U.S. slams Israel over designating heritage sites
Clinton: It's absolutely necessary that Israel, Palestinians begin to talk about final-status issues.
By The Associated Press Tags: Hillary Clinton Israel news Middle East peaceThe Obama administration criticized Israel Wednesday for designating two shrines in the West Bank as Israeli national heritage sites.
The criticism came as Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said she hopes long-stalled peace talks between Israelis and the Palestinians will resume.
Clinton told a congressional committee that groundwork is being laid to restart the talks with the help of U.S. envoy George Mitchell.
She did not say exactly when the negotiations might resume, but her remarks come amid a flurry of U.S. diplomatic activity in the region.
The United States, Russia and their Middle East peace partners are trying to organize a strategy session among top diplomats next month in Moscow to prod the two sides to re-launch the negotiations.
"We hope that that will commence shortly," Clinton told the SenateAppropriations Committee, referring to Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. "We think it is absolutely necessary that they begin to talk about the final-status issues that divide them, that have perpetuated the conflict over all of these years."
Underscoring those difficulties, the State Department on Wednesday sharply criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government for adding two shrines in the West Bank to Israel's list of national heritage sites. The move, announced Sunday, sparked Palestinian protests and has drawn criticism from other quarters, including the United Nations.
State Department spokesman Mark Toner said the administration viewed the move as provocative and unhelpful to the goal of getting the two sides back to the table.
Toner said U.S. displeasure with the designations of the Cave of the Patriarchs in the West Bank town of Hebron and the traditional tomb of the biblical matriarch Rachel in Bethlehem had been conveyed to senior Israeli officials by American diplomats.
The Palestinians claim all the West Bank as part of a future state and also protested the Israeli move as a provocation, a largely symbolic gesture. The move heightened long-standing tensions, particularly around the shrine in Hebron.
Jews revere the site as the Cave of the Patriarchs, where the Bible says the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were buried along with three of their wives. Muslims call it the al-Ibrahimi mosque, reflecting that Abraham is considered the father of both Judaism and Islam.
The U.S. and Russia are trying to convene a meeting of the so-called Quartet group of peacemakers - those two countries plus the European Union and the United Nations - in mid-March in Moscow, according to diplomats. A tentative date of March 19 has been discussed but is not yet confirmed.
The meeting would bring together Clinton, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton along with other European officials, including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who is now the Quartet's special representative.
It would seek to build on the work of Mitchell, the special U.S. envoy for Middle East peace, who has been shuttling back and forth to the region with only limited success in improving the atmosphere for a resumption in peace talks.
If held as planned, the meeting would follow a recent flurry of U.S. diplomatic activity in the Middle East, including a coming trip to Israel by Vice President Joe Biden in the second week of March.
Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg is in Israel now to participate in this week's U.S.-Israel Strategic Dialogue, and Clinton's other two top deputies, Jacob Lew and William Burns, each returned from separate trips to the region in the past 10 days.
Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak is due in Washington this week for talks with senior administration officials and will see Clinton at the State Department on Friday. Clinton herself just returned from a trip to Qatar and Saudi Arabia that coincided with a visit to Israel by Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff.

I realize you would think Israel was building military bases to attack America the way Obama and so Hiliary attack Israel about it the Arabs have their own heritage holy sites which I respect why is it Israel should not be allowed theirs may be Obama and so Hiliary think it is 1939 and so the British still ocupy and so run Israel may be they do that but who cares God and so Allah watch over the J*wish people and the Arabs he they protect both they will destroy America if Obama and so Hiliary go too far RIGHT ??? Thank You... M. S.
US foreign aid amounts to only .08% of its budget. Most of that aid is in the form of credits to purchase US products. The US has tried the tough talk in the past but ended up with Soviet influence waxing and US waning. Now not only Russia is looking for clients but so is China. The aid money that Israel gets doesn't account for all US trade and Israel serves the US by providing a well armed force close to the US lifeline. The US is certainly not neutral. You may not be able to link nation to terrorist but politics and religion are something else. The pilot was clearly a communist as his suicide letter revealed and the "army doctor" was an Islamist, although Obama is afraid to admit it. As for the Bible, you should read it so you could see that Israel in the 21st century is the realization of the millenia long hope of Jews based directly on that sacred book.
First of all, the Vatican is not a holy site and neither is the White House - as I suspect you are aware. However, all the most significant holy sites of Christianity and many of the Islamic ones, are located in Israel. No-one is demanding that you give up your holy sites, just that you show the same respect to the billions of people who do not share your beliefs, and wish to have free access to worship at sites sacred to them. I'm afraid that it is not the world that has a double standard, it is those jews who believe that they can just take whatever they want and do not have to justify anything to anybody. What if all the christians in the world decided that they should be able to reclaim all their holy sites?
all we ever get is lip service from the U.S.
