U.S. to 'target Iran Revolutionary Guards' in latest sanctions
Iran atomic chief says a deal with West still possible, after Obama warns sanctions imminent.
By Haaretz Service and Reuters Tags: Iran sanctions Barack Obama Iran nuclear Israel newsSenior White House officials said the Obama administration is planning to target Iran's Revolutionary Guards in the next round of sanctions meant to curb Tehran's nuclear program, according to a report Wednesday in the New York Times.
The officials said the sanctions would single out the organization's vast network of companies, banks and other entities, describing what they called a "systematic" effort to drive a wedge between the Iranian population and the Revolutionary Guards, which the West accuses of running Iran's nuclear program and supporting militant Islamist organizations.
U.S. President Barack Obama said on Tuesday the international community was moving "fairly quickly" toward imposing broader sanctions on Iran, after Tehran said it had started making uranium enriched to 20 percent.
Obama said Iran's refusal to accept a United Nations-brokered atomic fuel swap agreement suggested it was intent on trying to build nuclear weapons, despite its insistence its atomic activities were only for the peaceful generation of electricity.
Last month, a top adviser to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad brought a proposal to expand the political voice of the civilian militia corps called the Basij. The motion passed easily, according to pro-government Web sites.
The Revolutionary Guard has always been a centerpiece of Iran's Islamic establishment. But the latest door opened to its militia wing suggests a deepening policy role by Iran's most hard-line groups as opposition forces grow bolder in their demands and the West considers tighter sanctions over its nuclear impasse with Tehran.
The Basij will again be out in force Thursday for expected protest marches to coincide with events marking the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Their attempts to crush the anti-government movement have been well documented since Ahmadinejad's disputed re-election last June, including the trademark Basiji motorcycle charges in protest crowds.
What's perhaps less noticed - but with even deeper significance - is the evolving role of the huge Basij force from loosely organized Islamic vigilantes to a more cohesive force with increasing channels to Iran's leadership and security apparatus.
"It's clear that the Revolutionary Guard has been increasingly inserted in Iran's decision-making equation during the crisis," said Patrick Clawson, deputy director at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. Expanding the role of the Basij is a natural extension of this.
The Basij's big brother, the Revolutionary Guard, has long been a pillar of Iran's regime as a force separate from the ordinary armed forces. The Guard now has a hand in every critical area including missile development, oil resources, dam building, road construction, telecommunications and nuclear technology.
It also has absorbed the paramilitary Basij as a full-fledged part of its command structure - giving the militia greater funding and a stronger presence in Iran's internal politics.
The chief of the Revolutionary Guard, Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, often accuses dissidents of waging a soft revolution against the Islamic system and says forces such as the Basij are needed more than ever to quash internal threats.
Iran: Nuclear deal still 'on the table'
Iran believes a nuclear fuel exchange with the West is still possible, state television said on Wednesday, a day after the Islamic Republic's expansion of uranium enrichment drew a U.S. warning of more sanctions soon.
"The deal is still on the table," Ali Akbar Salehi, head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, said on English-language Press TV.
But he appeared to reiterate Iran's demand for a simultaneous fuel swap on its soil - a likely non-starter for Western powers who want Tehran to send most of its low-enriched uranium abroad before it gets higher-grade material in return.
Salehi said Iran's uranium could be sealed and under the "custody" of the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency [IAEA] in the country, until it receives the fuel it needs for a medical research reactor.

