UN: Hezbollah has increased military strength since 2006 war
United Nations report says Hezbollah capacity now comparable to period before Second Lebanon War.
By DPA Tags: Hezbollah UN LebanonMore than a year after the summer war in southern Lebanon ended, the United Nations said Wednesday the Hezbollah militia has "rebuilt and even increased its military capacity."
A report to the United Nations Security Council on progress to pacify southern Lebanon said Hezbollah's military strength is now comparable to the period before the July-August 2006 war with the Israel Defense Forces, which ended with a council-ordered ceasefire.
The report said the findings about the situation in the region is "deeply disconcerting and stands in stark contradiction to the terms of Resolution 1559," which contains the ceasefire provisions. It called for disarming forces in southern Lebanon and for the UN peacekeeping operations and Lebanese army to monitor the ceasefire.
Under terms of the ceasefire, Hezbollah has to be disarmed and transformed into a political party that would take part in political life in Lebanon.
The report by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, which covered the past six months of activities in the region, called for renewed political dialogue in Lebanon to reaffirm the commitment by all parties to disarm.
"I also expect the unequivocal cooperation of all relevant regional parties who have the ability to support such a process, most notably the Syrian Arab Republic and the Islamic Republic of Iran, which maintain close ties with the party, for the sake of both Lebanon's and the wider region's security, stability and welfare," the report said.
The report said "most political parties" in Lebanon were preparing for the possible deterioration of the situation following the rash of political assassinations of Lebanese politicians.
"Rearmament and military training directly contravenes the call contained in Resolution 1559 for the disarming and disbanding of all Lebanese and non-Lebanese militias," the report said.
It called on Syria to cooperate with the ceasefire resolution and respect Lebanon's territorial integrity, sovereignty and political independence.

check your spelling? did you say Miracle by Hiz ebola? Mohamedans do not have miracle. ask your lone "Profit" moomooh and read your KKoran ? Its not there?
HIDING THE UNDER THE SKIRTS OF WOMEN? is that what you mean? Its easy to claimed,"BUT" you are the only who believes these cowards, using innocent civilians as human sheilds, AND WHERE IS YOUR BRAVEST NASRALLAH DURING THE WAR? WHO FIGHTS "FEROCIOUSLY" BY HIDDDDING UNDER YOUR BURKHA?!!!!
lol Why not look at the facts bud. True, the Iranians did aparently break Israel's communication codes, but that is relatively easy tofix. And, Israel gained some terrific insight from the war to ensure that Hezbollah will not be able to hide quite so easily in the future. Read up on their new spysat which sees through trees and clouds and will be able to follow the terrorists and pinpoint them for far more accurate responses and less civilian casualties in the future. lol.
we are giving you 3 billion a year so you fight like men , not to get defeated by hezbollah and damage the reputation of our weapons , ,,,and the worse that your pilots bombed shelters and killed 36 children and cristo called hezbollah fighters cowaaarrrds ... who are the cowwaaarrds ? before july 2006 you are nothing without ur support after support , after july 06 I think you are nothing even with our support ...because you trained your soldiers to kill innocent children and not fighters ....
hezbollh broke your reputatuions forever.. I am still amazed how few hundreds to 3000 fighters defeated the IDF (despite the 3 billion dollars from uncle sam in adition to top techn warfare access ) ....the message from this defeat can't be swallowed easy this is way u are angry about the lebanese toilet that flushed your army .
Is this how Arabs and Muslims overture peace?
hoping like Goebells that if the lie is repeated often enough---.
You know something is wrong when the UN honestly says that it is concerned that Hizbullah has rearmed but Olmert persists in saying how successful the war and the diplomacy was in securing the north of the country. I am starting to believe that Israel would be safer as a protectorate under UN administration than as an independent country under the current government.
The following sentence: The report said the findings about the situation in the region is "deeply disconcerting and stands in stark contradiction to the terms of Resolution 1559," which contains the ceasefire provisions. And again: "Rearmament and military training directly contravenes the call contained in Resolution 1559 for the disarming and disbanding of all Lebanese and non-Lebanese militias," the report said. The fact is that the UNSC resolution number is 1701, and not 1559 (which is the one initialized by Michael Aoun, while still in France, to get Syria out of Lebanon ... ). I suggest that Haaretz make sure about the source before pasting it?
