UN Human Rights Council passes 3 resolutions condemning Israel
Human Rights Council slams Israeli policy in the Palestinian territories; Ban calls on Arabs to back talks.
By News Agencies Tags: UN Israel news Gaza warThe United Nations Human Rights Council passed three resolutions on Wednesday condemning Israel over its policies related to what it called Palestinian and Syrian territories, but the United States voted against them all.
A further resolution, calling for a fund to compensate Palestinians who suffered losses during Israel's offensive in Gaza 14 months ago, is expected to be passed on Thursday.
One resolution on "grave human rights violations" by Israel Defense Forces soldiers in the Palestinian territories - which was passed by 31 votes to 9, with 7 abstentions in the 47-member Council - demanded that Israel end its occupation of Palestinian land occupied since 1967.
It also demanded that Israel stop what it called targeting of Palestinian civilians and systematic destruction of their cultural heritage, halt all military operations across Palestinian land and lift its blockade of Gaza.
The United States and the European Union, whose seven members on the Council vote separately but generally in unison, opposed the resolution, with both saying it was unbalanced.
Another resolution called on Israel to stop building all settlements and move to withdrawing those now there, was passed by 45 votes with the EU supporting it and only the United States opposing.
The third condemned Israel for what it called systematic violation of the rights of the people of the Golan Heights. The United States voted no, while 15 countries, including EU members, abstained.
The United States, which itself is in a diplomatic row with Israel over settlements which the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is vowing to pursue, told the Council that the three resolutions would do nothing to help peace.
It said the body was too often being used as a platform to single out Israel for condemnation while rights violations by other countries were ignored.
Britain, which expelled an Israeli diplomat on Tuesday in a row over forged U.K. passports, voted for the settlements resolution, against on Palestinian rights, and abstained on the Syrian vote.
The Council is effectively dominated by a developing country bloc in which the Organization of the Islamic Conference has a strong influence and which is routinely supported by China, Russia and Cuba.
Ban urges Arabs to back Mideast talks
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Wednesday he will urge Arab leaders this weekend to support indirect talks between the Palestinians and Israelis despite their anger over Israel's approval of new homes for Jews in predominantly Arab east Jerusalem.
He told the Security Council it's crucial for Arab countries to help create a favorable atmosphere for the indirect proximity talks to succeed.
Ban said Israel's announcement on March 9 that it intends to build 1,600 new homes and Wednesday's announcement that it will construct 20 new apartments for Jews in east Jerusalem have created a crisis of confidence as efforts continue to start the indirect talks.
He reiterated that settlements are illegal under international law and must stop.
"We must not let negotiations be disrupted by provocations," Ban said. No doubt there will be tests. The parties must take steps to meet obligations and build trust. Extremists and spoilers must see that the parties are determined to press ahead."
The secretary-general stressed that the Quartet of Mideast peacemakers - the U.N., the U.S., the European Union and Russia - has urged that indirect talks move ahead and lead to direct Israeli-Palestinian negotiations as soon as possible on a final settlement that will establish a Palestinian state beside Israel.
The goal should be to resolve all final status issues within 24 months, he said.
Ban said he will brief the Arab League summit in Sirte, Libya, on March 27-28 on last week's Quartet meeting in Moscow and his subsequent visit to Israel, the West Bank and Gaza.
"I will urge them to support the proximity talks," he said. "I know that the Arab countries are frustrated, and they express their concerns and even reluctance in supporting these proximity talks."
He added that he has spoken to many Arab leaders urging support.
"I'm grateful for their flexibility, even though they have given some conditional support," he said. "This support should continue so that Israel and the Palestinians will continue their bilateral negotiations."
At the same time, the secretary-general said Israel and the Palestinians must do much more to build trust and meet their international obligations.
"There have been too many negative facts on the ground," Ban said. "We need more positive facts - a settlement freeze, a lifting of the blockade of Gaza, an end to rocket fire from Gaza, an easing of the constraints that stifle Palestinian life, prisoner exchanges, Palestinian unity, further security and economic progress by the Palestinian Authority. The list is long and time is very short."

Had the UN not condemned Israel in 3 resolutions to which Israel is guilty of under international law you all would crown the UN the greatest organization in the world. Would all you blind hypocrites that support the Israeli occupation since 1967 site back and ask your occupier to leave your land peacefully if the situation was reversed or do everything in your power to free your nation by any means possible including firing rockets at the occupying force. Hypocrites shouldn't cry foul when they are the aggressor...
It's okay to support Israel but not at the expense of the Palestinian people and especially not at the expense of the United States of America...
It is not America that you should be ashamed of, its obama and his followers. America is beautiful, from the mountains, rivers, forests, arquitecture etc. America will always be The Beautiful. Once spock, is out, we will be a civilized country once more.
While the UN human rights council debates what sanctions to press against Israel, muslim nations plan on how to blow up human beings in Israel or anywhere else for that matter. Ironic?