Under international law Iran has no right to nukes, Iran CHOSE to sign the NPT whilst Israel chose not to. Nuclear weapons are not toys so we shouldn't be saying that we should let Iran because you think it will improve relations between Iran & the US. Its also more likely to increase tensions between Iran and the US because alongside the nukes Iran is developing missiles to deliver the things. This rocket with mice they recently sent up is probably more about development of ICBMS than science. What do you think will be the relationship will be like between the US & Iran if Iran had both nukes and ICBMS which could hit mainland America? The only reason Iran wants nukes is because they want to be regional bully dictating terms to the Gulf states and to the US itself. If Iran has nukes on missile that can hit the US says we want you to close down your airbases in the Gulf etc How long will the US tolerate being dictated to by Iran, the result will be US nukes pointed at them
Right at this moment, the thing on sensible peoples' minds with regard to Iran is not entirely nuclear weapons. Its more trying to force Iran to organize itself in such a way that it has no need for nuclear weapons. This is done through diplomacy and media games. Nuclear weapons are not the most pressing thing on the minds of anyone seriously, right now, nor will they be soon, unless diplomacy is deliberately sabotaged. Fortunately, there are people with sense enough to avoid that.
Yes Iran's big fantasy is to get the bomb, use nuke threats against the Arabs to get them in line, get a seat on the UNSC as a permanent member like the other "superpowers", then force Islamic sentiments worldwide.
As for your two reasons... (1) It doesn't matter if there is credible evidence that Iran is developing nuclear weapons or not. It would still be a step toward normal relations if they do. (1) Every nation that has nuclear weapons has an implied threat against their enemies. If they did not ever intend to use them under any circumstances, then what's the use in going to the trouble of making them? As for Israel getting nuked: If this were to happen, it would be a result of Israels actions, not mine. I don't welcome killing on either side. If I seem anti-Israeli, it is simply because they slaughter the most civilians and then repeatedly dodge responsibility. This has been going on for decades. Perhaps you haven't noticed?
Celso Amorim said today,he is againt any sanctions and Iran has the right to have its nuclear facilities. only a political solution is the way. it is time for you to go and play the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, silly Pedro
You must be about the mullah dictator's last friend now that Russia has announced its patience is over and China is considering sanctions.
What we see today in Iran is the end result of the interference by arrogant, belligerent, manipulative US/British oil and natural resource thieving powers - Operation Ajax. Operation Ajax 1953 brought about the overthrow of the democratically elected Iranian Prime Minister, Mohammad Mosaddeq. What was Moaddeq's 'crime' - he nationalized Iranian oil! Mosaddeq nationalized Iranian oil. The profits from Iran's vast oil reserves would stay in Iran instead of flowing to the British who had previously controlled the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company. O.K. Daniel, now it's time for you to do your homework. Read of the cosy relationship Israel/MOSSAD had with the corrupt puppet Shah of Iran (installed by the Operation Ajax gang) and the Iranian oil supply to Israel, prior to the 1979 Iranian revolution. When the rule of the Shah of Iran stopped oil to Israel also stopped. Get the picture, Daniel?

"I can mention one or two wars in which Israel could have used nuclear weapons if it really had wanted to (ome example: the Yom Kippur War)." - Yonatan Israel went on nuclear alert in the evening of 8 October 1973. This was detected by both the USA and USSR. By the morning of 9 October both had responded by raising their alertness and taking actions designed to prevent an Israeli use of it's 13 bombs. The US rushed supplies and replacement equipment to Israel. The USSR sent nukes to Egypt. . . Israel DID use it's nukes Yonatan, as a deterrent.
"Well, if Israel DOES have nuclear weapons, why haven`t they been used up till now?" - Yonatan The mere existence of nuclear weapons is sufficient to invoke the only benefit of having them. They ensure you will not be the only loser in a war. Aside from that, they are fundamentally useless. You can't go around nuking non-nuclear nations because the world wouldn't stand for it.
Really? Tell me one war the US fought for Israel?
"There are those of you who wouldn`t believe Iran is developing nuclear weapons even if one was placed right before yur eyes." - Yonatan I would have no problem 'believing' what there is evidence of existing Yonatan. I am very concerned that Iran is developing a break-out capability. I am very concerned by Iran's aid to Bolivia in opening a new source for Lithium as well as an Iranian 'pesticide' company trying to purchase large quantities of exceptionally pure Mercury. Do you know why those two substances raise my eyebrows Yonatan? I have a clue, and I don't think you do, of what to look for in a nuclear weapons program. The world's major intelligence services do. No one has run an atomic weapons program without being noticed long before they developed a bomb. Yet none of the world's major intelligence services has given the IAEA the goods on Iran. Why? Belief Yonatan is a far inferior state than Knowledge. That is why I prefer knowledge.
