U.S. Evangelists to boost Israel support in wake of Hamas win

MKs, Christian Allies Caucus meet in Jerusalem to discuss ways of dealing with Hamas.

By The Associated Press

The victory of Hamas in last week's Palestinian election will likely strengthen the relationship between Israel and evangelicals, Knesset members and Christian leaders said Monday.

A Hamas-led government could threaten access to holy sites and the well-being of Christians in the holy land, Israeli parliament members and evangelical leaders warned in a meeting sponsored by the Christian Allies Caucus, a group of 14 Knesset members seeking to mobilize Christian support for Israel.

Evangelical Christians are among the strongest supporters of Israel in the U.S., but some are uncomfortable with their extreme stance, opposing any Israeli pullback from the West Bank or Gaza or compromise with the Palestinians.

Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson caused a stir in Israel by implying that the massive stroke Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suffered on Jan. 4 was divine retribution for his pullout from Gaza last summer. Robertson later apologized.

Israel has said it would have no contact with a government led by Hamas, which rejects Israel's right to exist and has sent dozens of suicide bombers into Israel, killing hundreds.

At the meeting, Christian representatives said a Palestinian government led by Hamas will galvanize Christian support for Israel.

When Fatah was in power, it was more complicated for many evangelicals to understand they should side with Israel, because Fatah was a partner to interim peace accords, said David Decker, of the Covenant Alliance, an arm of the Christian Allies Caucus seeking to set up pro-Israel groups in parliaments around the world, including the U.S. Congress.

"Most of the civilized world understands that Hamas is bad," Decker said. "So this makes it very clear (Israel) is the one trying to make peace and (the Hamas-led Palestinians) are not."

It is no longer simply pleasant for Evangelicals and Israeli leaders to work together, said Rebecca Brimmer, president of Bridges for Peace, an Evangelical Christian organization that helps Jews immigrate to Israel.

"We must not forget we have joint enemies," Brimmer said.

Evangelicals and parliament members said it didn't matter than Hamas was elected democratically.

"It's openly a holy war against both our faiths," said MK Yuri Shtern. "And they (want to) keep the most important Christian holy places in their hands. This is a death threat to our civilization, to our religions."

However, Bishop Arif Shirvanian of the Armenian Orthodox Patriarchate in Jerusalem, was more optimistic about Hamas.

"I am hopeful with a lot of pressure from the international community and moderate Arab countries, Hamas will moderate its promises and ... they will come to think of achieving peace with Israel," Shirvanian said.

Will A "Two State Solution" Really Work???

There's a Hebrew word which is found in the T'NaKH (aka O.T)... it's in the book of the Prophet OvadYah (Obadiah). It's quite amazing in light of recent events. It specifically refers to an endtime judgment which will come upon Jacob's brother- the house of Esau- for the following reason: "How are [the things] of Esau searched out! [how] are his hidden things sought up!... For [thy] violence (khamas) against thy brother Jacob, shame shall cover thee and thou shalt be cut off for ever." (Obadiah 1:6;10) This word, "khamas", is found in the bible concordance textbook known as the 'Strong's Bible Corcordance'. It's listed there as #2555 and is translated in the Bible a total of sixty times as follows: - violence 39, violent 7, cruelty 4, wrong 3, false 2, cruel 1, damage 1, injustice 1, oppressor + [iysh/man] 1, unrighteous 1 Does the word, "KHAMAS", sound familiar in light of recent Palestinian election results?

I condemn Palestinian groups who sponsor suicide bombers. They simply should not target civilians. It was wrong in the beginning; it's wrong now and it will always be a despicable course of action. However I will not give Israelis citizens or their government the high moral ground they claim. The state of Israel is equally a sponsor of terror against Palestinian civilians It's carried out by a massively powerful military force which Israelis call "The Israeli Defence Force". The world should by all means demand of Hamas that they disarm and recognize the state of Israel. At the same time the world should demand that Israel recognize the state of Palestine, place the aparthied wall where it should be, remove civilian colonies from Palestinian land, prosecute military personnel who shoot to kill children, and live in peace. Make Israel accountable. Make Palestine accountable. The alternatives are racism.