Judea and Samaria and all of Jerusalem are liberated Israeli Land. Tell us when did it ever belong to Palestinians? Answer Never. It was never a Pal land to begin with, so your question is invalid. The Palestinians never governed or controlled any land before 1993. To make it simple, please tell me one Palestinian President before 1993. Keep thinking. The Palestinians want a capital, which they never had, in a country that never existed. Israel existed 1500 years before Muhammad was born. Look at Islamic countries and look at Sharia laws. Its a brutal, violent and an intolerant religion. It produces the most inhumane people on this planet. Besides Saudi Arabia and Egypt, the entire Middle East and North Africa was never Arab or Muslim. The thieving Arabs stole all the land from the Native peoples in the Middle East in the 7th century and forced everyone they colonized, to become Muslim. Anyone that didn't convert, had there heads cut off. The Jews resisted the terrorist Muhammad and didn't convert. There is a primary historical fact, that must be established now. There has never been, I repeat NEVER been, a civilization, Entity, or a nation referred to as "Palestine" There was never a Palestinian tribe, and there was never a Palestinian country in the Land of Israel to begin with! Arab culture that allows honor killings to be legal. Israel is not for sale. It is not a pie to be sliced up and served to a clan of killers and their supporters. 1: When did Jerusalem serve as a capital to any Arab Country ? Never. 2: When did Jerusalem serve as a Palestinian capital ? Never. 3: Only Israel have had Jerusalem as there capital in Ancient and modern times. Jerusalem was never in history an Arab capital and never will be one. 4: How many times is Jerusalem mentioned in the Koran? Zero. Was Mohammed to so badly educated, he could not utter the word "J-e-r-u-s-a-l-e-m"
A must read article. http://www.kurdmedia.com/article.aspx?id=15139 Campaign for the international recognition of human rights of half a million Kurds ?Buried Alive? in Syria 10/13/08
Proof Golan is historically Israels. Brilliant article http://xrl.us/bmfrf
All minorities in the Arab world are treated like dirt. Kurds, Coptics, Black Christians of Sudan, Berbers, Chaldeans etc. All the U.N says is how bad Israel is, when all Israel is doing is defending herself. When one looks at the many Arab atrocities that have been committed in recent history- you realize one thing. The Arab world is racist, sexist, poverty stricken, diseased, inbred, filled with religious hatred, ignorant, and celebrates mass murder of woman and children. The Arabs have killed their own with guns, hangings, be-headings, chemical and biological weapons, electrified them, and tortured fellow Arabs to death. Arabs even kill there own woman if there raped or not virgins before they get married. (Honor Killings) Do these Arabs ever take responsiblity. I guess its far easier for the Arabs to blame everyone else for there failures
The Golan Has Been Jewish for Centuries These rotten Arab colonialists have stolen lands from Kurds, Berbers, Copts, Babylonians, Chaldeans and they want to steal Jewish lands as well. The Golan was part of ancient and modern Israel for centuries, while it was under Syrian occupation for a mere 21 years!! The archaeology of the Golan is proof that the Golan is Jewish. I personally helped dig up a Talmudic era synagogue in Katzrin which is now has a visitor centre. The only Arab land is (Saudi) Arabia. The Arabs can go back there!!

You would think that this is one area where Obama can act without limitations from Congress. If this is any indication of his commitment to the issue, then the U.S. should bow out and let the Europeans take over the task of brokering a peace settlement, because THIS is just more of the same. All the U.S. is doing is making sure Israel is able to continue its occupations and settlement building, to which the U.S. ostentatiously objects, but will not confront as it should be confronted. This "no" vote, coming in the midst of a major flare up of so-called disapproval over those wretched settlements, makes it abundantly clear that Obama has been effectively reined in by the pro-Zionist power brokers in Washington. And any way you look at it, with Congress completely controlled by Zionist interests and essentially strutting the same views as Netanyahu's right wing governemnt, the U.S. has got to be the absolute WORST choice for brokering an equitable resolution to the conflict.
Bobby G, I agree completely. The UN Headquarters does not belong in New York City. The obvious best place to put it is in the international city, owned by no one but the UN, Jerusalem.
even if not completely representative of the majority of their citizens. Kudos to them for their vote/abstention on two of the three issues. And shame on the U.S. for its continued patronage and protection of a country that operates in direct contradiction to American values.
Bastions of depravity, human rights do not exist and they have the courage to accuse Israel and vote in favour of these farses. The Moralist Human Rights council is proof of the way our world has become, bash Israel because there is no down side and they fall into the hands of those who should be condemned.
Didn't the US veto them?????
The veto-wielding US always sides with Israel in the UN, claiming the world's only global institution of democracy is biased as it ignores the human rights abuses of other states. Translation, "The US ignores the human rights abuses of other states." If it's good for business, good for the arms trade, good for strategic advantage, what's the harm in a little human rights abuse? Follow suit, world. What's good for Israel is good for the gander. Oppress as you like, just steer clear of our bottom line.
