up World. People will do anything for money. Young People are usually the most sincere because they are idealistic. Let lawyers handle rep for Israel right now. It may be profitable for Olmert to speak but not good for Jews. Watch. I predict Jews will sell eachother and Israel out now, for a few sheckels. So predictable. I don't get paid to write. Remember!

The Palestinians have much more to worry about than Israel
    • Robert
    • 18.10.09
    • 04:07

The Palestinians should not forget one thing. The Goldstone report was based solely on testimony from their side. Israel was not represented, there was no defence of allegations made against it, and there was no supporting evidence as to the circumstances of any IDF attack. In spite of the above The Goldstone Report also condemned the Palestinian side. In the meantime Israel is investigating alleged injustices from it's side. Therefore it is the Palestinians who need to worry about all this. There is evidence that clearly indicates Palestinians using the cover of it's civilian population to attack Israel. This is a clear violation of International Law, not only that, but Palestinian Leaders planned and and directed such attacks. Of course their attacks were meant to hit civilians. All of this contradicts International Law. There is no doubt who is the guilty party in all this.

For those of you calling for Hamas to be treated the same. Hello, Hamas is already branded as a "terrorist organization" and their government is under sanctions for 3 years. While Israel's crimes continued to be called "self defence" Hamas officials would never have the chance to go to US to brag about killing innocent children like the Olmert did. I call for both Hamas and Israel to be treated the same where Israeli people are but under sanctions because their leaders are a bunch of war criminals. Israelis will have to dig tunnels to the US to get food and medicine.

What does casualty rate have to do with it? The difference in civilian casualties is because IDF did not bring their families with them. Hamas demanded that the battle be fought in their most crowded streets, hoping for this very outcome. The difference in military casualties is because IDF are good marksmen. Hamas is not.

Hamas council met and voted to start the war as they launched hundreds of rockets. For eight years Israelis were bombed and hamas called for clearing out sderot and ashkelon. For eight years Israel lost more than 12 or 13. Babies were maimed and lost in pregnancy. Hundreds were injured and eight years of living with rockets falling. Hamas was also aiming at chemical facilities which could have wiped out ten thousand.

Hamas did not kill 1400 people, the majority of them civilians. Hamas in fact had held up their part of the bargain, and had largely ceased rocket attacks in the months prior to the Israeli massacre in Gaza. Hamas did not shoot children at close range, and Hamas did not use civilians as human shields in door-to-door operations. Don't take my word for it, see Amnesty Intl, HRW, and other international sources...