IDF worse terrorist organisation than Hezbollah!!! What did you drink so early in the morning that you see an army as a terrorist organisation? Especially worse than the deadly Hezbollah? You remind me of the worse part of the Dutch population during WW2. Are you related to them or just a moral inspiration?
Which is hardly suprising because the causes of the war last year have not been resolved. Hezbollah still have in their possession the Israeli soldiers Regev and Goldwasser. Israel still has init's possession Shabaaa Farms. So ironically the reasons for both Hezbollah and Israel throwing their rattles out of the pram still exists on the ground. Despite the goings on of last year. The UN are ineffectual simply because their soldiers are not prepared to die for the dubious cause of keeping Israel and Lebanon apart, and whilst Hezbollah rearms and is allowed to nothing is going to happen to them. Lets face it Hezbollah can have as many weapons as it wants, the important thing is that they are not used.
Do you live in a Moslem neighbourhood in London and is somebody holding a knife to your throat while you wrote those lines? Otherwise I cannot understand your enthusiasm to side with the bad guys.
After all if Israel decides to go on another orgy of terrorism and collective punishment in Lebanon (remember that Israel slaughtered 1000 Lebanese civilians in response to the kidnapping of 2 soldiers) it's good to know that they will not escape punishment. Thanks to the slaughter of so many innocent civilians by the Israeli terrorists in 2006 it's only right and proper to regard the IDF and IAF as being far worse terrorist organisations than Hezbollah. And if the IDF receives funding for its terror campaigns then it can hardly complain if a less dangerous terrorist organisation such as Hezbollah re-arms itself
Rowan says it: " If there were a threat to Lebanon, that was well known and did not arise from Syria." (RB) Sure. Harriri just accidentaly stepped on a bomb...Rowan Berkeley is a typical polite antisemite - starting slowly on the talkback and "finding himself" later on. I really learned a lot about the Jew haters on Haaretz's talkback! Rowan, at least, has class. Not playing with "cones", "martians", and the like.
Nasrallah admitted it.
"Pakistan voted" so you are a commedian as well?
Durson assumes the megalomaniac role of the ultimate arbiter of all that is right and wrong...she never has a moment of self-critical doubt about her opiniated views....she is undoubtedly man's greatest invention since god
Hezbollah won the war? hahahaha thats funny. That bunch of quivering cowardly scum better hope that Israel doesn't unleash it full military might.I hope if it happens they dont hide behind the apron strings of Lebenese woman again.
Natallie Durson makes a wise assession of Israel!?! Israel of course is the culprit, because it first attacked Hezbollah. It is the one who rained missels indiscrimately at the civilian population. And of course, poor Hezbollah was the one who the UN promised they would not allow to rearm. Imagine that hey? And all will have to conclude how effective the UN has been in not allowing pitiful Hezbollah to rearm, hey? Yes, we have read words of wisdom today as Natallie Durson has reminded us once again that Israel is to blame in all this. One wonders where the next comedian will roar in from.
Pakistan?s speaker said he had also abstained, as the resolution was not consistent with the Council?s functions and responsibilities. Moreover, there was no evidence of any urgent threat to peace. There had been no complaint from the country whose sovereignty and integrity the draft purported to uphold. On the contrary, the Lebanese representatives had communicated to the Council their opposition to consideration of the resolution. Besides, the text addressed the wrong threat. If there were a threat to Lebanon, that was well known and did not arise from Syria.
Not the Army of Allah an illegal militia, making a mockery of Lebanese democracy and government. There were overflights because Hesballa immediately ignored their undertakings. Nasrallah is in hiding so he is safe anyway.
Then the mighty and glorious victors could not wait for a ceasefire which they accepted. The leader of the victorious army is still in hiding.
A BBC report on Hezbollah some 3 months ago showed Italian peacekeepers policing a busy road in South Leb. on purpose of checking the arrrms flow. The BBC reporter stated "During 2 hours we spent with the Italians they didn't stop and check even one car "
You said there was a loophole and was not applicable etc etc ad infinitum. Going set them straight with another Johnboy interpretation of Johnboylaw.
Stock in trade of the Arab apology industry. Needless to say Hezballah could not wait for the UNSCR to end the war that Hezballah started. Just a guideline to dealing with "honest Nasrallah" and supporters in the future.
