WATCH: Iran police clash with thousands of anti-Ahmadinejad protesters
Thousands of supporters of opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi take to the streets of Tehran.
By Reuters Tags: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Iran election 2009 Israel newsIranian police clashed on Wednesday with supporters of Iran's opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi who had gathered in a Tehran street as the country marks the 30th anniversary of the storming of the U.S. embassy.
Thousands of Iranian security forces had assembled on the streets of Tehran to prevent any gathering by the opposition.
"Police clashed with hundreds of protesters. They were chanting 'Death to dictators'. Police used batons to disperse them," a witness said.
Another witness said police fired teargas at the crowd.
Opposition leaders Mousavi and Mehdi Karoubi had urged their supporters to take to the streets to stage protests against the government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
"There are hundreds, chanting 'God is greatest'. Police and Basij militia are outnumbering the protesters," the witness said.
Iran's Revolutionary Guards and its allied Basij militia have warned the opposition to avoid using any anti-U.S. rally to revive protests against the clerical establishment after June's disputed presidential election which Ahmadinejad won.
The unrest that erupted after the vote was the worst in Iran in the past three decades.
"Hundreds of police, riot police, Basij militia and plainclothes are in the main squares," another witness said.
"Police cars with black curtains have been parked in the squares to take away protesters."
Another witness also said dozens of police were walking around the British embassy in central Tehran.
"Dozens of police and Basij forces are around the Russian embassy as well," the witness said.
Some reformist websites have called on people to gather outside the Russian embassy, in an apparent protest at Moscow's recognition of Ahmadinejad's re-election on June 12.
Anti-Western rallies usually take place outside the old U.S. embassy - now called the "den of espionage" in Iran - to mark the anniversary.
Iranian militants stormed the embassy on Nov. 4 1979 and held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days.
Some leaders of the student militants who seized the U.S. embassy shortly after Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution, along with dozens of moderate political figures, have been imprisoned since the election in June.
In September, opposition demonstrators clashed with government backers and police at annual pro-Palestinian rallies.
The authorities deny vote rigging, and have portrayed the unrest as a foreign-backed bid to undermine the Islamic state.

Are you seriously talking about 'Evil Empires" to us?? You talki about 'knowing how hell [sic] look'....are freaking kidding me DUDE??? Let me ask you, in direct regards to Iran and Iranians: how does the 1953 CIA-sponsored operation TP-AJAX looks? Your retardedness, Iran WAS a democracy back then when the CIA decided that Iran's democracy wasn't serving the interest of uncle sam and orchestrated a coup de tat that toppled the very democratically-elected, and pro-western government of Dr. Mossadegh to restore shah to power. 56 years on, and still your illiterate crappy crowd (in your case, nyny, ny -- whatever that is!!!) have the gall to post their hated posts as if their democratic government's doing didn't do no harm to others....Really, poor you Al from "nyny, ny" forgive us, did we incovenienced you? sorry, let us bend over. What? You have a complaint about 'evil demons'??? We shall show thm!!!! Haaretz, what a joke you've become!!!
"evil empire destroyed..." - Al from the Empire State Iran is not an empire. Nothing like it. It's government has many evil men, but Iran is not an 'evil empire.' It controls no major populations not essentially Persian. It rules over no other nations, or peoples. Israel, with it's military rule over the West Bank and Gaza is far more an example of Empire, albeit a tiny one. Learn the meaning of words before you use them Al. As in the third meaning of "Empire": 3 capitalized [Empire State, nickname for New York].
"You lot only care about Iranian protesters because of Israel" - Michael No Michael, I do not. Indeed, I fear Israel will save the Ayatollahs by attacking Iran. I am a supporter of democratic principles. I trust the common wisdom more than the wisdom of any ruling class. i am as disgusted with the ruthless inhumanity of the Ayatollahs as I was with that of the Shah (who was even worse). What we are watching is the THIRD awakening of the democratic impulse in Iran during the last century. The first was destroyed by the United States and Britain in the 1950s. The second was co-opted by the Ayatollahs in 1980. The third might be the charm. Or it might be still-born by an act of insanity by Israel. If it is allowed to grow, it will reach the point where the Ayatollahs will see defections from the police and army, and eventually their ranks. Then the people of Iran will either take control of the revolution or overthrow it. This isn't about Israel. It is about Iran.
So anyway, there's no doubt in my mind that the regime is doomed, especially considering the unfolding of its characters. 3 months ago, people were counting on Raffers and looking up to him (he has some reconciliation plan which he's been working on yet stalling since Kh isn't doing so well health-wise) and the result was that he lost his standing/credibility with the people. People took down banners of KH and walked on them today!! Do you know how HUGE that is? They aren't counting on R, they chanted for Karoubi when he showed up (& of course he's been quite impressive w/ his stand on the tortures/rapes). 250 IRGC members prevented Mousavi to join. SL has lost all logic & has ordered to stay in power by the brutal force(didn't work for shah). People know & reject. They may have been OK with a lot of status quo 4 months ago-but they dont want anything short of what's fair TODAY. In their own words: too much blood has been shed to settle for otherwise...They mean business Mark....
