U.S.: We are pursuing next steps on Iran nuclear issue
Iran dismisses Western deadline for deal; Ahmadinejad: U.S. forged reports on Iran nuclear program.
By Reuters Tags: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Iran nuclear Israel newsThe White House has begun to take steps to confront Iran's unwillingness to "pursue its responsibilities" on the nuclear issue, spokesman Robert Gibbs said on Tuesday.
"We've begun to take those steps, if Iran is unwilling to pursue its responsibilities," Gibbs said.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday dismissed a year-end deadline set by the Obama administration for Tehran to accept a United Nations-drafted deal to swap enriched uranium for nuclear fuel.
The deal aims to diminish Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium, easing the West's fears that the material could be used to produce a nuclear weapon. Iran, which denies it seeks to build a bomb, has balked at the deal's terms.
"The West can give Iran as many deadlines as they want, we don't care," Ahmadinejad told supporters in the southern Iranian city of Shiraz.
Lashing out at Washington, Ahmadinejad added: "If Iran wanted to make a bomb, we would be brave enough to tell you? Iran won't allow the U.S. to dominate the region."
Ahmadinejad told a U.S. news program on Monday that a reported confidential Iranian technical document describing Tehran's efforts to design an atomic bomb trigger was forged by Washington.
Ahmadinejad was asked by ABC News about a Times of London report last week on what it called a confidential Iranian technical document describing a four-year plan to test a neutron initiator, the part of a nuclear warhead that sets off an explosion.
"They are all fabricated bunch of papers continuously being forged and disseminated by the American government," he told the U.S. network in an interview in Copenhagen, Denmark, after he attended the United Nations conference on climate change.
Reports that Iran is working on a bomb trigger are "fundamentally not true," said Ahmadinejad.
The Times of London published on Dec. 14 what it said was the Farsi-language document, along with an English translation, entitled, "Outlook for Special Neutron-Related Activities Over the Next Four Years".
The document describes steps to develop and test parts for a neutron initiator, a device that floods the core of highly enriched uranium with subatomic particles to touch off the chain reaction of a nuclear explosion.
Last week Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast called the report "baseless ... not worthy of attention, intended to put political and psychological pressure on Iran."
Iran, the world's No. 5 crude oil exporter, says its uranium enrichment program is aimed at generating electricity so that it can export more gas and oil. The West believes Iran wants bombs from enrichment because of its record of nuclear secrecy.

only the 'pretext' was wrong, but for that you can blame the dysfunctional UN...iraq had in fact been trying for wmd's for 30 years, had osirak blown up in 1981, was later hiring out of work russian nuke scientists, was subverting food for oil towards weapons programs, was in violation of over 17 UN resoultions, was killing his own people with wmd's (chemical weapons in halabja)..was ethnically cleansing...and the PROOF that america was not in it for oil is NOW being seen in who is winning the iraqi oil contracts...most are NOT american...iraq is far better off today than they were..in the post 9/11 environment, iraq was moral & just and so too is iran. Obama himself said some wars are moral and striving for peace sometimes means force must be used. I love that obama is basically following the bush doctrine to a T. How amusing is that....ahh sweet justice...bush was a great man..courageous, visionary.
you dont SOUND very impartial. israel is not and has not been the aggressor in the middle east - not even close buddy. israel has not promised to wipe anyone off any map. israel has responsibly had nukes for 45 yrs. I seriously doubt any of the arabs could do the same. Israel does not support proxy terrorist armies on other countries borders to terrorize innocents. Iran does. Israel has repeatedly sought peace with their neighbours. Israel is a democracy with a justice system that is the envy of the entire world. In summation my new mexico friend who lives on stolen GENOCIDALLY ethnically cleansed land, you are not impartial...not at all and moreover, your words clearly show how out of touch you are with anything approaching reality. I smell a jew hater in you from miles away buddy.
so something needs to be invented that makes nuclear weapons obsolete, kind of like bringing a knife to a gun fight.
Really.. and that comes from someone with your background.. dont worrie, we are not Arab, we were ruling the region and the known world when your tribes were starting to make fire.