The next IAEA report should make an interesting read. Anyone who wants to can read the November report at the IAEA website. There is an IMMENSE amount of REAL information about Iran's nuclear program available if anyone tires of hype and speculation.
"For Iran, nuclear weapons are a step toward normal relations" - Natallie Durson Twaddle. For two reasons. First there is no credible evidence that Iran is actually working on nuclear weapons. Second, the fact is that EVERY nation which has developed nuclear weapons discovered that limited what it could do instead of letting it act any way it wanted. Israel cannot seriously contemplate a nuclear strike against a non-nuclear Iran because the world-wide backlash would be massive. Yet Israel does not have the ability to stop the Iranian nuclear program with a single strike if it does not use nuclear weapons. Your wet-dream of Iran nuking Israel is not going to happen Durson.
There is a world-wide shortage of some medical isotopes caused by the shut-down of the Canadian National Research Universal heavy-water moderated reactor at the Chalk River Laboratories last year. This unit had been the world's major source of medical isotopes, particularly technetium-99. This means that Iran is unable to purchase necessary isotopes and is under sever pressure to refuel the TRR. This problem not only involves the problem of enriching the Uranium to 19.75%, but producing pure Metallic Uranium fuel and encasing it in rods. Quite a different problem than producing 4% enriched Uranium Oxide and making fuel rods. The desire of some politicians to ratchet up the crisis for internal political reasons has overridden the technocrats - including Ahmadinejad - who are aware of how critical the TRR situation is becoming.
I was very satisfied by the offer of the US State Department, spokesman Crowley, to deliver medicinal isotopes directly to Iran. Press TV stated their refusal, so, sadly, you are right. My objection in the issue, uttered under 7, is now void. I hope the iranians get their regime change.
Tony, the P5+! nations are not victims of Zionism. ALL have sound interest in seeing that Iran does not become a nuclear weapons nation. Thought there is no credible information indicating that Iran HAS a nuclear weapons program, it is developing what is called a 'break-out capability." The only way to be certain there is not a unannounced 'break-out' is to have Iran FULLY compliant with the NPT and it's Additional Protocols. Thus if Iran wants to get rid of the sanctions ALL it has to do is comply FULLY with the IAEA's requests. The reason Iran cannot simply purchase fuel for the TRR as it has in the past is IT'S refusal to comply in full.
Democratic Iran will close the nuke program and sign a peace deal with Israel.
I was very satisfied by the proposal of the US state department, J.P. Crowley, to deliver medical isotopes to Iran. Press Tv stated their refusal, so, sadly, you are right. May the iranians get rid of them.
Islam's espoused, exclusive religious nature got to the Persian Ayatollahs' heads and goaded them into proudly basing their new country's name of "Islamic Republic of Iran" from a supposed Aryan heritage, with the dreams of the establishment and rule of a new Religious Reich. Now it's the demise of the Jewish State the new Aryans are after while their predecessors, the Aryans of Hitler's Germany, went after the Jews that they first dehumanized so their murder and slaughter could be more intellectually palatable later. Iran is convinced that nuclear-tipped military power and its eventual propagation through its growing militant proxies worldwide will finally bring "peaceful" Islam the respect it's due.
Israel has had nukes for the better part of 50 years have they used them? You live in Denmark do you really trust Iran to have nukes and not fire them? The reason no one cares that Israel has them is because they are a decent people the current govt. in Iran is not. Sorry pal your arguments suck!
The seemingly needy pan-handler will hesitatingly follow you into MacDonald's for the free burger offer and look totally disinterested as what he really wanted was your cash to go buy his drugs and feed his addiction. In this case Iran would love to receive in exchange, non-tainted, pre-enriched nuclear material on their soil so they can more quickly boost it to weapons-grade addiction status. They're not really interested in receiving any materials offered to them that can only be used in hospitals, even though that's what the disingenuous leaders in Iran publicly claim.
