Vatican urges Muslims to reject violence, work for peace

Top Vatican offical for relations with Muslims issued the statement during the Vatican's annual message to Muslims to mark the end of Ramadan.

By The Associated Press Tags: Islam Vatican

The Vatican urged Muslims on Friday to reject violence, work with Christians for peace and to teach their young to love and respect all people and not become cultural or religious blocs opposed to one another.

The Vatican's top official in charge of relations with Muslims, Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, issued the Vatican's traditional message to Muslims to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan. In it, he urged the Muslim faithful to enter into a dialogue with Christians to help us to escape from the endless spiral of conflict and multiple tensions which mark our societies.

It was the most pointed appeal to Muslims from Tauran, who was named in June to head the newly reopened Vatican office that specializes in relations with Muslims, the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue.

Church relations with Muslims were badly strained last year after a speech by Pope Benedict XVI that linked Islam to violence. Benedict later said he regretted that Muslims were offended by his remarks.

Tauran, the Vatican's foreign affairs chief from 1990 to 2003, has pledged to back the moderate forces within Islam to improve dialogue and help defeat extremist groups that encourage terrorism.

On Friday, the French prelate said all religious believers had the duty to work together for peace and to reject, denounce and refuse every recourse to violence which can never be motivated by religion, since it wounds the very image of God in man.

"We know that violence, especially terrorism which strikes blindly and claims countless innocent victims, is incapable of resolving conflicts and leads only to a deadly chain of destructive hatred, to the detriment of mankind and societies," Tauran wrote.

He said he was appealing with all his heart for Muslims to enter into a dialogue with Christians so they can work together for peace. Such dialogue, he said, would give the younger generations an example to follow and imitate.

Tauran urged Islamic leaders to educate their young in a way that honors all human creatures.

Thus all forces can be mobilized in the service of mankind and humanity so that the younger generations do not become cultural or religious blocs opposed to one another, but genuine brothers and sisters in humanity, he said.

The biggest terrorist organization is calling for peace: Rich Rich, enlightened soul. Where dwellest thou? How savest thou alive from the scourge? They call us heretics and apostates for not submitting to their rituals, idolatry and sorceries. They have ceased for a short while drinking the blood of Christian martyrs upon the alters of their idols. Now they call themselves Christians. Who are the Christians, really? False prophet calling for unity with the beasts to ravage against the Law and Covenants? They need much army like locusts to feed on the green lives of the faithful. Tribulation again at the doors?!!!

of Satan. Satan establiched Islam using illiterate Momooh whose heart was full of hatred. When moomooh was meditating in the cave of Mt. Hira, his heart must have full of hatred and prejudice. The Mohamedan arabs hate the Jews (because momooh was poison by a Jewess slave) and they must hate Christianity as well. The danger was that the arabs (desert people) wanted to keep their people from Christianity and Judaism. Then they needed a religion that was as attractive as the monotheistic religion of Rome. This combination of hatred in his heart elected him to serve the evil one.To be elected by the evil one, you have to be hateful, vicious, SPIRITUALLY ILLITERATE, and debauched, which requirements Moomooh possesed. His reactions toward the Jews and the Christians they didn't ACCEPT his demonic cult religion proved that he was vicious, hateful, and illiterate. His concubines is proof that he was debauched.

What you should have regretted is the killings of people committed by Muslims following your lecture. I am not sorry for your words but for the nun and her bodyguard murdered in Somalia and for the Iraqi priest kidnapped and beheaded in Iraq.

"Be smart let`s solve the problem rather than making more of it, because this will serve no one, but Bin Laden, don`t you agree with me?" See my last post, which was before I read this one. I definitely agree that no one religion holds the blame for violence in god's name. See my comments on the crusades. But how do we solve the problem, John? By giving Muslims everything they demand--including the destruction of a country--or else face our children's schools being bombed? As to the argument about "making more terrorists" or "driving people toward bin Laden...." Please think on how that sounds to someone in the secular West. That argument basically says, "Most Muslims are peaceful and desire coexistence and sanity and ration...unless you upset them. Then they'll have no choice but to flock toward people who advocate flying bombs into office buildings." They have a choice. And they're exercising it. The choice is demonization, violence and war.

It isn't fair to ask Islamic victims of repressive and totalitarian societies to engage in a real "debate," as the victims aren't allowed by their oppressors to access all the facts and do any real research or learning. Contrary facts are an anathema to any theocracy. If we were to go back in time to Dark Age Europe and ask peasants to consider that the Pope might be WRONG for ordering the crusades in "God's" name, those peasants would hate us for the message. Same with Pharisees in Jerusalem before Rome destroyed the temple. That's the problem of theocratic enslavement: it creates problems that people need to think their way out of, but the people fear thinking anything that isn't approved by the lords who don't want them too educated. This is how wars happen. What a sad, stupid mess to be mucking about in at this late date in history.

