WATCH: Israeli satire's provocative promo that sparked Knesset outrage
Panel mull censorship over Eretz Nehederet; MK: Sketch of settlers abducting soldier 'anti-Semitic.'
By Matan Abramowitz, City Mouse Tags: Israel news anti-SemitismA promotional ad for Israel's top satirical show, featuring the actors writhing naked covered in paint and a sketch of West Bank settlers kidnapping an Israel Defense Forces soldier, sparked cries of anti-Semitism and pro-violence at a meeting of the Knesset Education Committee on Monday.
MK Ya'akov Katz, of the right-wing National Religious Party, said the promo for Eretz Nehederet [It's a Wonderful Country] reflected the sentiments of hatred exhibited toward Jews throughout history.
"When you see this program, you can understand how the Nazis slaughtered my grandfather, my uncles and my whole family in Poland," Katz declared. "This is anti-Semitic propaganda, anti-Jewish. It shows a complete loss of self-rule and self-control, exploiting the right of decent and cultured people for freedom of expression."
WATCH THE PROMO:
The panel discussion was called by Kadima MK Ronit Tirosh, who termed the promo a provocative "display of violence."
The promo has been derided by Israeli viewers since it aired two weeks ago to mark the opening of the satirical program's seventh season.
The Second Broadcasting Authority has transferred the slew of complaints it received following the airing to the Keshet media group, which under its auspices runs the main Israeli commercial television.
"Presentations like these make me wonder whether we do need some sort of censorship to set red lines," Tirosh told the panel, which convened Monday afternoon at the permission of committee chairman, MK Zevulun Orlev.
"This is not the first time we have discussed the influence various programs have on youth and on their behavior. This was a display of violence, invading the living rooms of every family just as their children were watching television," Tirosh added.
"Children must not be exposed to programs with explicit sexuality, which have no place on these prime time hours. The ball is now in the hands of knesset members, due to the inaction of the Second Authority," she said.
The panel discussion ended without any firm resolution, but debate on the matter seems far from over. According to Tirosh, if a decision is not reached on the matter, the Knesset must consider legislation to curb questionable programs.
In its response, the Second Authority said "regulation is not censorship," particularly according to "democratic laws."
"Restricting the freedom of expression is something that must be carried out with extreme caution and only in the cases when it is clear that it posits harm to the public without a doubt," it said.
The Authority said it found the program offensive "only in taste" adding that it had no reason to intervene directly.
Keshet, to whom the Authority transferred the complaints, responded by satire by saying: "Freedom of expression is the life force of a democratic regime."

Violent? Silly, yes. But violent? Why do we not hear Madame Tirosh et.al. in protests against the actual violence of reality shows like "Survival" and "Big Brother" which not only teach our youth how to make alliances and then betray them in order to succeed; how to back-bite and out-maneuver erstwhile allies in order to win; how the definition of success has become "the last man standing". All this can be found in our ever-so-popular 'entertainment' programs that push an agenda of crass social Darwinism which teaches all of us that in order to survive, everyone else must fail. Good lesson there Roniti! It's really lucky for us that we have you to protect us from seeing what is really violent and foul in our lives!!
The sexual part is in the brain of the adults watching, so don't if it disturbs you. And it's ok to witness haredi violence against our soldiers and police but not some people enjoying something voluntarily?!
..from the article how is this anti-semitic; and how does it relate to deceased family members in the holocaust? I'm educated and well-travel individual, but I get angry that "anything" a jew or israeli doesn't like the Knee-jerk response is its anti-semitic. This is where jews lose the support of others..Its' been going on all my life.
And let the open mind people live there lives
KATZ declared: "This is anti-Semitic propaganda, anti-Jewish. " This was done BY JEWS in a JEWISH country, on a JEWISH channel FOR a JEWISH audience. Where is the anti- Jewish? This anti- Jewish/ anti-semetic thing is getting BOOOOOOOOOOOOring!
For something so harmelss and silly the Knesset creates a panel, which only wastes more taxpayer money and Knesset time for discussing real pressing matters. When it comes to tackling haredi violence, extortion, blackmail, and subversion of the State- which they spit upon, does not apparently warrant a Knesset panel or public backlash?! What is the country coming to? Israel is facing a serious demographic threat, not just from the so called "Palestinian" Israelis, but especially from the Haredi sector, which is increasingly more violent, coercive, and vindictive than even the arab against the majority of the country!
When apologist for occupation and land theft have so little credibility that all they have left is to disparage others who do not share their hapless views by posing as the person they disagree with such as the "Yaakov Sullivan" of #13. Haaretz should really aspire to better monitoring of thesefrauds whose journalistic lack of integrity is almost as great as their ideological bankruptcy.
One should know Television is a commercial selling entity and do everything to bring up the viewers and always see what the majority wants they do jst to sell the commercials and commercials pays for what you like to watch on TV the solution is simple You don't like it ? change the Chanel .turn off your TV or through it out of the window I personally didn't like the clip... again I dont make rules
Such a pity they are actors - half the world's problems would be solved if they were the Cabinet.
to be quite provocative and appealing. I'm looking forward to others.
sexual abuse by predators. What kind of sick minds have we developed that it took me several viewing to catch on to the messsage that an orgy and debasement of the body is acceptable behavoir? Decades ago,it was explained that sexual predators show pornographic videos to children before they sexually abuse them in order to "educate" the children regarding the accaptability of the sexual abuse. This is not sophistication, satire, or art for average viewing-it's porn, using child finger paint for the wrong audience, both children and adults.
when God created them. Centuries later people became very modest, too modest and all body parts had to be covered. Come on folks, this is a form of artistic expression, no major private parts are shown here. What is happening to - secular - Israel? turning into a Taliban style country? I pray not.
of humour. Borat is striking back.