#5 Alice this the best answer I've heard in a long time.#15 arash the greatest good for the greatest number. The middle east or iran, my choice the middle east screw iran and their regieme nuke'em till they glow, they would be incinerated not fried.
There is a great deal of similarity between these two dictators, Sadam and Ahmadinajad. Standing up to the west, providing hardware and finacing terror groups around the ME, thereatening other countries and developing nuclear bomb. The Iranian dictator regime is trying to streach it as far as it can go by delaying tactics. I suggest they learn the lesson from Sadams before it's too late!!
That's the name of the game, it has nothing to do with deterrence. Israel will lose her nuclear hegemony in the Middle East if another state get's nuclear weapons. I think it's a great idea, Iran gives a lot of nations in the ME a nuclear umbrella forcing Israel to stay in Israel. Israel has invaded 3 nations in the last few years, Iran has not. Seriously, why should 5 Million people hold 1 Billion hostage in the ME with their nuclear weapons. It's completely ridiculous.
I guess not, seems like Deja Vu to me.
"They are all fabricated bunch of papers continuously being forged and disseminated by the American government," I am sure it's as forged as the NAZI documents that Bibi brought with him to the UN in response that the hollacust never happened....
Something has really changed in the world when even the mullah's fan club on Haaretz talkback have all stopped trying to pretend that Ahmadinejad is not building a bomb. Obviously the dictatorship is not as brave as it wants the world to think since it is still keeping up a transparent pretence that even its most fanatical supporters have abandoned in the face of overwhelming evidence. Ahmadinejad's manifest cowardice can only be a reflection of his regime's military weakness and lack of popular support in Iran itself. The Iranian people will not fight for the mullah dictatorship!
So alice you enjoy seeing millions of people fried to death,I suggest you seek medical care for severe mental illness ASAP.with people like you another holocaust is possible ,keep you hate to yourself thid is not a joke .
You cannot allow unstable islamic dictators to have nuclear capability. It is like giving a child a box of matches to play with.
by the people of Iran. His religious zeal will cost him a bullet between the eyes then he will see,as many other muslims have, that when they die, they don't make it to paradise
A reality check from an impartial, fair-minded long term observer of the Middle East.... 1. Israel introduced nuclear weapons to the Middle East. If supporters of Israel don't want Iran to do the same, wouldn't it be just to support the elimination of Israel's nuclear weapons? 2. If Iran had nuclear weapons and Israel did not, would not Israel seek to acquire those weapons as a deterrent to attack by Iran? Given that Israel has often been the aggressor in the Middle East, it seems only normal that MANY of the states that Israel has threatened would seek a an effective deterrent to attack by Israel. 3. Israel has been, at best, the most reluctant participant in attempts at peace between the Jews and the Arabs/Persians. This might have short term advantages to Israel, but long term, it risks the country's survival. Why is it that a race as extraordinary as the Jews can't seem to raise leaders who are able to make peace? Where is the Jewish Sadat?
Iran has not signed the Addional Protocol, so it is in its right not to abide with that. By a similar logic, Israel has not signed the NPT, so they are allowed to have nuclear weapons. You can't have it both ways. If Israel is not bound by treaties it did not sign, neither is Iran.
That OUTSTRETCHED HAND is really working eh? way to go obama...anyhow, he said he needed time to at least try the diplomatic approach, and time is now up...how long does it take really for iran to say, ok, we will comply? why must they? because the UN, the US, the EU, everyone is saying, you must..and therefore, they must! but they don't and won't. The ONLY way out is a military one. While the left loathes this position ahmedinejad is taking, the truth is, only miliatry action will work. It will delay the program, give strength to the reformists, and give us all time to topple that regime, and if we have all bought time, great. Iran is rushing to make nukes regardless if we strike them or not...the left likes to use the excuse that if we strike them, they will race faster towards weaponization, which is utter NONSENSE..they are racing there no matter what we do. Is obama more concerned with the price of oil than real peace? THE BUSH doctrine is obamas doctrine per his oslo speech.