I do not have the expertise in religions that Existential has but I can rely on historical evidence to prove that islam is not and never was a 'religion of peace'. Islam did not send missionaries out to convert the world. They sent armies out to conquer. That is why the sword figures so prominently in Islam - see flag of Saudi Arabia. No people anywhere voluntarily choose Islam. It was imposed upon them. Submit or be faced with either death - the option to most, or second class citizenship with the addition of an infidel tax. Islam was spread very much the way Fascism was and is similar in that it does not allow any differing of opinion to exist. It is a totalitarian philosophy. Non Muslims are never respected, do not have the same legal standing and are deprived of many rights Muslims have in a Muslim controlled society. When Islam uses the word 'Peace' it really means 'Subjugation'. And that applies even to members of Islam who must submit or surrender to Islam.

It doesn't make you right being a prof,it matters if you are fair or not. Crusaders killed millions of people including jews in their hate war, but where are they now? Now still your information is wrong, about Islam but let's use the mind to solve our problems rather than the blind hate. Christianity, judiaism, have their share of violence too. Let's even assumes what you said about Islam were right, don't you think there are moderate moslems who hate the extremists too. if you are a devout jew, do you really follow everything in Judiaism(an eye for an eye), and if so,does every jewish person follows strictly the halakhah. does every chritian follow christianity strictly? does every moslem follow Islam strictly? here comes our chance of getting the moderate force to fight the terrorism, rather than let bin laden recruit more of them. Be smart let's solve the problem rather than making more of it, because this will serve no one, but Bin Laden, don't you agree with me?

Far more Muslims over the last 20 years have been killed by fellow Muslims than by the "West". Over 1 million people died in the Iran-Iraq war. How many tens of thousands did Hafez al-Assad kill Syria during the "Hama" rebellion? How many thousands of Kurds have been killed by Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran? How many hundreds of thousands of black Muslims have been killed by Arab Muslims in Sudan? The fact is, Muslims and non-Muslims have far more rights and freedoms in non-Muslim countries than they do in Muslim ones. Tell me a state in the West that forbids the practice of Islam? Saudi Arabia bans any religious practice that is not Islamic. You obviously need to "TripleJump" your brain and get an education before you start pontificating about Israel and the US...

"both of you are ignorant about Islam" I can't speak for Chic, but I am not ignorant about Islam. I'm a professor of religious studies in America. I'm well versed in Islamic doctrine. Islam is not peaceful, at its core. Islam spread throughout the Middle East and the former Roman Empire at unimaginable speeds because defenseless people faced with the warlord's armed hordes had one choice: be subjugated or die. Whatever politically correct propaganda titles Islam likes to spew while looking the other way as innocents are bombed, "peaceful" isn't one I'll allow. The very word Islam means subjugation. Subjugation is not something free peoples do willingly. The prophet was a warlord, plain and simple. "Islam" is what would have happened had Genghis Kahn started a religion.

with my respect to both of you, both of you are ignorant about Islam, both of you are just hate monger, who help only Bin laden Cause, you are by your hate messages help the extremists to recruit more astray followers. Islam is a religion of peace, and all of your talks shows that you know nothing about it, just you use the action of some wrong doer moslems to generalize. you like the world to fight each other, you are not true jews or true christians if you do so, you are just a tool in the hand of the Devil, and by talks like that you just help bin laden more than any one else.we have to empower the moderate force in Islam, to defeat terrorism, there are many moslems who are willing to help, but attitude like yours keep them away. No one will be able to erase Islam, unless your sick mind made you believe that you will be able to kill 1.4 billion people on this planet. shame on you hate mongers

and honor the "prophet's" wishes. He was specific about not befriending Jews or Christians, and about spreading Islam by the sword. It's a pickle for his cult. Now, Muslims have to either selectively ignore their warlord's words, or honor them and start wars. Which, lamentably, they don't know how to fight, much less win.

Them's fightin' words for Muslims. How dare the Vatican deny Muslims the right to jihad and sharia law! Beheading infidels is an age old Islamic right, going back to the very source of Islam itself The interesting part is that Islam has little to fear from Catholicism. It is Evangelical Christianity which will sweep the Muslim world once they get their foot in the door. In a way, the Islamic extremists are right. If you have a more moderate Islam which accepts other cultures and religions, Islam will 'peacefully' disappear in 100 years. With jihadists in control at least Islam will go down fighting. Today, Islam has no message. A religion without a message will cease to exist. Either way, we are witnessing the end of this failed religion.

If there two countries only in the whole world that have directly caused so many wars and so much violence: it's the US and it's little barby doll Israel. The last of such wars are last year's war on Lebanon and the wars on Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Over a million people have already been killed within 3 years. Never the world and the ME region has seen so many wars and blooshed in such a narrow period of time. End the occupation of Palestinians territories, end the war on Iraq, end the war on Afghanistan, and we will see a much reduced tension in the region. We all need to remember that AlQaeda, a creation of the US, was the product the Afghan war with Russia. The war on Iraq gave birth to over 30 new militant groups unheard of. Muslims have in fact been very civilized and patient otherwise we would have seen millions and millions joining AlQaeda. The fact of the matter is that Muslims themselves are targetted by AlQaeda. The Vatican is talking to the wrong people.

The Pope and the Catholic church have huge problems which they have not come to grips with. These problems are exacerbated by their winking at immorality within the church, yet the pope still presumes to give advice to those outside the church. Let the pope give his house a thorough cleaning and see if he doesn't get a little more respect upon the world stage.