...UN: Hezbollah has increased military strength since 2006 war... So does Israel, even more than Hezbollah. So, what's the problem? Hezbollah violated Israel's sovereign territory 2006, so does Israel over Syria airspace 2007. So, what's the problem? Israel has been occupying Sheeba Farm and Golan, and West Bank and Gaza. Hezbollah doesn't occupy any of Israel's territory. Conclusion: Hezbollah is a little better than Israel as a member of International Community.
Before talking about the money US gives us to do the dirty work for them in this part of the region, just compare it with the money US is spending DAILY in the other half of the region (Irak)....and not counting your casualties....You want people to die in your place for your ideas..there is nothing wrong in helping by paying a very small yearly price. You seem to direct your anger against Israel, but it is not Israel's fault if the biggest army in the world (yours) is getting kikked in the ass by a bunch of camel riders...
Israel began breaking the UN resolution the day it was enacted with flyover incursions into Lebanon. On several occassions Israeli aircraft made mock attacks upon United nations land and sea units, who complained and said that they would retaliate if these activities continued. As for disarming, it would be foolish for Hizbollah to disarm unless Israel likewise disarmed, since Israel is dedicated to assasinating Nasrallah and has sworn, in the past, to wipe out Hizbollah.
guys guys guys Hezbollah won the war and win if you start anything stupid , and plz don't even think of something stupid like attacking leb again coz everybody here can see Hezbollah stronger than before , and i mean much much stronger :)
In 2000 the withdrawal of IDF by Barak of the South Lebanon gave the opportunity to Hezbollah to control the entire South Lebanon and South Lebanese army which control the defense during 20 years of the north border of Israel and lost many of his soldiers in this activity fleed to Israel because they have not been told about this withdrawal. Meanwhile from 2000-2006 Hezbollah controling alone the South Lebanon brings all this missiles which let him win the 2006 summer war.The bargaining of Israel with Hezbollah begging some bones of abducted soldiers make Hezbollah in a position of equal to the state of Israel .Is that what imagine the founder of Israel?
So you can lose twice as bad next time? Your idea of "winning" a war is destroying whole city blocks while being tens of thousands of feet in the air..how heroic
When it came to the issue of an alleged illegal nuclear reactor being built by Syria. Go to the IAEA, shame shame on Israel for not following the diplomatic niceties. One year, one single year later, and we're now informed by the UN, the same body that put forth the troops to prevent Hizballah from obtaining these weapons. The same UN who put up a blockade at sea, who threatened sanctions, now informs us that Hizballah is now back as powerful as before.
"Giving the UN the finger as well as blowing them up. Arabs and their apologists please explain." Gladly. Hizbollah should pay exactly as much attention to U.N. resolutions as does Israel.
are you mad because the IDF could not defeat hezbollah .....it is a miracal how bunch of cowaarrrrds insulted a professinal army (IDF ) despite 3 billion dollares yearly aide from the uncle sam in adition to access to top technology warfare available .... and the worst that they (HEZBOLLAH ) are stronger today . so i understand your anger ....
Giving the UN the finger as well as blowing them up. Arabs and their apologists please explain.
The stronger they are, the more confident and arrogant they become. And then they will become more provocative toward Israel. Then Israel will have no choice and attack them. This time it will be done right, including the removal of our satin gloves. When the smoke will clear you know who will be left standing.
Lebanon is such a beautiful country, it has the potential to be the gem of the entire Middle East. It therefore amazes me that they insist on stuffing themselves with militants and private armies which transforms their gorgeous country into a toilet that needs occassional flushing. Hezbollah seems destined to again turn lebanon into a disaster area. My sympathies go out to the vast majority of Lebanon's Citizens who would rather live in peace than be forced into another war. What an awful shame! At least the United Nations is there this time to verify the fact that these Hezbollah Militants are preparing for War - Israel will have more support this time.

they are insane terrrorrrists!!! whose tactics in war is to hide fighting face to face "ferociously" UNDER the skirts of women and children. They must also increase THEIR HUMAN SHIELDS. Cowwwarrrds!!!
Come one, come all! Place your bets on when the next bombing will occur in Lebanon! Now that the United Natio...I mean THOSE BLASTED ZIONISTS! have affirmed that Resolution 1559 is a crock of shit and points a finger at Hezbollah, surely a bomb shall go off to turn away the spotlight. So place your bets, place your bets! Who will it be? Where will it be? Side betting on half assed conspiracy theories accusing Israel are accepted.