Not enough to satisfy anti Israeli hord here. We had a week of rage, week against occupation, how about a week of UN resolutions condemning Israel?
No one takes that circus seriously.
Bobby G, you talk about the UN being a dump, and that it should torn down, with perhaps stadium being put in its place (as if you people need yet ANOTHER bloody stadium.) But the thing is that it's pretty hard for the UN to be a cesspool when Zoo York is in and of itself one giant cesspool.
Jordan Stole E. J. and when Israel took it back all of a sudden it is Palistinian Territory, strange how that can be, as they have never existed in history. Just because Arafat said it don't make it so, wake up you idiots, E.J. has always been Jewish, and history proves that. Of course that would take a little time for you that can not read to find out.
the Human Rights Council seriously? The name itself is Orwellian.
One BIG Garbage dump in the east side of Manhattan. New York's cesspool. Time to tear it down, put up a new stadium or hospital, Anything but this smelly, evil dump. You all can open another UN in Iran, for all we care. For Shame, Good riddance. Pheww.
The surprise is not more resolutions to add to the 130 odd UN resolutions Israel can pride herself in being the subject of, and mostly in violation of, but that people are finally listening. The truth is out.
Amazingly these clowns never quite get around to their own police state suppression of peaceable assembly, illegal detention and murder of dissidents, persecution of religious minorities etc. The lunatics have taken over the asylum and stride up and down playing the humanitarian. Get real.
The voting in the UNHRC, I think, is just a prelude to what is really going on behind the scenes. US, which is new to UNHRC, cast 3 negative votes. This, I think, was pre-ordained. What really matters is what happens at the UN Security Council. Now with UK and Germany totally incensed with Israel also, time is ripe for UNSC to pass a resolution to halt all East Jerusalem building and return of land occupied/annexed in 1967. No one agrees with annexation. So, with such a resolution passage, UN is in the position to enforce it, by force, if necessary. I think that is what Obama probably told Netanyahu. (just my guess). UNHRC is the first step. More to come with Goldstone Report being referred to ICC through the UNSC; it's coming.
NO PROBLEMO!! Uncle Sap will veto them, as he always does.
Rulings like this are the reason that this body has lost so much credibility in the world.
after closely following the middle east politics for many years the conclusion is that as long as countries such as that in the eu have double standards and opposed to every thing israeli/jewish the search for peace will never end Now the settlements is the issue before it was the whole of israel why cant you wake up and smell the gun powder from the arabs they dont want israel to exist every thing and any thing else is a pretext to the end and stupid people like the brits the french the rest of them buy into it because guess what collectively they all hate the Jews
The Jewish people had that land for thousands of years, what the hell is the UN talking about 1967 like Israel stole that land, give me a break it is the UN who should pay for all the Jewish people's homes in all of Jerusalem.
"Another resolution called on Israel to stop building all settlements and move to withdrawing those now there, was passed by 45 votes with the EU supporting it and only the United States opposing." I thought this was American policy, as well as being the legally correct position. Pathetic!
The day when US joins in condemning Israel for its openly inhumane treatment of the Palestinians should be celebrated as a justice day all over the world, problem is that this day will probably never come.
These resolutions weren't confined to settlements. They also cited "targeting of Palestinian civilians and systematic destruction of their cultural heritage" presumably on either side of the green line. A Palastinain State right now would have as its mantra, consistent with these resolutions, that Jews target Palastinain civilians and destroy their cultural heritage. This would be coupled with an underlying assumption that the Jewish state is illegitimate and the Jewish people are not worthy of respect. This perspective is similar to, and as racist as, the Black Nation of Islam. Louis Farrakhan would feel right at home. It's pretty sick. Anyone who is serious about a two state solution will have to recken with how to deal with this. It goes well beyond a political solution.
Get me out of here. Anywhere.
The UN Today. Scrap it. And put up a better & fairer Organization in Jerusalem, The Eternal Capital of Israel. In this new Organization,People & countries can be sure to be treated fairly & with justice. The building, when vacated can be used as a Zoo-Museum !
Wowe - what else is new....
When the Human Rights Council votes funding for Gaza damage, the U.S. should not give a penny. If money comes out of Council funds, the U.S. should deduct that amount from future donations.
Tell them to leave your country and take their missions with them.
This is the same "Human Rights" Council which is oblivious to terrorist rocket fire. The appropriate response is not verbal, but gestural, and it consists of a single finger.
terrorist extremist
Firstly,it has to be said that British votes weren't cast according to British wishes but in accordance with the realities of New Labour. New Labour is only interested in human rights as a nice sounding slogan.Human rights in Britain have been like pie crust in their hands. Turning to the settlements issue and starting with the reasonable premise that New Labours policies have a cynical, selfish motive,I can suggest a good reason for its anti-settlement policy. Living in an area where you have to be a member of the Labour Party to be a successful land developer,it seems to me there's jealousy. They don't want Israel to develop land, they want THEIR fingers in the pie and the profits from it. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!
Nothing new here.