Iran is not Iraq. The US couldn't contain Iraq or Afghanistan who're even more poorly armed...
I've read both your posts. Iran won't let the U.S. dominate the region. That could also be taken as a defensive statement, in that if you send "whatever" our way, we will have the necessary hardware w/fissile material and the trigger for it all, in order to REPEL such an attack. Similarly w/ Israel. I think to understand one has to see it that way. When it comes to military solutions, doesn't everyone think along the same lines, also the best defence is a good offence, so if you have the upper hand, you are all set. Believe me, it is a war of religion, religions. That is why we say: acharey kiclot hacol, levado yimloch nora." In other words, when men have stopped trying to solve their problems, Hashem will still be there. We are here on Earth for but a fleeting moment.
Iran have every right to do what's best for Iran regardless of what anyone else feels about it. Israel thinks the Middle East and the rest of the world should revolve around them...keep dreaming!
IF IRAN WANTED TO MAKE A BOMB, WE WOULD BE BRAVE ENOUGH TO TELL YOU? IRAN WON'T ALLOW THE US TO DOMINATE THE REGION Sounds to me more like an admission of guilt than a way of saying we don't want nukes. How else do they think they are going to stop the US dominating the region without a nuke? If it came to conventional war Iran right now with just the recources the US has in the Gulf, 2 carrier fleets & it has airbases that alone would be enough to wipe out the entire Iranian military machine within a week. If Iran had a nuke they could try and be the bully boy of the region pushing around he Gulf States threatening Israel. Maybe even start making demands like the US close its airbases. They would also be recognized as a global military power in the hope it will give them muscle when dealing with the west in diplomatic problems.. We don't want to risk Iran using that nuke so lets try and appease them. Iran NEEDS a nuke for its long term bully boy ambitions.
is mike mullen telling me that bush is not responsible for one single death? and mike mullen also? mike mullen is not responsible for one single death? come on.
with prosecuting US army exploiters and criminals and terrorists out of their "official luciferian puppet package"? and where are prosecutions of those sitting on imf and wb?
Temperatures will reach 1500 degrees farenheit, winds at 500 miles per hour, and overcast form the next week. UV index is 1000.
Iran knows that its position is untenable. The cross border diversion reference a contested oil well, by Iranian troops without firing a shot caused two main points. One, oil prices rose, Two it showed that Iran will not wait for any preemptive strike by US Forces. Iran could well disrupt the Straits of Hormuz, using small boats and mines effectively. Also not to forget Iraq. Iran can well count on many supporters and create chaos as US troops prepare to deploy to Afghanistan. Iran is flexing its muscles, telling the world that they are not willing to lose their military counters before a battle with either the US and Israel. The January deadline is approaching fast and the regime will no doubt act before either sanctions or a military attack. The so called forged documents is another regime ploy, for they have been caught before with blueprints for a nuclear warhead. The West has played the waiting game for so long, searching for a diplomatic breakthrough, that is far off.
We've got similar situation before attack on Iraq. We will hear more false information.
Obama is desperate to find a solution that doesn't involve either force or sanctions .. he likes group hugs. Forging information that says Iran is working on nuclear triggers is the smoking gun that the pro air strikes people have been looking for. Also the report was not leaked by the US it came from a British newspaper the Times and everybody was taken by surprise with this report. I think the one thing we can be sure of is it didn't come from the US and Obama should take it seriously because even if they are not testing nuclear triggers yet considering they are getting closer to nukes and more reliable delivery systems everyday its only a matter of time before it comes to testing the detonation devices begins. Also once they get delivery of the S-300 anti aircraft rockets the only planes that will be capable of doing the job will be the B2 bomber & the F22 Raptor both aircraft in service with the US and if they rule out air strikes nobody has the hardware to pull it off.
"Ahmadinejad is working on a Micro Nuclear Bomb." That's what I was made to understand. Now is that true or false? I'd like to know. Maybe some newsreporter will read this and pop the question one of these days? Let's see if he answers this one or dodges it. If he dodges it, then maybe we'll be on to something. Body language speaks volumes.
