Vanunu: Take me off list of Nobel peace prize nominees
Israeli nuclear whistleblower says he does not want to be associated with Nobel winner Shimon Peres.
By DPA Tags: Shimon Peres Israel newsIsraeli nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu has again asked to be removed from a list of Nobel Peace Prize nominees, the head of the Oslo-based Norwegian Nobel Institute said Wednesday.
"He has written letters to us this year and last year also, where he stated explicitly that he did not want to be a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize," Nobel Institute Director Geir Lundestad told the German Press Agency DPA.
Vanunu, a former nuclear technician who was jailed for leaking details of Israel's nuclear program to a British newspaper in 1986, cited that he did not want to be "associated " with Shimon Peres, a former Nobel Peace Prize laureate and current president of Israel.
"The reason he gave was that Shimon Peres had received the Nobel Peace Prize, and Peres he alleged was the father of the Israeli atomic bomb and he did not want to be associated with Peres in any way," Lundestad said.
Vanunu was released from prison in 2004 after serving an 18-year sentence for treason. In a letter published last year he claimed that Peres "was the man who ordered my kidnapping" in Rome in 1986.
Lundestad said it was unusual that potential nominees make such requests, noting that in 1973 Le Duc Tho - North Vietnam's chief negotiator in the armistice talks with the U.S. - declined to accept the prize he shared with his US counterpart, Henry Kissinger.
In 1990, there was also "debate within the Sakharov family" about returning the prize given in 1975 to physicist and human rights Andrei Sakharov when Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev received it, Lundestad added.
The Nobel Institute was set up to assist the five-member Nobel Committee that selects the peace prize, one of several prizes endowed by Swedish industrialist and dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel.
In 2009, the coveted prize was awarded to U.S. President Barack Obama.
A record 205 nominations, including 33 organizations, were made in 2009. Vanunu was one of them. The committee has yet to announce its final tally for 2010 but Lundestad indicated a new record was likely.
The Nobel Committee advises that nominations be kept undisclosed but there are no rules against the procedure allowing plenty of speculation before the announcement, normally in mid-October.

vanunoo, He sold his country for 30 Shekels.
In 2009, Vanunu declined the honor of another nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize in a letter to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee in Oslo, in which he wrote: “I am asking the committee to remove my name from the nominations…I cannot be part of a list of laureates that includes Simon Peres…Peres established and developed the atomic weapon program in Dimona in Israel…Peres was the man who ordered [my] kidnapping…he continues to oppose my freedom and release…WHAT I WANT IS FREEDOM AND ONLY FREEDOM….FREEDOM AND ONLY FREEDOM I NEED NOW.” eileen fleming, producer "30 Minutes with Vanunu" and "13 Minutes with Vanunu"

"No matter how nobel his intentions were." - X-MILITARY They were not, they we pecuniary. "He was a traitor to his country and jepordized its security." - ibid He is a traitor, but he did not put Israel in jepardy. "It doesn`t matter whether his country was Israel or any other nation on this planet. As a penalty for treason to his people he should face the death penalty." - ibid Israel didn't think so, and I think the sentence was appropriate to the crime. Vanunu CERTAINLY doesn't deserve applause for what he did.
I have seen the pictures and mulled the information. I have a clue about what was compromised for profit. Mr. Vanunu is no hero, he is a traitor. He did nothing for peace. He sold out for money. He does not deserve praise, he deserves perdition.
Arafat - the terrorist who never renounced terror Obama - nominated within his first week because thats when nominations closed and awarded the prize because his name isn't George W Bush Peres has at least achieved things in his life that are worthwhile. Whilst Vanunu condemns Peres for being the father of Israels nuclear program he should remeber that he spent years working at Dimona on the nuclear program. He didn't resign for anything as noble because he didn't believe in nuclear weapons he was a very unhappy junior technicion If the Nobel Prize was worth anything anymore then Vanunu wouldn't be worthy of it but as the thing is pretty worthless these days it wouldn't be anything for Vanunu to boast about having even if he did accept.
I hope you feel the same way about Mosab Hassan Yousef, the son of Sheikh Hassan Yousef, a Hamas founder and one of its leaders in the West Bank who defected and betrayed his Father, Mother, his homeland and his religion.
The I expect you would agree that the same should be done with the traitor Pollard?
Once they used to give to respectfully people which the game of politic was not involved, but since the creation of UN the most of people whom have received Nobel peace prizes did not deserved.

Israel has never threatened anyone with these bombs, its called deterence. I can't believe people think Israel should be categorized with Iran, Syria, Korea, Iraq... These are the underminers of western society.
Aldrich Hazen Ames, Harold James Nicholson, Earl Edwin Pitts, Robert Philip Hanssen and George Trofimoff. Or Pollard.
Yes, he is in a way a traitor. So were Oskar Schindler and his wife Emilie. But by being traitors they saved 1200 jewish lives. Now you wouldn't say they should never have been allowed to see the light of day would you?
You really are a brainless twit, aren't you?
I would not also accept the same nomination because it became worthless as evident by the prior winners as Yasser Arafat and Barak Obama and Jimmy Carter.
What is that exactly that he do that was so spectacular? "Announced" to the world that Israel has nukes somewhere in the dessert back in the Cold-War 80s and got some money for it? In that case give me a Nobel worth a million...
talk about the nobel prize being reduced to insignificance. peres got it for preserving peace in the middle east! his involvement with the nuclear program in israel is a blessing and one of the ultimate safeguards of peace. long life to peres...as for vanunu, may he rot in prison with a big hairy muslim wife! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Interesting that Vanunu would not mind to be on the list with an Arafat or an Elbaradei (who allowed the Iranian bomb as well as gave Syria the green light to build a plutinium reactor). No he does not want to be on the list with the Jew Peres. Vanunu is a christian now and has turned his back not only on Israel but also on the Jewish people. Interesting Haaretz did not mention this nor the money he received for his treason. In any Arab country one would have known what to do with traitors, but as Israel is the only real democracy in the ME we gave him some years in prison and that is it. Vanunu you are a stain on the Jewish peoples clean shirt of honour and decency please be silent and live your live in Israel as you will never be allowed to leave as you remain hostile to your people.

Wish this was true for all humanity
in a country governed by moral blackguards, it is heartening to find a man who was willing to stand up for what he knew to be right and now to refuse to be associated with one of them.
He puts Shimon Peres to shame.
Mordechai Vanunu can prevent WWIII. The West should demand his immediate release and grant him asylum in the West. Let him leave Israel so he can speak to the world freely!
Vanunu is a traitor & should never see the light of day !!!
Replace "Israeli nuclear whistleblower" with a more apt term. For example: "A traitor to his people."
He doesn't need to think of Peres. Instead he can get the warm and fuzzies by associating himself with the ones who really deserved the Nobel Peace prize, like Arafat and Carter. In time we can hope to see Amadinejad on the list too.
It is not about you being on the same list as Peres. It is about exposing the hypocriscy of the Israeli State. Which claims to be a democratic nation But keeps you imprisoned even though you have served your sentence in the same manner as Andrei Sakharov You have to stay on the list, and the world needs for your story to be retold. Particularly as the current Prime Minister of Israel was elected on a promise of declaring war on Iran. You did what you did in the 1980's because you realised that Israel had gone beyond the realms of self defence into achieving the capability of destroying everyone and everything. You knew our duty then, do your duty now.
You did the world a great service. You also let us know that Israel still has moral and ethical citizens, although people like you becoming less and less? Why is assimilation increasing? God Bless You, Lou