This is the real deal Mark. The force this time, compared to 79, is monumental. And the space here is too limited for me to describe the intricacies and the level of sophistication that the opposition movement is manifesting. It is truly humbling. I've done in-depth comparative analysis reagrding 1979 vs 2009. The best way to sum it up is that while 79 was a vertical revolution with one 'charismatic leader' on top, 2009 is a horizontal movement with many local/regional brace leaders. What the western media FAILS to see(as evident by this article's portrayal of the movement that it 'follows' mousavi or karoubi) which is actually the other way around. There are cartoons showing mousavi/karoubi running after the crowds saying "wait for me". Even Mousavi himself in his latest statement mentioned that.I wish I could write the week-by week/month-by-month evolution of this movement. I knew of its existance for years, but man even I couldn't see how big of a force it really is.
I don't just care about Palestinian civilians. I worked in Bosnia with civilians of all sides. Feel free to prove your interest in civilian casualties beyond Israel and Iranian demonstrators if you choose. I'm EXTREMELY concerned about Afghan civilian casualties because we, if you are a Brit, are causing those casualties and because in doing so, we are losing the war and losing British lives pointlessly.
I think you need to accept that most of "US Lot" despise the Taleban and regret the deaths of civilians in Afghanistan, but the war there is more distanced and less pressing to us than the possibility of a Racist Regime that especially focuses it's hatred onto Israel and which is on the verge of producing Nuclear weapons. The fact that you don't think Iran would attack Israel doesn't make it a truth. So accept please that we care about civilian deaths, not just in Gaza either but throughout the World. Your inability to accept this premise makes me think you're projecting, that in reality you're being disingenuous about your concerns for Afghanistan when it's really you who concerns themselves solely on Israel. And if I'm wrong, maybe you can guide me to your posts on other newspapers in say, China, Russia, Zimbabwe, Saudi, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Sri Lanka etc....
The free world does nothing while Iran undermines Yemen as witnessed last week by Yemenite seizure of Iran ship with arms destined for Shiite fighters in Northern Yemen. The free world does nothing while Iran undermines Morocco as witnessed recently by Moroccan seizure of Iran ship with arms destined for Polissario. The free world does nothing while Iran undermines Lebanon as witnessed today by Israeel's seizure of Antiguan ship which loaded 500 tons of weapons in Iran destined for Syria to be shipped to Hizbollah in Lebanon for weapons meant to fire on civilians in Israel. Iran's quiet to charges, while Syrian FM mumbles. The free world forgets, mumbles, and does nothing about Iran's mass producing of weapons destined all over the world to undermine the free world, not to mention shiite mullah's race to mass produce nukes
Two points H. You seem to have deliberately ignored that I specifically said I would be delighted if Iran turned into a happy western-style democracy. Either that or you didn't bother to read my post properly. Secondly when I said 'you lot', I was not referring to Jews. I was referring to the pro-Israel posters on this topic. You may assume that only Jews could support Israel, I don't. Why not deal with the post I actually wrote, instead of the one you wish I'd written?
Once the evil empire of terrorist is destroyed. Hamas, hezbollah and others will crumble. At least we now know how hell will look as we have and are seeing the evil demons of hell.
I hope ordinary Iranians can loosen the grip Ahmadinejad holds. The best chance of change comes from the citizens themselves; when it is internal.
The possibility of Ahmadinejad and the fanatical Mullahs going under is fast becoming a reality. Sorry if that upsets you, but it certainly gives most of the World cause for celebration. However, if it's children hung from cranes, Women repressed, opposion murdered that you prefer then that's entirely a matter for your conscience.US LOT (Jews) on the other hand are extremely happy at the thought that a War (Possibly Nuclear) may now be averted.
....protesters want to have Iran bombed (or even nuked).
Personally I'd love to see Iran a happy western-style democracy. What I find hard to stomach is all the people on here, mouthing platitudes about democracy, but only caring about the protesters because they think they're good for Israel. Would any of you lot be supporting democracy in Iran if you thought it would bring to power a government less friendly to Israel? Thought not. It's like none of you lot are that worried about democracy in Egypt because you know it would bring the Muslim Brotherhood to power. Where are all the cries on here for democracy in Egypt?
Michael here is a simple experiment. Take up residence in Israel, criticize the govt in writing, join a protest, complain to your neighbors. Now, do the same in Iran and see what happens. Sorrowfully, you are so enamored with hating Israel that you are willing to ignore Iranian suffering by its students and political opposition to make your points.
have started the long beggining of the end for these fanatical barberians.
Mark Lincoln's words are prophetic and right.