With all due respect to #14, I suspect he's an exponent for the left-wing factions found in "churches" which interpret the Holy Scriptures through a prism of political correctness. So, too, with his assessment regarding Evangelicals supporting Israel. More than Don's one-dimensional caricature of the Evangelicals as essentially dangerous religious fanatics, the support which Evangelicals give to Israel is reflective of a truly wonderful phenomenon... A spiritual movement known as "Christian Zionism" or the "Hebraic Roots" movement. And though Evangelicals are prominent among their ranks, it takes in Christians of all stripes. I've personally witnessed its growth in the last 30 years. A common expression among its adherents is "I don't know why, but I love Israel and the Jewish people... I want to support them". This is not a man-made political/religious movement! It's the sovereign hand of God... a sign regarding prophecies uttered by the ancient prophets of Truth... read #45.

So, too, with his assessment of the phenomena surrounding Evangelical support for Israel. I've personally witnessed the growing phenomenon of the Christian Zionism movement for nigh unto 30 years, and though Evangelicals are predominant, nevertheless, it is truly a spiritual phenomenon that takes in Christians of all stripes. Two things must be concidered.. 1)by G-d's law all things sold into slavery or given up for peace is returned to the rightful owner, the kinsman Redeemer-Yeshua who paid the brideprice- on Jubilee. 2)Ezekiel's dry bones are already assembled and fleshed out...all that's left is G-d breath! re#14 Don Evangelicals who are pre-trib and millenialist understand the scriptures (Daniel and Revelation)to say just the opposite. We believe the prerequisite for Messiah's return is Israel's national return to G-d, which sadly comes only after much distress-the 70th week-birthpangs of the Messiah if you will. Then she(his first love)will turn her bridegroom Yeshua. He then fulfills the last three of the 7 Feasts, the appointed times of G-d. Anyone outside the covering of the blood on the doorposts, was to lose the life of their first born. In the same way, our Messiah gave his life (Psalm 22 "they pierced my hands and my feet") Now Y'shua's blood keeps all who call on him safe from the death angel. It is his sacrifice alone we all should put our hope in. Sha'aloo Shalom Y'rushalaim.

Hamas must disarm because small arms are no match for battle tanks and hell fire missiles. The Israelis are killers and they will use their supremacy of armament on any excuse to sate their bloodlust. Hamas must now posture itself as peace loving victims of Israeli aggression. Let Fatah morph into Hamas. Hamas must recognize the defacto existence of the Zionist state. Such recognition is merely a pragmatic recognition of Israels physical existence. It must not mean acceptance of the existence of the Zionist entity and in no way legitimizes that existence. The Zionist entity exists by force of arms on Palestinian land and has no basis in legitimacy.

I quote one of the previous respondents as having said, "it would be ridiculous to suggest that Jews and Evangelical Christians are natural allies...". In the "natural", that statement is somewhat correct. However, in the realm of the supernatural that prohpesied "alliance" is exactly what's beginning to take shape before our very eyes! Men judge affairs on the basis of their limited understanding which in itself is clouded by prejudices. However, there was one far wiser than we who long ago made the following declaration and thus it was written: "For there shall be a day, that the watchmen [the notzrim/christians] shall call upon the mount Ephraim [i.e., the stronghold of Eprayim]: 'Arise ye, and let us go up to Zion, unto the LORD our God.' For thus saith the LORD: Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout at the head of the nations [USA?]; announce ye, praise ye, and say: 'O LORD, save Thy people, the remnant of Israel.' (Yermeyahu/Jeremiah 31:6-7).

With all due respect. IF a Gentile converted to Judaism (this is the closest analogy that I can think of) and then ate pork, would they be considered a Jew? I think not. It is the same as calling someone a Christian. Christians 1)love Israel, 2)love the Jewish people, 3) support the country financially if possible, and 4) stand with the Nation of Israel. Many of the "Righteous Gentiles" during the Holocaust were in fact, Christians. THOSE were the Christians. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was what one would call an "Evangelical" Christian if he lived in our day, and was killed by the Nazis for being one. Please 'hear' me. If nothing else, the Jewish people MUST begin to read ALL of their scriptures and apply the standards found there to those who would call themselves Christian. I love the Jews because I love Jesus, a Jew. He said 'whatever you do to the least of my brethern, that you do to me'. I stood with Gush Katif. I support Israel's right to exist in peace and I'm black. Wake up.

