U.S. official: Hezbollah arms flow may signal plans for war with Israel
State Dept. official tells Al-Hayat that flow of arms into south Lebanon clearly breaches UN Resolution 1701.
By Avi Issacharoff Tags: Lebanon Israel newsThe U.S. is concerned that the continued flow of arms to the Hezbollah militant organization could prompt a war between Israel and Lebanon, State Department official Jeff Feltman said in remarks published Sunday by the London-based Al-Hayat daily.
Feltman, who serves as Assistant Secretary of U.S. State Department's Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, told the daily that the U.S. had no evidence of any Israeli plan to attack its northern neighbor.
Nevertheless, Feltman said he was growing increasingly worried by reports describing the quantity and types of weapons being smuggled to the terrorist organization in clear violation of United Nations Resolution 1701, which put an end to the 2006 war.
The UN resolution clearly demanded a weapons-free south Lebanon, said Feltman, but the world had yet to see that put into play.
With regard to the possibility of a future peace deal between Lebanon and Israel, Feltman said that he believed Lebanon preferred to see a Palestinian-Israeli agreement reached first.
When asked about negotiations between Syria and Israel, Feltman said U.S. special Mideast envoy George Mitchell had passed on to Jerusalem a message from Damascus on the matter, but that progress was slow.
Feltman also said that the U.S. wanted to see the Palestinian Authority resume negotiations with Israel in order to resolve the issue of West Bank settlements. Once borders were determined, said Feltman, the issue of settlements would be easier to solve.

yeah.. Israel wanst to fight all arabs in arabia...are you nuts? Yes..if forced to fight they will use evry strenght to defend themselves. John boy...get this straight the Arabs dont want Peace! Little david Israel will smack down Goliath Arabs,,and the giant will go down!
If I remember right the United Nations declared that Israel and withdrawn 100% from all Lebanese territory. Now maybe they were wrong but I think you should check your facts before you speaking your emotions
When it comes time Israel will roll over Hizbollah. The UN will be very angry with Israel, because the UN is a mouth for piece Muslim propaganda. The UN will never learn to like Israel or the Jews, only shun them and tell them they did wrong when the defended themselves from 1.6+ billion people who want them dead.
which resolutions has israel violated #3? Israel was only in Lebanon to protect its Northen citizens from attack. Israel if it wanted could occupy all of Lebanon. Come on, knock it off already.
israel's policies towards the palestinians is THE issue of contention behind MOST regional animosity towards israel. as long as israel maintains its occupation and its settlement building, it will NEVER realize peace and normalized relations with its neighbors. this is why the saudi peace plan insists on the things it does; because all of them are critical matters of contention that if left unresolved, will continue to foster the animosity in the region's populations that precludes any possibility of a wider acceptance of israel as a friend and neighbor. israel can make all excuses it wants, and it can blame everyone it wants, but only IT holds the key to its long term peace, security and prosperity.
"Feltman also said that the U.S. wanted to see the Palestinian Authority resume negotiations with Israel in order to resolve the issue of West Bank settlements. Once borders were determined, said Feltman, the issue of settlements would be easier to solve. " Except..... that allows Israel to be intrasigent BECAUSE the status of ALL the settlements are "undecided" i.e. Israel will adopt the maximalist position that a border must includes ALL of those settlements inside "Israel". Bibi will be able to claim (correctly) that any OTHER border "pre-judges" the status of *this* or *that* settlement, and that everyone had agreed that the status of all settlements will be left till last. The USA has this all wrong, and the Pals have this exactly right i.e. the American proposal ensures Israel will scupper any negotiations that do take place.
America has been giving Israel billions of dollars in free weapons every year. This in spite of the fact that Israel itself is a major weapons dealer. As for Hizbollah, they were created in response to the Isralei invasion and long occupation of Lebanon. Hizbollah ran the IDF out of Lebanon in 2006. Although hostilities have occurred sporadically over the years, I don't think that Hizbollah has ever made a peace agreement with Israel. There has always been a state of war. This Feltman character should get a clue before he opens his mouth.
Is this guy a Zionist? Maybe thats part of our problem. We need non-biased people involved with Middle East decisions. Not these people who are looking out for Israeli interests over and above American interests. We also need to have people who will take into consideration the Arabs as well, after all Arabs are also part of this country and should also be represented fairly. Sorry but Ive seen enough"American" talkbackers here that say "we" when they refer to issues in Israel. I question the loyalties of a right wing Zionist and the decisions they may make when it comes to Israel benefiting. Meanwhile Israel just kidnapped a Lebanese sheepherder, so who is looking to start trouble with who?
"Feltman, who serves as Assistant Secretary of U.S. State Department's Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, told the daily that the U.S. had no evidence of any Israeli plan to attack its northern neighbor. " - Haaretz He could read the Israeli press and learn there are many advocating a war with someone, anyone. . .
Bibi's government is such a bunch of chancers, misfits, extremists and ideologues, that it's hard to know which is less appealing - them, or Hezbollah. I don't think the world will really start caring about Hezbollah weapons until Israel starts caring about peace and replaces this dodgy government with something more accaptable.
Feltman, who serves as Assistant Secretary of U.S. State Department's Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs. The name "Feltman" says it all. Can an man of jewish faith honestly give an unbiased opinion on any mideast affair? Why is it always officals of jewish faith or congress that lead the march of gloom and doom against any arab nation? Can we get an unbiased opinion really?? Seems to me the arabs were right about being biased.
No Kidding Feltman. Did you really think Hizballah would sit and wait naked for another attack without trying to rearm themselves. Grow up. Israel daily brakes 1701 and still occupies parts of south Lebanon, no comments on that? oh right forgot, here in the US we don't dare blame israel. Curious isn't it we're not worreid about a hizballah attack on Israel but we blame them for everything...you people make me sick.
I, personally, don't like Hezollah, but they had a right to oppose Israel when Israel was an occupier in Lebanon. Technically, there are tiny bits of Lebanon still under Israeli control, and I hope this gets resolved so there are no excuses for conflict. Anyway, even if Hezbollah is getting more arms, I hope no conflict erupts. The US gets concerned about Hezbollah violating 1701 because they are Arabs and Muslims violating a resolution. Israel violates resolutions and the US doesn't cite resolution numbers. The US is a corrupt sheriff and Israel is its cousin that breaks the law and just gets a little scolding here and there. When is the sheriff going to wake up and make the cousin follow the law?
lebanese govt is controlled now by hezbullah. Us is doing same on west bank in training fatah "security" force who will end up killing jews. US wanrts to reconstruct gaza so they can concentrate on arms rather than running a country who also can end up killing jews. Is there a trend to the obama govt? It appears that the US solution is to arm and train israels enemies.
the State Department would assign an American of Arab origin to head the ME section of the State Department. It is obvious what and who Feltman stands for.......
That way they can pound the Arabs and establish regional hegemony. It will never happen
The resolution is obsolete.
Every rocket lobbied into israel, being from the hamas or the hizballah, every stone thrown against an Israeli, comes from iran, one way or another, for the last 8 years...finaly somebody is awakening and rubbing his eyes...even this garbage "report" from the galstone traitor,is also a pebble thrown by iran against Israel
coalition preparing for anothe visit by the IDF. Seeing as all the UN resolution on Lebanon talk more about respecting the wishes of the Lebanese government than anything else, and Hezbollah not only is part of that government, but got the majority of the votes (even the Christian ones), arguing that this action violates the UN resolution seems a bit of a stretch.
he really wants the best for the lebanese and it shows.