This is how effeminate Israeli men are portrayed. There is no word to describe how inane this waste of video time was. I'm very VERY sure that the average Israeli doesn't identify will this. Salaam/Shalom
Didn't king David dance naked before the ark of the covenant when it finally came to town? We are born naked and we die naked - perhaps a reality the fuddy duddies just can't cognate.
I saw the trailer and I must have missed something. Apparently some in the Knesset, and more than a few readers, have problems with artistic license, to say nothing about interpretation. Hey, MKs, try dealing with real problems.
Naked & Nakedness ! Half the Knesset is naked, while the other half applaud. And so the cycle goes on forever ! After the summer ressess. Those who were applauding are now naked,& the former applaud ! Actually, the Knesset without knowing it,solved the Physics theory of 'Perpetuam Mobile' which eluded scientists for ages !
Yeah, God is pleased that you do not have a TV. But he really is pissed off that you have the internet.
to be cute, in good taste, and quite appealing.
"Israeli TV is out of control. Swearing, nudity and predominantly leftist views on free-to-air and at times when children are watching." Foreign TV is much worse. They showed white phosphorous dropping on defenceless Gazans, while the whole world watched.
There's nothing of value on TV nowadays, and if I need to stay informed, I've got newspaper and internet. Keshet Broadcasting is apparently desperate to attract viewership because they've realized that there's nothing to watch these days. They figure that nudity, and other filth (in the guise of 'freedom of expression') will attract youth. Well, it's time to protest to the government and do everything possible to kick out the management at Keshet, who apparently have no sense of decency whatsoever.
Whats wrong in asking the tv channel to show the advert after 9.00pm?
Gilad wrote : "Israeli TV is out of control. Swearing, nudity and predominantly leftist views on free-to-air and at times when children are watching." I think we're touching the real problem here. The far right hated Eretz Nehederet way before they got naked for their promo. Beyond nudity, those MKs don't like the way this program makes fun of zionism and ridiculize the settlers. We're definitely dealing here with political censorship.
There has been horrible satirical material on Israel TV against the homosexual community for many years. This was undoubtedly the catalyst to the murder of 7 homosexual teens in TeL Avv last year by maniacal right wing settlers.
What you are so worried about is the human body. We all have one! Amazing! The only thing dirty or disgusting about a human body is if it is left to become decrepit by lack of exercise over eating and slovenliness. The beautiful form, its sexuality all these things are gifts of G-d. Your sense of humor is what is actually lacking. Were this the USA where prudes and right wing Christians rule, the station would get fined. Thank heaven we live in Israel where we are not so naive, prudish or absurd to think a naked human is something to shame.
Many Israelis like to reference what is shown in the US and what is tolerated. They like to use the US as the benchmark but what they don't realize is that there is clear separation in the US between what is permitted on cable/sat and what is permitted on free-to-air and also at what times. Israeli TV is out of control. Swearing, nudity and predominantly leftist views on free-to-air and at times when children are watching. Something has got to be done.
this Katz is a joke. In hebrew the article is better detailed. He said more than that, he compared them to Goebbels. He talks against violence? he? better if he deal with the violence of his voters( i.e. the "sweet" settlers) and leave us alone.
You forgot Mort Sahl and Shelly Berman. In the diaspora there was a shared Jewish ethos. That does not exist in Israel. Ephraim Kishon was a marvellous satirist but came from a mittleuropisch ethos, a Jew from Hungary and other groups such as Gishash Haiver came from a type of comedic sensibility found in the Arab world. Does anyone remember the Arabic TV program in Israel with the character Abu Kalabshah?
No comedy in israel? uh, more funny then those americans in your list. Perhaps because I'm raised in Western Europe just don't see the comedy on most american comedies but the more see them in israeli comedy . P
Censorship is another form of corruption. Instead, how about: 1. An educational system that from a very young age teaches consideration and etiquette, and 2. An example from our leaders that pushes the people towards positive behaviors and away from corruption and gruffness (as is currently demonstrated).
A bunch of good-looking guys, nude but bodies modestly presented - that's all.
Jews have always been at the forefront of good comedy and satire. Take Woody Allen, Lenny Bruce, Larry David, Gary Shandling, Jon Glaser and so many others Jews from past to present for outstanding examples of wit and satire. Sadly Israel, a nation of Jews, has nothing to offer that even comes close. What passes for comedy and political satire in Israel would barely pass as low brow slapstick drek in most progressive nations (with sizable Jewish communities).
With all the ugliness, corruption and brutality in Israel and its conduct in the occupied territories and this is what these hakes in Knesset get worked up about! They simply cannot keep a lid on their own can of worms. Now its biting them in the ass and they feel the pain.
Thank G-d I don't have a TV.
Get a life, get a sense of humour and start talking about the real problems facing Israel's youth: Endless wars, socially advocated racism, the occupation, the growing power of the religious minority, and a failing education system. Isn't that enough for you to worry about without adding some nonsense about a TV programme to the list?
