UN: 2,000 Palestinians fleeing Iraq stranded on border with Syria
Refugee relief agency says sick children among the Palestinians, who have no access to medical aid.
By The Associated Press Tags: Syria UN Palestinians IraqGENEVA - Two thousand Palestinians trying to flee violence and harassment in Iraq are stranded at the Iraqi-Syrian border in precarious conditions with sick children unable to receive medical treatment, the UN refugee agency said Friday.
Some 437 Palestinians are living in Al Tanf refugee camp on no-man's-land between Iraq and Syria, and another 1,560 have sought shelter in al-Waleed camp on the Iraqi side of the border, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
Living conditions in the desert camps are harsh, with sandstorms blasting the makeshift homes and winter approaching, said spokesman Ron Redmond. He added that up to 40 Palestinians arrive at al-Waleed camp every week.
The borders are basically closed because of the visa restrictions that have been imposed by neighboring countries, he told reporters in Geneva.
The agency is particularly concerned about 11 sick children in al-Waleed camp, who urgently need medical treatment, Redmond said.
There are children with spinal injuries, skin diseases, intestinal problems, cancer, leukemia, he said. Very serious cases, and they're unable to get the help that they need inside Iraq.
UNHCR has made a global appeal for somewhere to resettle the children, but so far only Chile and Sudan have indicated they might host some of them, Redmond said.
In August, UNHCR managed to resettle a Palestinian family of eight with several sick children to Norway, Redmond said.
The estimated 13,000 Palestinians still living in Iraq face ongoing threats, he said. The Palestinian community there has become a target for persecution in recent years, largely because they are seen as having been favored under Saddam Hussein's regime.

They took the greenhouses that cost their benefactors $14,000,000 and could have brought them $100,000,000 a year and destroyed them. How in creations name does anyone think they'll ever manage a state? Now the Gazans are building a $200 million dollar movie/propoganda company and meanwhile crying poverty. They wouldn't know an opportunity if they tripped over it.
unfortunately. Having studied Ancient and Modern Mideast History it is clear that these Homeless and displaced Arab refugees calling themselves Palestiniansnow want a homeland of their own and a 'Proposed Palestinian State' is to be designated as their future Homeland to be called 'Palestine'. The mext Discussion on this subject is to take place in Annapolis at the end of this month.
Why should quoting you: "Ashkenzie Jews go back to Europe"... because that is NOT where Jews come from. The Jewish people originate from their Homeland in Palestine and were only dispersed into the Diaspors by the Romans in approx. 70AD when they lost a war against their Roman Rulers. Jews had to go any and everywhere, to Europe, the Middle East wherever and were even persecuted where'ere they went because they were not always wanted. Jews were exiled into the world until they returned to their original Homeland in Palestine, legally established on 29th November 1947 by the UN with US and Russia following. On the other hand, all Arabs originate from Arabia. Noteworthy: It is amazing to see what little knowledge many Posters have of world events. Perhaps this may be a good way of learning..... Thank you Haaretz.
These stranded Palestinians who were once living in Iraq but are now in Refugee Camps on borders with Syria are those favoured by Saddam Hussein who invited them to Iraq, gave them good jobs and beautiful homes. After Saddam was deposed Iraqis took the law into their own hands, pushed them out of their homes and jobs and left them stranded in Refugee Canps. Saddam Hussein always loved the Palestinians, paid families of suicide-bombers $20,000- each after a successful bombing attack in Israel which killed and maimed thousands in Israel. This is AUTHENTIC.
No one wants themn and with good reason. Everywhere they went they have bitten the hand that helped them. Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Iraq. Maybe Sudan could accept them as they could help the janjaweed as mercenaries. This is a sick and degenerate society. They know only how to destroy. In no way are they capable of running anything other than an orange orchard. Granting them statehood is just adding to the world's problems, not solving any. Jordan is Palestine and that is the solution. Gaza, Judea Samaria will just be terror bases in their hands. Israel will suffer but so will any civilized, non Muslim part of the world and maybe some Muslim ones too.
by surrounding Arab States you ask... and is the reason that ultimately they fall into Israel's hands. Everyone wonders why. Perhaps their Actions speak louder than words. The Israeli War Hero and Tourism Minister Zeevi was assassinated by Palestinians by saying 'TRANSFER' them back to where they came from, the Arab Countries because they were a 'Troublesome lot'.
