WATCH: How Tim Howard won the internet
Tim Howard took over the internet after scoring a record sixteen saves during team USA's World Cup loss to Belgium. Internet pranksters went as far as to edit the U.S. Secretary of Defense Wikipedia entry to swap out Hagel for Howard.
The Washington Post has compiled a short video clip of some of the internet memes that have emerged since Tim Howard's historic game, in which team USA lost to Belgium in the World Cup. While the U.S. may have been knocked out of the tournament, Tim Howard came away a national hero. The clip shows Howard correcting past injustices, including saving Ned Stark from being beheaded in the first season of Game of Thrones. Other photo shopped memes show Howard saving the dinosaurs from extinction, an egg from attacking sperm and even Disney's Bambi from a fall on the ice.
The Wikipedia entry for U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel was edited, for a brief moment before being changed back, to show Howard had officially assumed the position. Howard's exceptional game, and possibly the internet pranksters, elicited a phone call and a tweet from the Pentagon, as Hagel called to thank Howard for "defending the USA."