Beyond that, there is a recognition of the role of Israel in God's plan for humanity -- and that is something we can all share, whether you are waiting for Messiah to come ... or to come again.

There is little difference between your type of Christian teaching and that of fanatical Muslims. Both of you believe that God abandoned the Jews when Christ was crucified by the Romans. For this you expelled us once from England and from Spain. You even taught that it was okay to persecute and kill us. Well we have returned and proven the Bible prophecies about us to have been true. That means the salvation which you proclaim to have had under Christ Jesus has been an illusion for all the Jew hating Christians and Muslims of the world for the past 2000 years. If you continue your war against the Apple of God's Eye, Jesus upon his return will vomit you out of his mouth, I promise you. Your deliverance is of the Jews and don't forget it Fr Paul!

We offer support based on shared values that similar to free, non-terrorist supporting societies. Now as far as compassionate aid, Evangelical Churches gives funds and assistance to everyone, regardless of race and religion. This includes Palestinians. An Evangelical Palestinian visited my church about 3 years ago, and he's got a great ministry where he offers up a day camp with alternative values opposed to Hamas garbage values. The term "Evangelical Christians" refers to Christians who believe that their salvation depends on a personal acceptance of Jesus as Savior. The term includes many mainstream Protestants. As used in connection with Israel, the term usually refers to a subset of Evangelical Christians known generally as millenialists, who subscribe to a belief that all of the "promised land" must be controlled by the Jews in order to usher in the final days and the second coming of Christ, at which time those Jews who refuse to acknowledge Christ will be consigned to damnation. This belief, based mainly on the books of Daniel and Revelation (Apocalypse) goes back no further than the sixteenth century, and was mostly developed in nineteenth century Britain. The millenialists care nothing for Palestinian Christians, since there is no place for them in their peculiar belief system. Nor do they necessarily care very much about Jews, other than as the instrumentality that ushers in the final days. There are roughly 20 million Protestants and Orthodox Christians whose churches are members of Christians for Middle East Peace, a group which advocates a two state solution and a just division of the holy land. This is also the position of the Roman Catholic Church. The Milleniialists support the most extreme right wing Israelis. They advocate a position that the majority of Israelis realize can only lead to more bloodshed.

That's a rather odd idea of yours that a person is more of Christian than his neighbour because he has been a Christian for longer. In any event, the peoples of Europe have been Catholic for many centuries. That did not prevent them from collaborating en masse with the Nazis to murder 1.5 million Jewish children.

As we don't believe what they believe, and many of us don't believe that Christ even existed, why should we care? They could believe that all Jews on death are automatically converted to Christianity as far as I'm concerned. That they support Israel so vigorously is the important issue.

That cartoon only goes to prove, yet again, how unsafe Europe is for Jews and how essential Israel is for our continued survival. I firmly believe that long after Israel has made peace with the Arabs, the gentiles of Europe will still be our eternal enemy.

How long have these Evangelical Christians been around

Ask an evangelical Christian how long their family has been Christian and they will probably tell you: "Since pastor so-and-so preached in our town several years ago." Ask a Palestinian Christian the same question and they will tell you: "My family has been Christian since Jesus came to our village." How convenient it is sometimes to try and re-write history.

They do support pro-Israel Arab Christians

Evangelical Christians do support Arab Christians who are not anti-Israel. Those Arab "Christians" who prefer the PA (or worse), who are anti-Semitic, and who sometimes tacitly support the terror tactics of the assorted Muslim groups against the Jews receive little or no support or acknowledgment from Western evangelical Christians. Not too surprising.

It's true...why don't they support their Christian breatheren? or do they? Also, do these people realize that the vast majority of all christians in Israel and Palestine are Palestinians? This is a strange variable into an already complicated situation in the middle east..and how can Israelis support evangelicals who believe that you have to either accept Jesus or you go to hell...the Catholics at least have abandoned this train of thought...evangelicals mission IS to convert everyone...yes, what trully strange bedfellows Israel has now...

Funny, I've never read or seen an article about these "evangelicals" offering any kind of support to christians in Israel or the Palestinian territories.