I'm glad to see we can agree on something. What you suggest would be an ideal solution. But we do have a huge bureaucracy problem at Homelan Security. When they created DHS, they moved all security clearances into a single unit of DHS for almost all government agencies. But they didn't staff it right and they are running years behind. This is even problematic for military security clearances because our military serves in lots of foreign contries. My daughter (Navy) was in one duty station for almost a year before her security clearance was received. Then they kept her an additional six months to make up for the lost time she sat around waiting. My son almost missed a unit deployment to Iraq, because his former assignment had been in Korea and they had to fly somebody to Korea to talk in person to his former CO. There was nothing unusual in either background. But their procedures are a bureaucrat's dream - more complex and rigid than Hillary's health care plan from 1993.
I know the world likes to feel sorry for the Palestinian "victims" and they like to feel sorry for themselves. But they, and the Arab countries, by making them stay refugees for 60 years, have created their problems. Why does no one say to them, "Why are you having so many children when you don't have the means to take care of them properly?" How about: "If you create terror and mayhem wherever you go, no one will want you."
and after 1300 years of destroying our country they started pretending that they are the long extinct Greek Philistines.
For more than 60 years the arabs claim that they will fight Israel because of Palestinian but when it comes to take care of Palestinians they treat them like second class citizens, I heard that from many Pals. can any one explain that as it contradicts .
they refuse to go back to their homeland in the sand dunes of Arabia. But no, they would rather steal other peoples lands and terrorize them.
He is busy trying to make the West and Israel look bad.
You mean the surrounding Arab states dont want the Pal.Wonder why???
The US could take them in and offer them new lives. If they have no terrorist history I say let them come. There is a large and successful Palestinian community in the US that could help them.
the palestinians "had" homes. a lot of them lost these homes when they fought against israel. those are to blame. the others lost their home during times of war and while i feel pity for them, they are not entitled to a right of return. as to why Jews are getting monetary compensation for the Holocaust: you cannot compare Palestinians running because they lost a war to the genocide that resulted in the murder of 6 million people. Jews also do not want their land back - stolen land! - because they were persecuted in Europe and clearly were not wanted (hence the callous murders that took place). Palestinians running away? Let them settle into their arab-bretheren countries. oh wait, their bretheren don't WANT them to settle.
in particular the Maronites, whose entire world is crumbling, and who are crippled by high emigration, low birthrate, increased persecution and marginalization, and severe internal squabbling. But the West does not care about them because they are not the poor Palestinians. Just to remind everyone here, the Lebanese Christians were the only Arab Middle Eastern group ever to recognize Israel's right to exist. On May 30, 1946, Maronite Patriarch Antoine Pierre Arida and the elected Jewish Agency conclude a secret treaty. The Maronites recognize the Jews' right to statehood in Palestine, and the Jews affirm the independent, Christian character of Lebanon. The Christians were also Israel's only ally outside its border, with the SLA remaining loyal allies until the last minute. It was us that sold them out. So, permit me not to feel bad for "Palestinians" in Iraq, whose forefathers attempted to push us into the sea. I fear more that if Christian Lebanon crumbles to dust, Israel is next.
Chile is a stand up country, go to Chile and you will always be welcome.Sudan on the other hand will place them into slavery. Maybe the rich Arab oil exploiters will help...Not a chance. Those dudes have never cared. Sad, Saddam made no provisions for them either. Any ideas out there??