..Mr Davis it's obvious you know little about the US foreign aid programs and there are many programs which benefit Israel. The foreign aid is a gift to Israel. It has no relationship to jobs in America--your comment is bogus. If jobs were the objective, we would build the military hardware and keep it for ourselves. Or help jobs in another sector of the economy. Your concept of Research & Develp is wrong; it's human capital in R&D not production capital. Basic research is based on brains not efficiency.
It's a different administration to begin with. The former Bush Administration spoiled Israel to think their relationship with America was to continue under Bush's "do as you want" attitude. The only time that the US negociating team and foreign policy team works in peace process is when America is perceived to be neutral to both sides. Obama's team is incorporating the Arabs more than Bush did; and Obama is frustrated by the pettiness and "hollow words" spoken by Israeli's leaders. Or lack of leadership. Danny, you cannot lump individual terorists with their country of origin. In America some guy flew a plane into an IRS building & some Army doctor shot a bunch of soldiers at Ft Hood; Is the American system to blame in those cases? The bible doesn't fit into 21st Century geo-politics. That is where the problem rests and where it will be solved.
The breverend fathers sailed to the States from Plymouth Devon, would that give the USA the right to claim it? The French invaded Britain in 1066 and ruled over it for over two hundred years, most brits decend from French origins would France be in the right to claim Britain?
Why does this administration slam Israel? Why are we suddenly siding with Muslim nations that continue to breed hatred toward Americans and Jews? Nations that would like nothing more than to wipe Israel off the map. In case they have forgotten and need a refresher course, please pick up copy of your Bible and read the Old Testament. Give Israel their land back and leave them alone. Thank you.
Let see how many extreme Zionists on this board advocate ethnically cleansing the remaining Palestinians from the West Bank? By the way, I'm sure a future Palestinian state would not obstruct Jewish access to these sites if you started to behave in a civilized manner towards them.
Take back more land. For every 10 rockets sent into Israel, 1 square km of land should be taken back, settled and not ever negotiated back. It's that simple. Obviously, a successful and an ongoing peace process results.
Funny you should mention what the US ought to be doing. Natanyahu said as much, that Israel ought to be producing its own materiel instead of outsourcing US labor to do the job. Your problem is that "foreign aid" to Israel and other nations is a matter of policy, a way, the military-industrial complex in the States maintains it stranglehold on the legislators and the executive branches of the your government. Heck, most of the EU countries produce their own stuff "at home", and their economies are sustainable. Israel's economy would be more sustainable if it did the same.
...to the claims that only jews are "chosen" people by God.
heritage but Tomb of Abraham Sara,Jacob,Isac Leah and Rebecca is not an Israeli one ? That's what could be expected from Bambi ,one of the few in the Western World not carrying first name deriving from the Old Testament.
If we kept the money and spent it here on infrastructure, ALL the money would be spent in the US, ALL the jobs would be here and we would wind up with a better country. Sounds like a better deal to me.
The Arabs have Heritage Sights in Israel (some under their own supervision - not Israeli Gov.s), The Vatican and most other Christian denominations have theirs in Israel, including huge tracts of land around the Gallilee and Jerusalem, which they supervise/decide upon. A Heritage site does not mean a change of any agreement over running the sites, merely giving it a higher importance and respect to a nation or culture.
I wouldn't bring my bicycle to you for servicing! If your facts on the mideast reflect on mechanic skills, woe to the uninformed. Your system overheats too much from a lot of hot, anti-Israeli parts. You need a major overhaul, bud, and need to refer to the original Manual- not some cheap, unprofessional quick fixing guides.
The usa supports Israel due to many common interests. It is a symbiotic relationship. Speaking of butt ins and outs, Israelis have also sacrificed lives by accomodating the usa many times in peace and warfare. Some of the armtwisting has certainly created conditions that have led to unecessary deaths and other casualties. It seems you do not understand the mechanics of the process over here and the significance of the two sites added onto the list of 'sacred' sites. If we don't protect them, we know what the Islamists have done in the past and what they will do in the future. If your brain is set in stone and not able to comprehend this issue alone, you need to update your software from prehistoric to something more current. Regards to Wilma, Fred.
The US shows its ignorance. Just go to North Cyprus and see how the Moslem Turks desecrated Christian sites. By designating Jewish sites hopefully means the same will not happen in the future in the West Bank.