Are we trying to punish the Revolutionary Guards? Or are we trying to stop them from enriching uranium? One has very little to do with another. If you want to stop the enrichment of uranium bomb the plant. Who cares about the revolutionary guard.
I did not have much hope for Obama to deal effectively with Iran, given the hand he was dealt. But at least I do give him credit for confronting the Iranians, which is more than Bush ever did. It was Bush who replaced Saddam in Iraq with an Iranian puppet government, which opened the door to Iran's growth into the dominant power in the Muslim Mid-East. Iran should have been confronted back in 2001-2003, when the US still had the military, economic and political advantage, and when the Iranians need us to deal with al-Qaeda. Instead, Bush ignored the entire problem. We are paying for that today.
Outside of your own hatred of Jews, do you have any proof that Israel ever used nuclear blackmail? No? Didn't think so.
How many times has Israel threatened to nuke another country? ZERO TIMES! You have no argument.
There is a difference between Israel and Iran. Israel has never threatened to destroy anothe country. Iran has. None of the Arab states ever felt concerned enough over Israel's nuclear arsenal to respond with nuclear programs of their own. With Iran, however, they do see enough of a threat to begin plans for their own nuclear weapons development. That alone disproves your point. There is no question on what Iran is doing. They are openly developing missles designed to carry nuclear warheads. There is enough intel from multiple sources, including non-Irsraeli and non-American, to show what Iran is really doing.
US is doomed by marxist Obama. Let's hope Bibi awake from this nightmare.
Name 1 war America went to fight for Israel? 1948 ( Iindependence ) 1956 ( Suez ) 1967 ( 6 day war ) 1973 ( Yom Kippur war ) 1983 ( Lebanon ) What was Americas role in any of those wars? Israel, India and Pakistan all chose not to sign the NPT that means for them having nukes is all perfectly legal and they are also not obliged to show anything to the IAEA inspectors and its why Israel hasn't faced any sanctions. The Shah of Iran signed the NPT that means under international law they are forbidden from having nukes and they must open up all nuclear sites to IAEA inspectors on demand. Which christian & jewish NGOS fund violence? You make alot of accusations Tony and have no evidence to back them up and you show a total lack of understanding of international law such as the NPT. Get your facts right next time
While `charities` or other tax-exempt NGO are rightly forbidden to fund any Muslim groups that conduct ?violent? activities, They are quite free to support `Christian` or "Jewish` organizations that fund violence. It?s an example of the legal system skewed by politics. This delegitimizes the ?Western? Narrative and provides inroads for the totalitarian agenda of all sorts of radicals The enlightened approach is only valid if it is applied in a generalizable perspective and not as a selective tool of partisan political agendas
We all know that israel has more than 200 nukes ready to be used against its neighbours. So,what sanctions did it face? ZERO SANCTIONS !!
Just like when Iran MIGHT be building a nuclear weapon there are no end to the condemnations, but when Israel builds a bunch of Dimona, then Mordechai Vanunu exposes it, then is kidnapped by the Mossad, then spends 18 years in prison for exposing Israel`s lies and 11 of them in solitary confinement, you only heard about it in a Human Rights Watch.
a war FOR israel !!
Barack Hussein Obama provides Iran enough time to build a bomb and to provoke apocalypse in Middle East and outside Middle East. The "door of diplomacy" will remain opened until then
as it does nothing to stop the progress already in place. Iran has quite a stockpile of everything they need to continue their pursuit of nuclear weapons. Washington and Jerusalem are gripped by fear and have decided that Tehran will stop their nuclear quest if they receive more tender loving care from the West.
YONATAN IN KFAR SABA GOD BLESS YOU AND ALL YOUR FAMILY. GOD PLEASE GIVE ISRAEL STRENGHT. AMEN AMEN.