They mostly came from the Carmel villages and raided Jewish towns in the area and attacked Haifa. At the end of the war, they were allowed to emigrate to Iraq and collect Iraqi army pensions. Tom Segev wrote about this here in 'Haaretz'. In the words of Detective Harry Callahan: I'm all broken up about their rights!
IT'S UNBELIEVABLE EVERY MUSLIM COUNTRY WANTS NOTHING TO DO WITH THEIR PALESTINIAN BROTHERS.MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE LIKE THEIR COUSINS IN LEBANON,WHENEVER THEY GO TO A MUSLIM COUNTRY,THEY ARE TREATED LIKE CRIMINALS LIKE SAUDI ARABIA,CAN THERE BE A REASON.
I am with you here. And where is the outrage in the west by those so prompt at chastazing Israel. Note also the hypocracy of Iran claiming to be willing to fight for the palestinians and letting their shia allies in Iraq slaughter them.
Remember that when the "Paletinains" say "Right of Return",that it means any Iraqi refugee that claims to have had a "Palestinian" ancestor"!
Get over it because it simply won't happen. The American Indians had and have no one to help them .... we won't let the Palestinians become the Indians of the Middle East... their fight will continue until they regain their homes and lands. Justice must be established as far as they are concerned. Why are Holocaust survivors asking for money as a way of establishing justice? ... may be they should take your advice and get on with their new lives??? So, my friend, you can keep dreaming, but the reality is that the Palestinians are going to be around asking for what belongs to them. They are entitled to do so. They did not come from the moon... they had homes, lands, families, lives, etc. No one has the right to tell them to forget it all!
These people are victims of the US ivasion and occupation of Iraq. The US should take responsibility. There are many possibilities, letting them resettle in the PA terriories, bringing the to America, building them someplace real in Iraq. But they should not be abanoned by the US. When we invaded, we broke the system that allowed them to live in Iraq. It is a US responsibility. But then again, King George believes in responsibility for everybody but himself.
The fact is that none of them have any connection to Haifa, Lod, etc.
on what their Arab "brethren" really think of the Palestinians. It's only the politicians and intellectuals who "care". The man in the street either doesn't give a damn about the Palestinians or regards them as a nuisance. I was personally witness to this on my trip to Egypt after the borders were opened in 1982. We were two different groups of academics from the same university. The other group met chiefly with Egyptian academics, and the attitude towards the Israelis was not very friendly. Our own group wenr into the towns and villages and met people in the markets and on the street. I was hugged and kissed twice when the locals learned I was an Israeli and some of us were even invited to a Coptic Christian wedding in Aswan. The Israeli Arab member of our group was snubbed and treated like dirt. The only time we ever encountered an unfriendly attitude was on our visit to the Islamic Al Azhar University in Cairo. Well, what do yu expect from Islamists?
I do feel sorry for the children. Why doesn't Syria take them in? And where is the outcry over this mistreatment by fellow Arabs?
Where is he and his so called Arab unity. What a load of B.S that man is.Even his father who was a ruthless tyrant would have taken these people in.
So...Jews coming back to Israel/ Palestine?... come on... I'm not taking a side.. well yes I am but.. seriously have a better argument. ps. try some compassion as well.
i'm tired of this request to have Palestinians return to their "home lands". you look at history and you never EVER see the vanquished return to their homes which they either lost due to their aggressions or due to persecution. do you see jews flooding back to Poland? do you see native americans repopulating cities like Toronto and Winnipeg? The Aztecs taking over all of south america or are black people all returning to africa? the answer is: no. people accept their new life. the palestinians gambled back in '48 and lost. time to grow up and move on and settle amongst your brothers in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon.
Enough is enough if the Ashkenazi Jews need to go back to Europe then all the arabs must return to Arabia where they came from. The region would be peaceful if it wasn't for them spreading their lies and hatred in every country.
Many years ago when the entire region was one big colony, there were no borders. The Arabs of Palestine were the same Arabs as Iraq, Leb, Syria, Saudia, etc. Those Arabs stuck in Iraq are right where they belong.