The sites pre-date Islam by around 1500 years. All Muhammad needed to claim ownerships is have the Angel Gabriel as a consultant and suddenly history is changed, ownership change and Jews denied access (as was the case pre establishment of the state of Israel). I think I will get the Angel Gabriel to speak to me tonight and advise that the North American Indians Spirits left me all the ancient hunting grounds. A few cities will need to be re-located but then denial of my revelation is denial of my Religious beliefs and rights. To claim otherwise is Blasphemy. The truth is the first victim of Islam - 1. colonialism by the west - sorry ?? What was Islam doing for 1000 years in India, what was it doing in Eastern Europe, Spain, etc. 2. Slave trade by USA - I beg your pardon - still happening widely in Islamic countries - not USA, Abolished in Mauritania (still practiced) in 1981 around 132 years after USA, etc, etc - Also death toll from Arabs Slave traders more then 5X USA bound, et
If you didn't know already, Mr. Fred, when Barak signed on the dotted line a while ago, he agreed that the Israel Defense Forces uniforms be produced in North Carolina. The planes, of course were produced in the States, but for some reason there is a trade-off where the Drones are manufactured in Israel. Then too, there is a agreement to pass on the technological developments of the Israel Aircraft Industries on to . . . That is R & D that comes more cheaply than what it would cost in the States. Granted, Turkey, a NATO partner takes its planes to IAI for refurbishing cuz' it's cheaper. Nonetheless, the bottom line is that foreign aid usually means work for people in the United States of America, in some industries where the work usually gets out-sourced. So . . . whether you like the nation in question, or have problems with it, the States comes out like jobs and money for Americans.
I think Clinton is correct . We are playing with ourselves and with the whole world this game of deception of ourselves and other people. We must look in the morror and say to ourselves the time has become to stop deluding ourselves. Peres had a euphoric dream of a New Middle East. However , his dream didn't coincide with Arafat's dream and other's who saw Israel's halplesness and weakness - and jumped on the bandwagon as a partner to Peres-Rabin's folly. We must realize that there is no chance to succeed with this peace plans whatever they will be. It's either we give up Israel or we retake it. Once we understand that and decide to be realistic and pragmatic - can we decide what path to take. However , for this we need to be really truthful and gather the whole nation to work together and decisively, and who feels differently , must either capitulate and join the Jewish Nation - or emigrate to US or who loves Hamas should join them and leave us to find the true path. We need leaders
The Cave of the Patriarchs is about Jewish heritage...and this specific heritage includes notions aquiring the Land as an inheritance and of Ancient Israelite settlement. So it is not so simple..Jewish (based on Ancient Israelite) and Land of Israel go together The Biblical accounts tell us that Isaac and Ishmael came together to bury their father ..showing respect to the common father and his heritage. The State of Israel (and the Palestinians) have a lesson to learn from Isaac and Ishmael. The Holy sites should not be used a weapons in the struggle over "who is the boss". If we show sensitivity and understanding here it could be an opening for a brighter future.
Since when are these sites Israeli? They are clearly Jewish and associated with Judaism. They are not for Israel, America, or anyone else to give up or take!!!! Would those who espouse peace give their places of worship to anyone who just said,"It is mine." Heck no! Why must Israel and the Jewish people always have to give up, give in and get less than what others expect of themselves or give? Enough is enough...This is about Judaism defining itself and its holy sites? God forbid we asked the Vatican to relocate or Mecca and Medina! Shame on the World for its double standard in regard to this issue!
The US and other hypocrits slamming Israel over this issue never asked anyone about their own choice for historically relevant sites. Why must Israel? Simply because Palestinian Statehood demands it...Ok- That is about as logical as Israel wanting Damascus and Baghdad since Jews lived there once and had thriving communities...This is about our Faith, History and Peoplehood! We remember what happened when Muslim's trashed Rachel's tomb and other Jewish sites in there quest for recognition. When the Muslims give up Mecca and Medina then they can have Rachel's tomb and those of OUR Matriarchs and Patriarchs!
Now just clear up this misunderstanding Noam Shalit seems to have that the Israeli PMO listens to Obama and that Obama opposes Palestinian reconciliation. Netanyahu makes his living telling Obama to buzz off. The idea that on an important issue like POW negotiations, Netanyahu takes private counsel from somebody in the current administration is laughable.
It's just that simple.
ANY of it back! Can Bibi and Likud be stopped without a harsh rebuke with TEETH? Probably not even then.......PEACE NEVER?
that site rightfully belongs to the Israel people. Infact all of it belongs to them. that is their heritage
Sorry dude but to many americans have died indirectly for supporting Israel for us to "Butt Out". Your spoiled mindset thinks your entitled for us to support your foolish behavior. For foury plus years my taxes have gone to Israel and my country has paid for the right to " not butt out".
right wing nuts are running israel there is no chance for peace, america can do very little as long as jewish lobby dictates it's policy regarding middle east. even israeli left is deperately weak has no voice and israel is moving too much to the right too fast.
obama rules
By all differences between us and them, Hebron should be a place to pronounce the common heritage. Well, in the most far sense common, of course. Or are there too many things in common between us and them that makes it impossible to accept him as the other and make peace with him?
Who needs this useless president issuing more useless edicts? Just go away, you big Zero, O bama.