Once Iran has nuclear weapons, Americas new task will be to welcome them warmly into the fold rather than provoking them and labeling them as criminals or evil doers. As we have seen in the case of Israel, nuclear weapons open up a world of potential. Some of Israels supporters are proud to claim that Israel has never dropped a nuclear bomb on anybody yet, proving that Israel is a responsible user of nuclear weapons. The fact is that Israel has had no case in which dropping a nuclear bomb would have aided their case except during the Yom Kippur war, when they threatened to nuke Cairo. This threat was made to the American president in order to move America, and not to the press. Nobody can ever know how many times Israel has used nuclear blackmail because this will always be done in that same manner as in 1973 and not through the media.
Those who defend Iran at any cost are those who are prepared to ignore or disregard the abismal human rights record of the primitive Islamist regime in Teheran. The monumental hypocrisy of the western intelectual so called politically correct elite lashing out at Israel while turning a blind eye at the oppressive treatment of women, minorities and believe or not intelectual elite in countries like Iran is absolutely disgusting to say the least.
The Revolutionary Guards control Iran. They control the industry and finances. Nothing comes or goes without their approval. The gracious president and his cabinet know only to well that sanctions are the only option. The US will only go to war if attacked. The US is already under pressure from China. The French have sold Mistral Class warships to Russia. For the Russian Black Sea fleet rusts. The Baltic States are up in arms. Help.! They shout. So, now what. Sanctions,? Sure. What else can Washington do.? The problem with America is that they have to chew on some pretty hard steak, the teeth are not strong enough. Who wants to be a president of a nation that has slowly become wayward without the backbone required to confront the greatest threat to mankind.! That is a nuclear armed Iran.! The theocratic regime is far removed from US understanding or diplomacy. One can be sure, that the US faces the same threat as Israel. The question, does Washington understand that.? Good day.
AIPAC already got our useless Congress to pass these useless sanctions last month. You see, Congress cares more about Israel's enemies than passing healthcare reform and creating jobs for Americans. This is why the Left and Right are pissed off with neocon lobbyists and their sinister influence in Congress and the White House.
Aciton that is needed, a strike in the nuclear sites.
nuclear fallout.
Common people in Iran are very nice and their education and civilisation is high. After accepting the swapdeal on Iranian conditions the Atomic Agency can control that Iran not enrich uranium above 3%. But Israel, who claims to have the most moral army that dont want to harm civilians, promotes the non-acceptance, what means that Iran effectually is sanctioned in its needed medical supply if they do it not themselves and is threathened with further sanctions if they do it. Thats pure blackmail about an needed medical supply at the cost of the common iranian suffering in an lethal disease. Play the game against the regime, not against the iranians.
China is the biggest problem to be resolved before any attempt to impose worthless sanctions.
C'mon now, you have to defend Iran at any cost, right? No holds barred! There are those of you who wouldn't believe Iran is developing nuclear weapons even if one was placed right before yur eyes. And there are those that believe that Iran has the right to develop nuclear weapons because Israel is reputed to have them, and Israel, being the most belligerent country n the ME, nay, the world, will use them against its Muslim neighbors. Well, if Israel DOES have nuclear weapons, why haven't they been used up till now? I can mention one or two wars in which Israel could have used nuclear weapons if it really had wanted to (ome example: the Yom Kippur War).
after Bambi's decision. Who'd keep tabs which company is "one of he vast net belonging to Revolutionary Guard"? And is Bambi assuming Iranians are incapable of changing companies names and official ownership ?
If the hired mercenary Basij "Storm Trooops" of the murdering mullah think they can beat the united Iranian people they have another think coming. The Workers United will never be defeated. Strike for Bread, Freedom and Peace with Israel. The blood of the martyrs will never be forgotten. Democracy Now!
and my mother say i can not lie.
...in US and EU courts. That's what got the hostages freed in 1981 and forced the regime to agree to the establishment of the Iran-US claims tribunal - which has cost the regime billions.
"The deal is still on the table," Ali Akbar Salehi, head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, said on English-language Press TV. Yes its still on the table... unopened and collecting dust.
