U.S. House seeks tighter U.S.-Israeli ballistic missile defenses

Measure to redirect $205 million toward projects already underway in Israel against Iranian threat.

By Reuters

The United States House of Representatives has adopted a measure aimed at weaving closer U.S. and Israeli defenses against ballistic missiles of the type that could be fired by Iran.

Part of a $504 billion defense spending bill passed Thursday, the measure would redirect $205 million in Defense Department funds toward projects already underway in Israel.

It would provide $25 million more for Arrow missile co-production and integration, $45 million for a U.S.-Israeli short-range missile defense system dubbed "David's Sling" and $135 million to buy a Theater High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, fire unit.

All three projects involve interceptors designed to shoot down ballistic missiles in the terminal phase of their flight paths.

The move was spearheaded by Rep. Duncan Hunter of California, the senior Republican on the House Armed Services Committee and a candidate for his party's 2008 presidential nomination.

It was a last-minute addition to the Democratic-controlled House's version of the fiscal 2008 defense authorization bill, which still awaits action in the Senate and reconciliation of any differences between the bills.

Overall, the House included about $8.2 billion for the Pentagon's Missile Defense Agency, a net reduction of $764 million from the sum sought by President Bush.

The House authorized all $1.4 billion requested by the administration for the Patriot Advanced Capabilty-3 (PAC-3) and Medium Extended Air Defense System.

The Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance, a booster group funded partly by companies involved in building missile shields, applauded the initiative to further integrate U.S. and Israeli missile defenses.

"The more missile defense systems deployed the safer and more stable it is for the United States, our allies and our friends," said Riki Ellison, the group's president.

    Missile defense is unworkable

One of the amazing features of the US ballistic missile defense (BMD) program is how so many politicians talk as if it worked. Missile defense is unworkable, now as 50 years ago, but there is money to be made. That looks like a new boon to Israel's armaments industry. But today's BMD is no defense for anybody. Some Israelis have personal awareness of the quality of "terminal defense" from the 1991 Persian Gulf war. It didn't work then and it won't work now. Today's so-called BMD system has not been tested under any realistic conditions and, in fact, cannot be tested. The existing hardware is essentially the same as in 1991 and control systems don' exist for a significant defense. Missile "defense" is a cruel deception foisted on a badly informed public, a pointless expenditure of intellectual effort, and a vast, unending waste of money, for the US, for Israel, or for any other country (Poland, Czechy) that gets sucked up into this nonsense.

be more specific and give examples. One would example would also be enough of an American dying for Israel. Don't give me general thoughts and impressions and your feelings and try to get away with it. We are too intelligent for you here. As far as you recalling a post by me "saying the Haaretz blog is "high level stuff" , I think you mistook me for someone in your imagination. The Haaretz posters, except for very few are imbeciles. You should take lots of pride associating with them, as I see you do. Incidentally, by the sea is much nicer than rattlesnake infested Henderson.

This is all well and good, but it will be much more efficient -- and ultimately necessary as well -- to disarm the theocratic Iranian regime completely, from the air. Missiles and nuclear weapons are only part of the problem that is this cretinous regime. Missile defenses are but bandages. You must remove the tumor itself.

You are the one who apparently is spending too much time "by the sea". What you are saying to Nick W is pure rubbish, and you know it and if you don't, you are the one in the need of an education. In fact, what you stated is a bald faced lie. Try keeping current with history and less time by the sea and perhaps you would come to the conclusion Nick has. BTW, I recall a post from you saying the Haaretz blog is "high level stuff"; and your post to Nick proves the "high level" of your high level. Personal insults galore and no substance. Regards. Ballistic.

You are either drunk, on drugs or naturally hallucinating. Never has an American soldier died for Israel. Israel never asked for any help in manpower from anyone. They can take care of themselves. If anything, the Bush war in Iraq has considerably endangered Israel and the entire world. You are a deranged fool. You are only allowed to post on this site after you complete first grade.

You may be a scientist, but you sure ain't an economist! If the US attacks Iran, be assured OPEC members will stop aceepting/holding US dollars for Oil and China could well follow, dumping about a trillion dollars. If/when oil is paid in Euros and the dollar sinks, the US economy is finished. So, for what reason do you want to bomb Iran? To see if the Saudis will bail us out?!! You Israeli firsters are a sick lot!

whatever olmert or peres has that makes them sleepy at work-surely we can duplicate it and use it against the missile launch workers while they are "on the job".put them to sleep take away their missiles and clothes and then depart the scene.if they keep waking up naked in public it might traumatise them enough to give up on bothering us.surely this would be cheaper and more effective than building antimissile missiles?

ng Israel not to destroy the Leb infrastructure. In the recent briefing in the White House, the S.Dep. Spokesman said " Israel has the right to defend itself but must take into account consequences.." Murderers of the 3 US diplomats shot in Gaza their way to deliver Fulbright Sholarships to deserving pal High School graduates are known, roaming free and paid by the funds provided by the US to "Abbas loyal forces". US S.Dept tries to force Israel into allowing "free passage" for the pals to the WB from Gaza thru Israel, skirting any form of border control.

Our boys in the US are dying to protect ISrael and will continue to do so until Americans can see through the fog put up by media owned and sympathetic to ISrael. Their actions will come to light, hopefully when this AIPAC trial begins US citizens will see what we've been supporting, a brutal and racist state.

The House decided to test our anti-missile systems in Israel seeing the opportunity to gain a live fire and realistic testing opportunity far away from the home shores. Great idea. These systems never work the first time at bat, so we need to fine tune them in realistic circumstances.

    • 06:22

We, the US, better do something in the next year about the Iranian nukes. I know Persian scientists. They are some of the best. They will bypass conventional fission nukes to go for the thermonukes, deuterium-tritium fussion -boosted. They have no reliable delivery vehicle but may modify C-130 Hercules or Boeing 727 for the weapon delivery. Israelis have no vehicles to destroy the facilities. We should get the B-2s fueled and ready. They would probably retaliate against Israel with some scuds, but nothing too serious. The oil boicott would be worse, the fuel could hit $7/gallon, but Saudis will increase the production. There is no other choice.