Michael, please don't lie to yourself - your government sent troops to Iraq purely because of oil, not because of Israel, even not because of US. Moreover, by israeli point of view striking Iraq was one of the biggest mistakes our ally US did - they should have gone for IraN, not IraQ. Israel could deal with Iraq by itself very easily. So please, don't try to blame Israel for the faults of your colonial country.
If the French and Brits had not been so intent on domination by colonialism, none of this would be happening. Their misdeeds of the past have come back to haunt everyone on the planet. They made a huge mess and now blame everyone else for it. Now, they make a huge mess of their own countries and expect everyone else to pay for it. Even their own citizens. BNP is gaining power in Michael's little country. Tell me that isn't a troubling sign of things to come.
I was a medical aid worker in Bosnia during the war, and I worked at different times with Bosniak, Croat and Serb civilians. So I DO care about civlians in trouble, from a range of different backgrounds and I put in the time and effort to demonstrate that. What have you done to show your care for Iranian civilians? Or have you only started caring about them since you thought they'd overthrow Ahmedinejad for you? Did you care about Lebanese civilians during Lebanon 2 or Gazan civilians during Cast Lead?
Abdullah dropped out in protest. Karzai was the last man standing. The EU, yes your little country included, supports him too. If you want to discuss hypocrites, we could always bring Jack Straw into the picture.
From your mouth(or rather fingers) to the ear of God.
Don't you know the difference between a corrupt regime to a tyranny? Why do you care about Afghan civilians but you don't give a damn about Iranian civilians? Don't you know anything about the cruelty of radical Islam, be it the Iranian regime or the Taliban? Or maybe it's not politically correct for you to remind radical Islam?
Those of us who remember 1978-79 can see the pattern. The Supreme Dictator is going down, and he very well may take the entire government with him. The illusion of democracy has been destroyed in Iran.
I assume you haven't served in the IDF. I'ne never seen you mention it, but by all means correct me if I'm wrong. It's just a bit grating to have the world's uber-Zionist calling people cowards while sitting safely in a country that notoriously preferred to trade with Hitler rather than fight him and that hasn't fought a major war since Gustavus Adolphus was killing German Catholics in the 17th century.
from Londonistan Ahmedinajad was his man.
"UK troops are in Afganistan and Iraq, fighting YOUR colonial war`s. Israel NEVER sent its troops to fight overseas, even when explicitly asked by our best allies(US) to send troops to Vietnam, we only fight along our own borders." Well for a start Vitaly, they're not our wars. The UK has never stood to gain anything from either stupid war. We only went, in order to be nice to America. And America went into Iraq for oil, for the neo-cons and because Saddam Hussein was, at the time, seen by Israel as its greatest threat. I don't really think either that you should be proud of how little you help the US. It's always seemed a particularly one-sided relationship in which the US does everything for Israel and Israel does nothing in return apart from send the occasional spy and shoot up the occasional US ship. Though to be fair, Israel finds it hard to be part of international military coalitions, because if it joined an expedition, half the other participants would leave.
Wait for it, they will.
Perhaps the most honest solution for Afghanistan is to introduce dictatorship, I doubt that the Afghans (and the west) can handle a non-corrupt democracy there.
UK troops are in Afganistan and Iraq, fighting YOUR colonial war's. Israel NEVER sent its troops to fight overseas, even when explicitly asked by our best allies(US) to send troops to Vietnam, we only fight along our own borders. Yet UK lefties have guts to accuse Israel, instead of solving problems in their own country. Hypocrisy kills.
You don't have soldiers fighting and dying in Afghanistan Sarah. We lost 5 just this morning. You may not have heard. We're losing in Afghanistan because of the hypocrisy of our actions. We invaded Afghanistan because of murdered US civilians, but we have killed too many Afghan civilians. We invaded to remove the dictatorial Taleban, yet we support a regime that is corrupt and now undemocratic. That can only help the Taleban and ultimately mean more Afghan and foreign deaths. By contrast, Ahmedinejad's forces violently suppressed violent riots. Bit of a Cast Lead situation, you'll be familiar with. Violent over-reaction. Ahmedinejad may be responsible for a few deaths, but he, and certainly the mullahs who control him, are not mad enough to nuke Israel at the cost of having their carefully built Shiite empire exterminated. If you think Karzai's fraud doesn't matter, but Ahmedinejad's does, you're nuts.
How many students did Karzai murder? How many women did Karzai behead? How many journalists did Karzai imprison? How many nuclear weapons does Karzai intend to create? How many foreign countries does Karzai threaten? How about some depth and intelligence in your knee-jerk reactions?
Let's pray tyrany will be toppled as soon as possible.
Oh dear. It's going to be a bit hard for Western politcians to get self-righteous about Ahmedinejad at this point, since they've just congratulated Karzai for winning his fraudulent Afghan campaign.
