The police arrested 29 suspects early Tuesday in several western Galilee communities following an undercover operation conducted over recent months.

An undercover agent infiltrated a group of suspected criminals involved in drug and property crimes.

Commander of the Galilee region police's central unit Superintendent Shmuel Boker said that the undercover agent was a former criminal who had been working with the dealers for five months. During this time, the agent documented drug deals and sales of stolen goods.

The police arrested suspects from Acre, Shfaram, Iblin, Kfar Yassif and Abu Snan.

"Some 120 police officers raided suspects' homes and arrested 29 people. We intend to make two more arrests," Boker said Tuesday.

Boker added that among the 29, five belong to one family: a woman in her 50s, two of her brothers, her daughter and her nephew, who are suspected of selling drugs in Acre.

The Galilee district police officers said that "the operation is part of concerted police efforts to battle drug dealers and burglars."

    LEGALIZE IT...for harm reduction!

Harm reduction is a public health philosophy that seeks to lessen the dangers that drug abuse and our drug policies cause to society. A harm reduction strategy is a comprehensive approach to drug abuse and drug policy. Harm reduction's complexity lends to its misperception as a drug legalization tool. * Harm reduction rests on several basic assumptions. A basic tenet of harm reduction is that there has never been, is not now, and never will be a drug-free society. * A harm reduction strategy seeks pragmatic solutions to the harms that drugs and drug policies cause. It has been said that harm reduction is not what's nice, it's what works. * A harm reduction approach acknowledges that there is no ultimate solution to the problem of drugs in a free society, and that many different interventions may work. Those interventions should be based on science, compassion, health and human rights. Educate yourself. Find out MORE about harm reduction. http://www.drugpolicy.org/reducingharm/

This undercover operation is way overdue and more should be conducted to root out this wide-spread problem. The police has often turned a blind eye to the open drug dealings on the streets of Acre (Akko) and other villages. Some people charge that the police indirectly encourages drug use as a tool to control the local community. Others charge that the police intervenes only with the drug problem in Arab villages and towns spills over to their neighboring Jewish communities. I tend to support these charges because I understand the mentality & motives that stand behind this policy.
